I love what Matthew Bolyard said regarding other preserved locomotives. It's a common thing amongst railfans to want more than what they can get, myself included. However, fans must learn that there are certain circumstances where restoration to operation just isn't feasible. I am a nut for NYC and its a dream that 3001 gets restored, but aside from her cosmetic, she's in very poor condition. I don't think that she'll be restored to operation because 1, she's so old, 2, she has a whole lot of mechanical issues and elemental damage, 3, her restoration like all will cost money some administrations do not have, and 4, her home would be undefinable. It's VERY easy to point your finger and say, "Well, we should restore NYC 3001 or Frisco 1522" but it sounds good on paper. Until you eventually learn of the financial costs, the location of trackage, the materials, and the history of said locomotive. It serves as a piece of mind to not be influenced by dreams all the time. However, I am super excited that 2 Reading T1s are a step further in their third careers. I am grateful to the workers and volunteers of the American Steam Railroad for making one certain dream come true. Rise, 2100. Edit: As of April 7th, 2022, Reading T1 #2102, 2100’s sister locomotive, has been restored to operation condition and made her first run in over 20 years. The day before my birthday too. Welcome back, 2102. Your sister will be joining you.

Yup! Like me, for example. I'd love to see all seven of the UP "Big Boy" steam locos get restored to operating conditions...not just cosmetically restored. But, I know that's both impossible and unrealistic. I just think its sad that #4014 is the only "Big Boy" running. 😔

I've been following the process of 2100's rebuild since fall 2018 and despite this restoration has been going longer than I thought I haven't given up faith on the engine and hopefully if all goes we'll with it's current process it might be down within the next year. But only time will tell for that one.

I rode behind former Reading T-1 2101 way back in the summer of 1977 as part of the "Chessie Steam Special." It was from the B&O's Barr Yard to Garrett, IN and back. Nice trip on a beautiful warm day. I believe the cost of the excursion was around $30.00. Two run-bys were performed at about the halfway point. Nice video on sister engine 2100 and best of luck with the restoration!

Wonderful! I'm shocked though, that anyone knows all of the techniques and even functions of everything on that machine this many years later.... looks like general metallurgy and riveting techniques and tools have survived, but what about the 100 valves and controls in the cab? How could anyone possibly know what each did, and more importantly WHY and HOW to adjust each? I suspect many were just due to the evolution of understanding up until the 1950s.... something which was empirically known, but not really on a blueprint or easily reverse-engineered. I can't believe there is someone on the project who has figured out the purpose and need for each last knob and lever in the cab, and how to drive one of these with as much experience and smarts as the conductor in the 1940s and 1950s. Comments?

These guys need to contact Ross Rowland if they haven't already. Ross still has her booster engine at his house last we spoke and he would be glad to reunite it with the locomotive. It just needs to be picked up. If you can let them know. You obviously have interaction with this organization so let them know.
@PennsyPro
@PennsyPro 2 жыл бұрын
We’re aware of where the booster engine is located, but it will not be installed on the locomotive initially. The 2100 sans-booster develops a hefty 68,000 pounds of tractive effort, which will be plenty for our planned operations. Additionally, the condition and completeness of the booster is in question, as it was disassembled and intended for use on another locomotive. We’ve been in contact with Ross and had an event centered around his career a few years back. He is a major backer of the project.
@steamgent4592
@steamgent4592 2 жыл бұрын
@@PennsyPro yes I knew he was a supporter. I used to live nearby him and would run into him on occasion. Yes it was used in 614 for a time and then swapped back out. But Ross isn't getting any younger so retrieving it before something happens so it's at least with the locomotive would be a good idea and a priority. Even 2102s is booster just goes along for the ride giving weight to the back truck. Reading intentionally messed up the equalization on the T1s to cut crew pay it's why the T1s start to surfboard over 55mph. That extra weight sits on the trailing truck & increases the faster you go. By taking weight off the drivers it reduced their original tractive effort and didn't create a new pay bracket for engine crews. They were paid so many cents per the weight on the drivers per trip. Unless you were on a hourly job with them in the 50s in pusher service or the Rambles which as they were passenger would have been a hrly run anyway.

@Krystal Alpha McCloud It's much too early to make any firm announcements. ASR and the R&N already have a strong relationship, and have traded parts and expertise in the past. If the opportunity arises, we'd love to head east and hook up with our sister!
@johnrich2102
@johnrich2102 2 жыл бұрын
Bear in mind, if not for the booster these locomotives would have likely been 4-8-2's, because the Reading K-1 2-10-2's had equal-sized if not larger fireboxes and only needed a 2-wheel trailing truck.

Well actually, The American Steam railroad isn't the one restoring 4070, it's the Midwest Railway Preservation Society. They're two separate entities who share a roundhouse in Cleveland Ohio. I'm not sure though if 1352 will be operable first or 4070. It could be either both.
@HaddaClu
@HaddaClu 2 жыл бұрын
@@regularguy7266 4070 will come first for sure. Especially if the photos of 1352 overgrown are to go by - some of them recent. Lets face it ASR has more or less sunk all their cash into 2100 and will most likely never "find the time" to move 1352 like they promised backed when 2100 was brought to Cleveland. Everything they have said since bringing 2100 has been typical - it doesnt need much we just need to run a few excursions first to earn revenue. That was a favorite line - often touted when saying that 2100 didnt need a 1472 before 2021 and they would be running trips to earn the cash for further work on 2100 and moving 1352. Well they did need more work and a 1472 and should have just started on one fresh once they had first gotten the loco. Then there was the time Midwest attempted to evict ASR from the roundhouse - it got nasty on both RYPN and TrainOrders forums. So I'll take anything ASR says with a large pinch of salt.

@@bakerboat4572 Considering Midwest owns the roundhouse they were well within their right at the time to slap eviction papers on the locomotive and equipment. Whatever was settled to keep 2100 there happened in private. I was just making a point that ASR rarely is one to fully trust. Especially since Rob Gardner can get quite nasty on the forum boards when confronted.
