I agree with you, Gabby. The more thrillers I read, the less I find surprising or actually "thrilling". I've become a tough rater when it comes to thrillers. It really has to shock me to give it 4 or 5 stars!

I'm sorry you didn't have a fun time, but hopefully some recommended books will give you the 5🌟 you deserve! My favorite mystery/thriller? Murder Your Employer by Rupert Holmes! The book itself is GORGEOUS, and the dark academia vibes are fantastic. It's going to be a series too.

I totally agree with your thriller comments! I feel like I haven’t rated one high in awhile. I always thought that maybe I had read too many! It’s hard to find a great twist anymore! I now try to break them up by reading other genres in between.

ohhh you read my mind! I am reading Everyone here is lying. When I read the first chapter that introduced Avery, I at first thought she was a teenager or something like that because of her way of talking to her father, but then I reread the previous sentences and I was shocked to know that she was actually 9 years old! So unbelievable!

Hey Gabby Reads and co conspirators. 😅 Im sorry you didnt enjoy these books as much as anticipated . I definitely think you can get genre creep or fatigue. I am a fantasy/SF reader but nothing gripped the last year so I tried Truly Devious mystery series and enjoyed it jumped into thrillers. Sometimes when we're in the genre too long looking for something to move us like it did back at beginning. We need a palate cleanse bc it doesn't matter if book is 2 or 5 our bookish stomach is full and it all taste the same. I can't imagine as booktuber that happens even quicker more when you see so many repeat themes. Taking a break or jumping to a book or short story or dreaded non-fiction outside of true crime. Can help get out of that slump. I am fairly new to thrillers so i enjoyed Everyone Here is Lying but also maybe because it gave shades of The Bad Seed book and film and The Good Son a 90s classic with Elijah Wood and Macaulay Culkin. I kind wish Avery was more unhinged. She was selfish and rude but not scary as Culkin was . I dont know maybe you aren't suppoded to like in quotes” problem children" but i didnt like the accusingly the autistic child , and constantly being told Nora was beautiful I just finished Everyone Here is Lying I started thriller after being bored with sci Fi/fantasy genre. I found this book interesting in that it was giving me shades of The bad seed movie and book. I think the pov I was most interested were unhinged Avery 9 yo. I wonder if the author was trying to give commentary on domestic abuse and tried to get away from trop of gone girl is prob kidnapped by Chester the molester. I feel like it was bit odd that they kept referring to Nora as beautiful as a way to excuse her adultery and then constantly say that she felt covered in sin despite being non religious. I don't have children but if you read pretty little liars Avery sounds like a malevolent 14/15 year old that even when I watched and read Pretty Little Liars the things occurring in plot were unhinged for the age but Sara Shepard was pretty good with giving entree into fashion details and kinda rep ADHD fever dream that goes on in over the universal experience of young people who are overachiever / perfectionist. Although its universal i think it can be worse in wealthy spaces and exacerbated in emprovished areas because the benefit for a poor teen who can get a scholarship can be life changing I didn't feel bad that Monica Cook was murdere /died. I thought it was interesting (disappointingly accurate that the mother was willing to separate from the father because of his cheating but not because the father ,an adult physician dealt with his "challenging" sociopath daughter by hitting her hard more than once and was only sorry and embarrassed that the daughter spoke it out loud. This storyline also parallel to that show Cruel Summer except in that story the kidnapping happened with inappropriate male teacher but the show focused on the teen girl who went voluntarily into the guys home and wasn't always locked in a basement. And the girl who discovered that her classmate was in the house upstairs and ate dinner wit the teacher .being accused of knowingly not reporting where theb kidnap victim was. The show is interesting bc it makes both scenarios believable. The show is pretty good but if the girl was 9. It wouldn't work.

It makes sense that the more thrillers you read (and remember the plots of) the harder it is for authors to impress you. You probably would have rated some of these books higher if it was your first time reading thrillers. Luckily for me, I forget the plots of thrillers quickly after reading them so I can keep reading more without being bored more so than other experienced readers.

Oh for sure it's harder to be surprised and the longer I read a genre! I find this with movies too, I'm sooooo picky now and I used to be easily entertained. If you like memory stuff you have to check out ADRIFT by Brideau - it's a speculative suspensey mystery novel rather than a thriller - it has amnesia, but an interesting take on amnesia that I haven't seen before. (Apologies if I've already suggested this book, I'm a bit obsessed 😂)

I feel exactly the same with thrillers. So when I read a good one, I just cherish it so much. I recommend the new, Gillian McMillan, Just Another Missing Person. I thought that was really well thought out and written. Also, the audiobook is as really well performed by the two narrators.

A lot of 3s bc they will be fun but nothing I’ll remember later on. Kind of sucks bc it’s just super hard finding that gold book now adays

I think the more of any genre you read you kind of just start to see into the Matrix lol, What I mean is that you start to see the formula, tropes, etc. so it kinda looses its charm, if that makes sense?

pls pls read the harry quebert affair... you will love it. also, i think after we read a lot of these fast paced thrillers, it grows on us and there are no more new ideas to get your mind blown. I have discovered lengthy character based thrillers now which i love. For example, the Dublin murder squad, the girl with the dragon tattoo and robert galbraith as such. try them and you will like it.

Another avid thriller reader here. I read almost entirely thrillers and I just seen it all. It's very rare at this point to give 3 stars, and let alone 4 or 5, and even the 5 are not enterily 5, but more like 4.4-5. I've read only one book by Shari Lapena - The couple next door, and when I reached to a certain point, I was like - oh, yes, that's what happened!

Glass onion is - as no doubt you're aware already - the title of Beatles song. I bring it up because it seems that peculiar metaphor (peeling away the layers of an onion) was more important forty years ago than it is today. Nabokov used it in his Lectures on Russian Literature, for example. To peel an onion is something that means less today, I'd say. Only very rarely do I peel, or even chop onions anymore. So, maybe it isn't too surprising that title didn't reach out and grab you.

I really love your vlogs. I’ve been having a hard time with thrillers lately also. I did read Everyone Here is Lying and enjoyed it for the most part. There is also a book I got on KU called Birds of Flight by Anni Taylor recently that was actually really good. I ended up giving it four stars. I know your not much into fantasy but is there any chance you might pick up Fourth Wing? I’m not much a fantasy reader myself but I freakin loved that book. I’ve been trying to branch out some. Sometimes it a hit but other times unfortunately it isn’t. Honestly getting kinda bored with thrillers and romance because they are just feeling like they are all the same.

It sounds like with 'Gone Tonight'.. that maybe Act 2 should have just been from the mom's POV so that the reader could get the full story without the daughter POV chapters breaking up the flow. And then Act 3 maybe either go back to alternating mother/daughter POV chapters.. or maybe just the daughter POV where she finds out the secret and how she resolves it.

I agree 100% with your assessment of Avery. I have an 8yr old and a 11yr old....she definitely did not read as a child between those ages. I have a 14yr old and I think Avery may even out-age my teenager. The book was really basic......I even found the writing to be very stop and start.....simple....I can't explain it. This was not for me...but I gave it 2.5 stars. I've also been terribly underwhelmed by the thrillers I've been reading for the last year! :(

I’ve read all of these! Gone Tonight was so disappointing, I thought so many plot points were so implausible and the writing was overly simplistic. The other two were average for me, I think I had too high of expectations for the Shari Lapena book because hers are mostly good for me. I loved the characters in you cam trust me, but there wasn’t really much of a twist. I just wished there were more scenes with the two friends, because their dynamic was my favorite part of the book
