This video is spot on! Reading the crowd sometimes doesn’t mean watching with your eyes. It’s about how the vibe feels at the moment you’re playing a certain song or genre. You know when you played the wrong song when the air goes out of the room or people go to the bar to get a refill lol.

I feel like as the clubs are reopening after a long time, we can throw crowd reading off the window since people are gonna dance whatever you’ll play

very nice discution! love the part when you speak about difference between playing in a bar and in a club.. here in Quebec there is absolutly no difference between those 2 categories of venues.. its all "bars/club" just different size and food/no food ..but the playlist is almost the same everywhere .. what gets me confused.. the tittle is "reading the crowd" and all I ear is "dancefloor strategies" or "music management" discutions and thats a very different thing. I have difficulties to find the level of conversation I can have about "reading the crowd" that goes thru observations other then "they dance" or "they respond the right way" cause in many situations, like in weddings.. if you dont understand deep reading you can play usual stuff but you can miss the fact that, without cues or special demand, they are huge fan of old 00s trance music and something like Yves Desruyter Feel Free can elevate the party to a next level.. or a balad as a suprise can go totaly wild..! I mean. special tricks happens when a deep read can make you realise that commun stuff is okay, but you are missing the special effect. thats the first part. 2nd part.. about crowd reading. is: when you tryed everything and nothing is working. absolutly nothing..... I have few djs friends that text me when everything goes bad. And I always ask few question about what they played, what failed, and few observations questions.. then I ask 3 songs (rules of 3) to understand whats goin on and what is the frequency/energy/taste/saturation/calling/mood/outsiders/etc.. (I call it the diapason) ..and those 3 songs works as a reset, and as a frequency response from the crowd to understand what tone to use for them. then you need to reboot everything, reach their tone, get their attention at their vibe, and rebuilt the momentum to a call-to-action (dancing, I call it "the cluctch.. is you go too hard it jams the engine and everything fails, if you are too late and smooth it will not work too.. there is a sweet spot with techniques) and the discution become interresting in a coporate situation where everything can happens on so many different genres, level of energy, musical mixology.. its a pandora box full of suprise that need go read tons of information that can tell you "what is their musical influence from?" and nail it. harder when they speak a different langage and different coutry.. but you need to figure out that source and duplicate it and deep reading can give you that ... 3rd part is ..understand when and how send them to the bathroom, makes the sales, and bring them back.. a super high level of energy or bagner can be damagable for the club on longterm run cause the DJ is taking too much attention and dont let them enjoy themself in a deferent level.. and emulate a "poor dj" for a time to get that done while people dont see any difference and knowing when and how is realy based on "dont look at your screen.. look at them. do it right. whats next. what you need to achive now?" ..those kind of question I would ear you speak about "what are your observations" into "crowd reading" and deep observations that can give you hints on "this is a very different path than usual, but this little thing show me that this weird move is the absolute right move to do now or in 30 mins after a long strategy for them" ..those king of talk! that was my little agreement 😅 was nice to ear you all! I like what you do!

Best dj tips is Crossdader; subscribed to podcast too. These tips are great but for me personally, I will play my style only 😱 Let me explain 😉 As an old man (49) & having been 25 years out of djing & only just getting back into it, I do not do it as a job per ce. I have kitted myself out with all the equipment so I'm ready to go but I am not bothered if I get a few bookings or not. I do it because I ABSOLUTELY love House music - especially Progressive House, Acid, Tech House & Techno. I have no interest whatsoever in pop music or doing weddings etc. I did that in my younger years and because this is not a career for me, I just want to play my style of House & that's it. I make it clear to any potential bar/pub on what my style is. From a personal POV, I think many folks nowadays like edgy House & cool Techno (with the odd mainstream anthem thrown in) and my gut instinct is that many bar goers are sometimes disappointed with the bog standard dj... but they still bop along because they have no choice... after all, they are on a night out. Too many mobile djs are bog standard, merely playing top 40. As I said, I think their crowds just tolerate it but I feel 'why not surprise this crowd' & be a trend setter with some bangin' tunes & tunes that one just can't help but move to?

It's always key to express yourself and put your stamp on the performance. Being able to capture the crowd with a genre you love can create some of the most magical sets that's for sure! Can sometimes just take time to ease the crowd into new music 🙌🏻
