WHO AM I?
I am a Harvard Graduate School of Education alumni '16 and a current PhD student in the Department of Education Studies at the University of California San Diego. I produce videos about the graduate school application and my journey through a PhD program. Subscribe to follow my journey through the PhD experience and to gain insight on how to best prepare for the graduate school application process.
I created this channel because I did not have access to many resources when I was applying for graduate programs. Now that I have been through two graduate school application processes, I want to share my knowledge and the helpful information I have gained through those experiences.
Additionally, for the past four years, I have been working as a Retention Specialist and Director for a federally-funded program at a higher education institution. I spent these four years helping over 400 students to apply to four-year institutions, attain scholarships, and navigate the higher education system. I created this channel in order to share my knowledge of college access as it pertains to graduate school.

Hi Ivan, thank you for sharing these great SoPs. You are obviously doing a great job. I am interested in knowing how I can use my professional experience to increase my chances of getting into a PhD. I have worked as the head of a food Microbiology lab, a tutor in a college and a food Manufacturing consultant for about 9 years now. I, however, want to transition in biosciences and contribute to Cancer research. Some tips, please?

The only research experience I have is my undergrad project which was wide and not particularly related to cancer research, though contained the analysis of some carcinogenic food addtives

Hi! This is a hard question to answer in one comment. I would have to see your SOP to give you pointed feedback. But in a nutshell, you should be describing your experiences with a research lens in mind. You need to show the committee that you understand or have a vague understanding of the research process and you need to show them why you are pursuing a PhD. I recommend identifying gaps in your knowledge and skills and use that info to describe how a PhD will help you fill those gaps and impact the field.

Hi Ivan, i'll be graduating next May with my Master's in Actuarial Science and is currently applying for PhD programs. I don't have any research experience since my current program is a Master's by coursework. How do I write an exceptional SOP?

Hi! This is a great question and I will answer it fully in an upcoming KZfaq video. In short, you need to think about how your experiences relate to the research process and speak about that in your statement of purpose. Every student has research experience the only difference is that sometimes it’s formal and other times it is not. Hi Ivan, thanks for your tips and tricks. I have a doubt. Should SOP contain name of a professor with whom candidate wishes to pursue PhD ? Only one name or multiple faculty's names?

You should definitely mention 2-3 faculty whose research closely matches your interests.

I have a video on this topic. But I earn around 32,000 for 9 months. I work 20 hours per week as a graduate student researcher and get my tuition paid for as well.
