I love watching college acceptance, etc., videos. Things are so different now then when I applied (way back in the late 90s!) I try to keep up with things as a mom, but also as an educator so I can help guide people in the right direction (granted my students are in 5th!) I noticed you’re from Gulf Breeze, which cracks me up that I somehow ended up on your videos because I live in Pensacola (a northern transplant here!) I hope you’re loving Stanford!

i find all of this information super fascinating. the one thing that really gets me is the privilege or wealth gap that is still so significant when it comes to who ends up being admitted to the ivy league. i've watched many of these college admissions videos and so many talk about having had experiences and summer internships abroad that have provided them with so much opportunity. of course not having the opportunity to do one single thing doesn't disqualify an applicant but it's definitely tough seeing the disparity amongst the different classes. i thought i had good educational opportunities available to me with my school district's career-oriented magnet schools but when you see the charter schools that some of these rich kids are going to, it really is on a whole other level. some of these 'feeder' schools literally send one in twenty students to an ivy league whereas maybe one student from my entire school would be accepted to an ivy. it really is a completely different world in some regions of the country
@alexcueva7328

The amount of privilege/opportunity that she had is insane. I found it funny that one of the best quotes in her essays was about going abroad to immerse themselves in culture and food. It seems like that’s vacationing in a different country, no?

lolol it was interesting to see your entire application reduced to the admissions officers' minimal comments and the final comment simply being "one to look at again". like you put so much into this and you seem very smart and talented but to an admissions officer you're still just one of many with great potential

@@ivan6311 lots of schools give financial aid. Lots of schools also do not cost $300K for a bachelors. Unless he has a scholarship financial aid is still money he doesn’t have. I know this because parents who have the money to pay usually don’t have kids who work at McDonald’s. Don’t fall for the prestige of a school, it’s not as important as it used to be

SPIV = Self-Presentation and Intellectual Vitality. That can be a tough one to prepare for. For the self-presentation part, I was coached beforehand by a professional taxidermist. I think I might have overdone it though, since although the poses during the interview were OK, it might have cost me some points on the vitality part.
