Trying out a new OBD2 meter and wanted to show some live data meanings and how it can be helpful when troubleshooting. I also show how to do a quick check to see if your oxygen sensors are responding and go over various O2 sensor types.

I just wanted to make sure I posted a comment about this video, starting with THANK YOU! For taking the time to even make this video, it's clear and very understandable. As a woman learning about cars because of this pocket draining 2008 Subaru Legacy😅, you have given me such a learning experience. I hope more people see this video. Wow, Thanks for such a nice message! I really appreciate that! and the sub also! Sorry for the late response, I have been dealing with some family issues and haven't been around the PC as much. I do plan to do more videos again soon as things are settling down a bit here. Your comment makes me want to start another one right now, thanks again! :-) . I have a quick question if you don't mind me asking. I was trying a new format on my last couple videos doing whiteboard drawings then going into live video ( Since I like whiteboards for learning myself ) But they don't seem to get many views. It takes a little longer to make the whiteboard videos and I was just wondering if you happened to see one of them and what your opinion would be? (compared to this video). I wondered if I might be wasting time trying to do this whiteboard stuff. If you haven't seen one of the whiteboard videos then just ignore this question :-). Extremely helpful video. Yes, it's noted that it doesn't tell you for sure what might be wrong w/ O2 sensor, but does do a good job in interpreting the scanner tool info and if your sensor is kaput the scan tool should pick that up.pretty easily.

Great series! I own a couple scanners and do all my own mechanic work along with friends and family and just recently bought a newer Autel al319 inexpensive scanner specifically for the live data. It’s really amazing how much information and features you can get with a cheap scanner these days compared to when I got my first one 15 years ago that was 5x the cost lol. you went over the basics but that’s where someone has Gotta start out to use the live data and interpret values for troubleshooting. I found the videos helpful and they are easy to understand for the average diy. I’ll definitely be checking out the rest of your channel!

Past few months I been noticing noticeable amount of fuel economy with my mazda3. No CEL, but can o2 sensor still could be slowly getting bad? Had my spark plugs changed, no improvement to fuel economy. While doing a oil change today, I did a throttle body cleaning, we'll monitor and see how it is during next tank of drive. What else could cause bad fule economy? (things like tire pressure, etc... has been all checked out). I do have a old OBD2 bluetooth scanner I bought 10+ years ago with using Torque Pro app. I have only used it for scanning CEL, not sure which sensors I should monitor to check for my issue or how.

Hi, nice video.. very usefull I just did the test on my car and S11 and S21 looks they are working pretty good and fluctuation is correct, but in the downstream the voltage is keeping stuck at 0.28V in both banks, should i run the car for some minutes before do the downstream test? I am doing this test because time to time (mostly when i go uphill) the service engine soon light is flashing and OBD code i got is P0340 relates with bank 2 threshold no efficient. I replace my Cat about 1 year ago so I hard for me to think CATs are the problem.

I have a 2003 toyota camry sensor 2 fluctuates and then drops to zero at times while driving... the car is running fine but throwing a p0420 code for the cat... trying to check all options before going for the cat

I have a car that I have been chasing a P0172 code (rich condition). This will help me narrow it down to check if my 02 sensors are failing.

use a metal rod and listen to your injectors... one of them is probably stuck open. symptoms include longer start times, because the fuel pressure bleeds down, rich conditions, catalytic converter overheating and melting down plugging the exhaust. Loading up at idle, will cause constant high negative - fuel trims. washes the engine oil off the cylinder walls increasing friction and lowering compression in the problematic cylinder.

I have 1 downstream stuck at 0.1 volts at idle all the time. Rarely goes up to follow the other which is at 0.6. Probably bad?

Between the two scanners, which would you recommend?

If i had to pick between one of those two, I would probably go with the ThinkOBD due to the fact that the software is able to be upgraded for it from your PC. If the Amtifo was up-gradable they could probably add Fuelsys1 which wasn't showing up on mine. I think being software up-gradable is a pretty good feature to look for when buying any unit. (although you are still at the whim of the manufacturer to actually put out new versions). But I think both were a good value and give you a lot of info at that price point.

The O2 sensors should be bouncing back and forth from rich to lean... this is what cleans off the catalytic converter ensuring it's lifespan

I think the O2 is bad since it is staying around 1ish. However, it is supposed to switch values up and down. Bad sensor!

No that is correct. The value 1 represents "14.7:1" and any plus or minus value from 1 is actually plus or minus from 14.7:1. At idle the air/fuel ratio is always trying to be as close as possible to 14.7:1, obviously it can't stay there perfectly so any tiny fluctuations from 1 like -0.995.. 1.010..-0.998.... are completely normal and working properly

This video is pointless, doesn't tell you how to tell if you if the sensor is good or bad. Basically he did not add any value to what your device tells you.
