Hey guys! As requested, here is a video of me reading a few essays that I submitted on my Yale & Emory applications. Of course, I wrote many many many more essays (scrolling through my essays for this video really brought me back to stressful times), but these are the two longest ones on my QuestBridge application. If you guys would like to see more essays/content, let me know in the comments and don't forget to like + subscribeeeee

Valerie, I normally don't comment on KZfaq. After listening to your essay, it touched me as I was in similar situation growing up as an immigrant. I came to America 40 years ago from Vietnam, and raised by a single parent as well. At the time, we are struggled financially to make ends meet. Today, I have a 17 year old daughter who will be applying to college this year. That is the reason I am watching these college essay videos in hope that I could help her. Yale is my daughter's dream school. I am sure that your mother is so proud of you. I wish you and your family success!

Thank you so much for sharing your essays. They're very well-written and relatable. I respect your courage and your strength after going through the difficult moments. I wanted to ask you something. I am currently a middle schooler and becoming a high school freshman soon. So my question is, what exercises(reading and writing) have been the most effective in advancing your writing skills? I would really like to become a powerful and skilled writer like you, but I'm not quite sure where to start... This is very personal but I'm writing this becuase I would like to ask you another. There was not a single moment that I refused to read books, but at some point, I developed this 'reading anxiety'. As rare as it is, I'm not so sure about it but I know that I'm dealing with the anxiety to understand the meaning of every words and sentences while reading. When you are reading, have you ever experienced anything like this? Do you feel there is a need to understand everything as you read? I look forward to seeing your replies.

Thank you so much! Your essays are truly beautiful. What's your biggest piece of advice for a rising sophomore? I go to a super competitive high school, and I'm afraid that could negatively impact my chances of getting in :(
@valnnguyen
@valnnguyen 3 жыл бұрын
sunybunny aj hey! My high school wasn’t competitive in a sense where the students were competitive, but there were manyyyyyy students who were wayy smarter than me. If you want to stand out, you need to find a different approach to tell your story, aside from academics. My best piece of advice is honestly that there are MUCH MORE qualified applicants than there are seats for qualified students at these schools, to the point where is almost like a lottery. (For instance, you have to hope your admission officer is having a good day when he/she reads your application, or that in whatever stack of applications he/she decides to read yours stands out, or that he/she resonates with your essay-different officers have different opinions + many other factors.) Not getting into these schools does not equate to anything about yourself. College is what you make it :)) don’t beat yourself up for it because I am 100% sure everyone will end up exactly where they’re supposed to be.

These essays are amazing!! Do you have any tips for brainstorming ideas or for finding the "right" language to use when writing? or at what point should I send my essays to teachers to be reviewed?
@valnnguyen
@valnnguyen 3 жыл бұрын
Angel don’t worry about using the right language when you’re first drafting! This makes writing veryyy slow and this is when ppl often have writers block bc they’re trying so hard to make it sound good first time around. Just get all your flowing thoughts down FIRST without worrying about how it sounds, and then once you’ve written out basically all you’ve wanted to say then you can revise and add creative/eloquent language elements. Some people can write things beautifully at first try, but most ppl require many rounds of revision! Once you’ve exhausted your best effort, then it’s time to take it to your teacher to be reviewed. They will give you some pointers, you make edits, and then you may decide to have that same teacher read it again

For anyone who’s feeling down: Romans 8:18 “The pain you’ve been feeling can’t compare to the joy that is coming!” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Whatever is going on right now, have faith, your situation will get better. :) Jesus bless anyone reading this and have a great day!!🥰✨💖
