In Book 6, Francesca's book 'When he was Wicked' Julia Quinn was much more focused on consent. All the sex scenes in that were consensual. Even if there was some regret afterwards, Julia made a point for both parties to verbally consent before and during the sexual acts. Though this book is still problematic and manipulative as a man (no spoilers) aims to get Francesca's consent at the time so after she can't say she got carried away and didn't agree to sex. But I agree, in earlier books there are consent and violence issues. Benedict and Anthony threaten violence and attack/hurt women at some point. In book 2, Anthony deliberately stands on Kate's hand and keeps it there for a few seconds to teach her a lesson. And in several books he threatens violence to Kate and other women e.g Lady Featherington. In book 3, Benedict keeps aggressively persuing Sophie and trying to seduce her even though she says 'no' many times. He doesn't listen to her and makes her life difficult by doing so. At the pond he grabs her ankle so she can't get away and tries to seduce her despite her protests. To me, he gives off vibes that 'I saved you from being gang raped and as my reward you will do as I want and be my mistress'. Benedict has an internal struggle not to strangle Sophie at one point. Plus, he does actually attack and strangle Sophie's step mother. Its framed as he does this for Sophie because her step mother mistreated her and, perhaps, is meant to be seen as chivalrous and romantic. But I think its scary tbh. You can definitley tell these books were written a few decadea ago where people had different views on consent for both genders, what constitutes as sexual assault, toxic behaviour, aggression and violence. Don't get me started on what Daphne does to Simon and how he is framed as the one in the wrong for 'lying to her', in both book 1 and the show season 1, she never faces repercusions for that.

@@xwinwinwinx and then again in book 7, Hyacinth, he seduces her so that she can't say no to marrying him once she finds out that he is a bastard. Consent has to be informed, plus he weaponized sex and desire to get her to do what he wanted. I really didn't like that part (although, the rest of the book is great)

For Eloise, if she was going to get married, I imagined it would be with some kind of explorer/adventure/traveler. A more fun but mature version of Colin instead of someone more like Anthony who is straight-laced and has so much responsibility. I can't imagine her enjoying her life as mistress of the house.

Honestly Philip is so perfect for her and like he’s passionate about wee things and gardening in his own way, like her story comes when she’s like 28, so she’s matured into herself and Philip accepts her for who she is and she wants to look after those kids and it does work! I would definitely also be annoyed if it felt wrong to her character, but it works and it feels right, and is the happiness she deserves at that stage :)

I think the rape scene is much worse in the books for a number of reasons. Firstly, Simon is both incredibly intoxicated and asleep when Daphne starts, and she is fully aware that what she's doing is wrong. Furthermore, Daphne frequently talks about how she feels like she *should* feel bad, but that she absolutely doesn't. I think its abhorrent in the books and I have no idea why they kept it in the show, even if it was watered down.
@thisstoryaintover
@thisstoryaintover 2 жыл бұрын
Oh totally agree that it's still extremely abhorrent in the book. But I think the show is just as bad since we also see Simon verbally say "Wait" but Daphne keeps going. In the book we get Daphne's inner thoughts and sort of carelessness so it's a bit more obvious but the show portrays her as being just as remorseless. Either way, I agree that it was horrible that they decided to keep that scene in when they've had no qualms about changing other aspects of the books.

I think a couple of people have mentioned it before, but Francesca's story was actually my favorite of the series. She is always left out (in the show and in the books) and hers is the most fascinating story out of all of them. I would recommend reading Francesca's story (when you have time obviously) because it is a very satisfying novel in the series.

Romancing Mr Bridgerton is my favourite because of the character development, maturity and faults that Colin exhibits after Pen has put him on a pedestal for over a decade. They are both different people now, Pen has a confidence and wit now she is a spinster and can relax more. Whereas Colin eventually realises the love of his life has been in front of him all along. Typical of a man, even today 🤦‍♀️ when he realises this, he's completely knocked for six & certain traits appear. A bad temper, possessiveness of Penelope & jealousy that she has had a purpose and he lacks one. All human failings which gives this book depth. The friends to lovers is a brilliant trope & one of my favourites 😍 Added to that, a fuller figured heroine seen as beautiful, a goddess and sexy is FANTASTIC and positive for us larger ladies who deserve love no matter size, shape or colour. It's funny, poignant and sexy too. Closely followed is To Sir Phillip With Love. Eloise is just amazing. The scene with her brothers is incredibly funny and Julia's blunt referral to Sir Phillip's 'intimate' life since the death of Marina was interesting to say the least 💗

When it comes to Eloise, I think she always was surrounded by the privilege of being a Bridgerton. So she had always gotten things to go her way and then suddenly she's all alone and things are no longer going her way. Her siblings are all getting married, having children, moving away, and having their own lives separate from the Bridgerton family. Her mom is more focused on her younger siblings and her grandchildren. And then Eloise's beloved best friend who she thought that they would finally be free to grow old together. Getting to go on all these adventures together as spinsters, only for Pen to get married to Colin. So suddenly Eloise is alone, left behind, and lonely. She's lost her partner in crime and I think Eloise starts to face the realities of life that she ignored when she was young. Phillip and she got along in their letters, he's a decent guy, and it would be an adventure, everyone else around her is pursuing romance, so why not her? She figures she'll just pop down and have a quick meet to see if they would work in person. And so Eloise being Eloise just shows up somewhere impulsively and it blows up in her face prompting her to have to get married because of the scandal and damage to reputation. I also always thought that Eloise's book shows how people change as they get older. How the things you want at twenty years old aren't exactly the things you want at thirty. That isn't good or bad, it's just life.

I think that's why I always enjoyed her book. If she would have been the same as when she was a teenager it would have been boring. No character development, nothing. Her book shows that she's ready to start that part of her life.. This book is a friend to lovers/marriage of conveniences romance so we aren't going to get all that bickering or first impression because technically they've known each other for a year and they like each other, as friends at least. I know a lot of people think she settled but I like her story. She's really mature and realized that she wants a family of her own as well and just because it happens after everyone is already married doesn't make it any less valid.
@banannakis6723
@banannakis6723 2 жыл бұрын
@@stefaniebetancor5827 That's what I like about her story too, that she's not the same as she was. She's grown and changed more into a young woman who has more experience and maturity. Phillip isn't some stranger, they have been talking together for about a year I believe and they are friends of sorts. They have been communicating and learning about each other over a long span of time. I think a lot of people think that the Eloise in the show is going to stay the same way as she always has, but that would be boring. Where is the character growth in that? Eloise might not completely want a life like Daphne for example, but I think that Eloise realizes that marriage and having children aren't the big bad or scary thing that she thinks it is.

consent was lacking to some degree in every book, sometimes HEAVILY, as with daphne straight r*ping her husband and benedict coercing consent after sophie said no repeatedly, sometimes less so, like when anthony borderline denies kate her request to delay sleeping together (even tho she ends up asking shortly later, still iffy). In Eloise character, I think a lot of people misunderstand her want and push for freedom. She doesn’t have it because she never wants to get married or have kids. I think at the core of Eloise, she doesn’t want those things because in her head they go hand and hand with a loss of freedom. And a huge loss of autonomy, and I think that is what Eloise really fears. I feel like season two of the show really showed her in a whole different light. As the romantic she is, she just also knows how loss one can get when in love and that is why she is as fierce as she is. Plus she just doesn’t like anyone telling her what to do 😂. I do want to give a huge kudos to Netflix tho because it seems like they seen how lacking both Eloise and Penelope’s stories were. Sooo they started buffing them out earlier in the series. With the hope that by time we reach them we have such a deep and robust understanding of each character, that we kind of WANT that romance and fairytale for both of them. I mean already in season two, I’m ready for Colin and Penelope to be together 😂. So I can’t wait to see how their story comes together later.

We should not always expect typical hate/love or Rich/Poor love stories, we should learn to accept and fall in love with different characters that have different POVs and respond differently to life, I'm not Eloise and I might not have fallen in love with Philip, but then again *_IM NOT ELOISE._* Eloise's love story was unique in its own way, and I personally LOVED IT! Because as much as I love Eloise for being "Herself" and totally feminist, as much as I loved her character development without changing her nature, for instance, she suddenly showed up at Romney Hall unannounced, without telling anyone where she was going or even asking for permission (keep in mind that this is the 18th century), she had stayed about 10 years turning down suiters to the mere thought of how she and Penelope will grow up "alone" as some spinsters, BUT when she found out that Penelope is no longer to take part in those thoughts of hers, she suddenly starts to think about Sir Philip's offer Seriously... after ignoring his letter for almost a month! Yes, we ALL wished for her to be the STRONG, INDEPENDENT, FEMINIST OF BRIDGERTON *BUT* this has NOTHING to do with falling or getting to experience love! *AND* if you had paid attention you would've seen how Eloise repeatedly was shocked by her "weird" attachment to Oliver and Amanda, it wasn't really _HER_ but it was something deep in her heart that made her strangely caring and loving when it came to them, something she never knew existed in her! AND even if many of you might wish to ignore this fact, unfortunately for you, ELOISE WANTED LOVE, she just never knew it would be that affectionate, she never thought of wanting to experience that unfamiliar feeling called "LOVE" until her Partner In Crime, Penelope was to marry and leave her by her own. And when she did, she realised she made the best decision of her life... Finally, I REAAAAALLLY hope that Netflix do some changes in Philip cause he's kind of.....you got me so yah Along with some more jealousy and other "falling in love" scenes.

I feel like because of the TV show, people tend to forget that these are stories set in the 19th century. The women did not have a position of power, they depended on the men in their family and for them, being a spinster is the worst thing that could happen to them. That is why Eloise's story is not bad, it makes sense according to the time. In the books, Eloise was never opposed to marriage (as she was in the tv series) she just couldn't find someone she liked enough to accept. Besides that she had Penelope as her comfort zone, she could be a spinster but with the company of her friend, not alone. So when Penelope gets married, she makes her decisions and goes to Sir Phillip. In my opinion, her story makes sense because it follows the personality of Eloise from the books, someone who wants to make decisions for herself and does so independently of others. It is not a crazy love story, but a coldly planned one and that is Eloise. Besides Sir Phillip is everything she needs, he may be not what she wants, but what she needs. About consent yes it is wrong as it is portrayed according to what we think today, but at that time it was normal. Men believed they could rule over women's bodies. The most historically inaccurate thing in the novels is all those women having orgasms. p.d english is not my first languageee

thank you for mentioning the time period. they are all so naive and have little control of their lives that its easy to fall in love fast. we also bring in our idea of romance on them when maybe a men being nice to them and a person they can get alonng with is all they needed. as they keep mentioning love matches where the minority. so they are the lucky ones.

My favorite thing about Phillip is the fact he is very obviously not the traditional ideal lover; he isn't the perfect charmer like Colin, he isn't a notorious rake like 4 out of the 8 male leads in this series (fucking *4*, I think that this is more than enough), he is awkward, he isn't a particularly romantic person and he doesn't always know the right thing to say. But he feels real, his struggles as a parent and a husband feels real, and even if this isn't the most steamy or romantic book in this series, it has fascinating flawed characters that complete each other in the most perfect way possible

I loved Benedict story so much!!! Also, with Eloise, I feel like the Show Eloise and Book Eloise are different characters, in the show she doesn’t want to get marry true and that’s totally fine, but Book Elosie is not that she doesn’t want, she is “picky”, nobody caught her attention til that point in her life, and people tend to think that Book Eloise is the same to Show Eloise, so they hate on her character or called it a disappointment because of that (I’m not saying that she did it on the video, just telling what I’ve found in comments from other videos)

For Eloise's book specifically, I think it's important to note when it comes to Show!Eloise and Book!Eloise that show Eloise is 18-ish. Book Eloise is 28 she has been through more in life, she got to experience the "single life" out of choice - this is something that's going to be really challenging to the show to overcome bc a person at 18 =/= a person at 28

So I guess thats why its a tiny bit above Anthony but I love them both. Francesca's book is my third favorite I think and I also love Hyacinth book because of a mystery aspect and lots of Danberry content. I hope reading the book before watching seasons 2 doesn't ruin the season for you cause things are quite different. Reading the comments, most were focused regarding the consents shown in the book or the lack thereof. It is true that there were many problems with consent with most of the books but seeing it on another perspective, it is exactly how consent worked back then. Jullia Quinn had problem with consent as most say but I think she captured well how the thinking was in the early 1800's. It's a hard pill to swallow, especially since we have different view now. Daphne with what he did to Simon. Anthony with his honeymoon with Kate. Benedict not understanding "No" and etc. I'd give a little thought about Daphne, slightly relating it to the 'thinking' in the 1800's. Bearing a child was the greatest higher form of a happy marriage, providing an heir (as normalized by the society) but we all know that Simon didn't want an heir. Daphne had always wanted a child, it was understandable but now, add the pressure of society's expectation of her especially since she had become a duchess. She is then most definitely more strong willed to have a child and yes, what she did was absolutely wrong. I think she could have waited for Simon, they could have definitely worked it out together in the future but she felt lied to hence why I also have a grudge on how the daughters are so kept on the dark regarding sex and just described it as 'marital act' ( making it feel like it could only happen when married). Like how is one to learn with just "it's all part of the marital act" and not furtherly talking about it, I get the embarrassment but again, it is something not to be discussed back then. They enter the marriage so naïve, that's why I wouldn't fault Simon because he thought Daphne understood what he was talking about but, on some level, Simon did take advantage of her naivete. Another point regarding Daphne. Daphne would be the one on the receiving end of the blame and all the shame why they (if they didn't have an heir immediately) don't have a child yet, another grudge from me against society, yey. Love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you, I agree! Of course, seeing it through 21st century lenses, it is definately wrong, but knowing that things were quite different back then, and seeing it through the eyes of a young, uninformed and naive woman of the early 1800s, you can imagine such situations happening. To be realistic, many women were probably often raped during their marriage because of the husband's "marital rights". Unfortunately consent was not really considered much at that time. If the readers don't like what is happening in historical regency romances, they'd better not read medieval ones....
@lghl3933
@lghl3933 2 жыл бұрын
@@barbarafrings9231 Yes! I've replied my thoughts regarding the consent and continuing not to read it if they don't like it to several comments but they've refused to see it from the view point in those times. They claim that it destroys the fantasy or the romance atmosphere that the author is giving. Some commenters have acknowledged it but they wished that Julia Quinn should've watered the issues down not knowing that it was already watered down. If she really followed everything, you would have already read multiple abuse, mentally and physically to the women especially when they have expressed their opinions, I'm thankful Julia had watered it down, my heart couldn't probably take the awful things that would've happened. Julia Quinn followed the history, the war and everything, it wouldn't entirely make sense if she didn't followed the ways and thinking back then unless it is entirely her fiction world like Shadow and Bones or the books that Sarah Maas has written.

I think it’s important to note how Eloise in the show and Eloise in the book are 10 years apart. She has matured and has her own wants for her life by this time, and I think they should be able to show this properly in the show. It’s not a bad thing to want to be married and have a family, like you can do that AND still have desires for rights for women and be an intelligent, enlightened thinker. Like Jo March. Like Meg March. It’s perfectly good and admirable to want these things at the same time. It doesn’t make Eloise any less of a person that she feels lonely and wants a family of her own. And I think if they actually keep decent writing in the show, they can show this fully. Fingers crossed anyway!

I am maybe the only reader in the world that like Sir Phillip. He seems more real and less than a prince on white horse. SPOILERS He is a second child that never want the responsibilty to lead the family. He just wanted to study his plants in peace, happy to let his older brother manage the family. Suddenly the death of his brother totally changes his life, and the death of his father certainly did not help. Nonetheless, he managed to move forward by marrying a woman he did not love, only to honor his dead brother. Years pass, he has children, but his wife decides to commit suicide, she decides that death is preferable to a future with him. If we think a bit that's heavy trauma. He just want to be free but all his life was just dictated by others. And then he meet Eloise, finally something "happy" in his life. When he say "You said we have a problem... Because to me This-us-is heaven" and "You've got to be happy", i feel that. The big problem is that with the brothers+the children+Benedict and Sophie, there is little room to let the characters breathe. But still one of my fav charcters (i Know i'm the only one in that, for most of people is one of the worst XD)

I also liked Phillip’s character. He had real depth and substance. Prior to Eloise, life had always happened to him because of duty and responsibility. He was a man of honor who despite being in a loveless marriage, did not seek the comfort of other women. He loved his children, but was afraid he’d hurt them. His character makes you feel pain for him. There’s so much to love about Sir Phillip Crane and can’t imagine why so many people didn’t see it.

After watching Bridgerton, I immediately went out and bought and read all the books. This is my order of liking: Francesca's book is the best, even the title When He Was Wicked. Lots of great writing and passion, I need a Michael. Then Eloise, her book takes place when she is 28, more mature and after hearing of Penelope's engagement to Colin, life altering. Then Anthony, Benedict and Daphne's book. They were all good. The ones I liked the least were Colin, Hyacinth and Gregory. But as a whole, I loved them all and read them in 1.5 week. Sir Phillip was a floored hero and I really liked the way Eloise still saw past that and fell in love with him. When he sent that dried flower to her in his first letter, I was sold.

Will you make a review or smth about season 2? I am interested in what you think since they made many changes that I personally like and would wanna know if you do too or no! Also the fourth book was really disappointing for me as well...probably the one I like the least in the series tbh.

Based on how the show is going so far I really hope that they change Eloise's story, I think they could even completely change up the her story. I need the power house. I also feel like we need a queer main bridgerton and idk if we will get that from benedict (like he comes of as potentially being bi, but I feel like we need an end game queer, lead couple)

I havent read the books but I have read that most people dont like eloise story. This makes me quite sad as I think her character in the show is great, and her own story had great potential

I like Eloise's book and Sir Philipp, although I know many don't like him and the storyline. 🙂

I've only read the first 5 books, but Anthony's story was my favourite, and Penelope's was my least favourite. So far that's true of the series too for me!
