Speaking Scottish 101 (for this video) A = I Ae = of Al = I'll Am = I'm Aye = yes Bairn = child Bird = girl Cannae/canny = can't Dae = do Fae/fay = from Gonny = going to Greetin = crying Hawn = hand Ken = know Lassie = girl Ma = My Maw = Mum/Mom Meltit = Melted/high/drunk Nae = no/none Naw = no No = not Nut = head Oot = out Pal = friend Quid = pounds Ragen = raging/angry Tae/tay = to Tidy = attractive Wae/way = with Wains = children Wan = one Wanty = want to Wee = little Wit = what Ye/yer = you/your In summary, most words end in 'ae' for no logical reason, and insults are also used as friendly names or greetings. So aye, there yees go :)

Shannon McCluskey Words ending in "ae" generally require less movement of the mouth. For example, "wae" is a little quicker to say than "with". It's one of the small things that makes us able to speak so fast, since there's less mouth movement in a sentence

I honestly feel like it'd be impossible for me to mimic a Scottish accent, but one time I had a phone conversation with a Scot and he told me after awhile of conversing with him that I was starting to talk in one, so maybe if I don't fight it at all and live there for a year I'll pick it up. OTOH I can very easily say the words "fantastic" and "bru" in a South African accent. Maybe "braai" too.

Dare Zeepo I'm not even a European and I've heard much Scottish to understand all those slangs and I was dying lmao. Tip: For all the non-native Scottish people, try reading the same sentence word-by-word phonetically in a relatively British accent (even though its not even a wee bit close to British accent). If you're smart enough you'll understand everything in it.

Because the only Lassie most Americans have heard of is the famous collie, so our first thought when we see that word is "dog". I only know about the real meaning of it through having Scottish friends. Same with "hen", "bird", and "bairn".

Right? I grew up with a bit more diversity I suppose. I have always known that lass, lassie and (having only heard it before and not seen it written being the reason for my spelling of it) bird were women. Met someone at a bar once that had a VERY heavy Scottish accent. Had to get him to slow his speech until I got a couple of drinks in me. Then I had no problem understanding every word. Still cracks me up thinking about that.

Scots is a real language descendant from Middle English just as Modern English is. I love the Scottish sense of humor.
@lannapeanut
@lannapeanut 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, Scots is a language too. In the highlands, they mostly spoke Gaelic, in the lowlands and Ulster we mostly spoke Scots. And she's pretty much right about the Middle English thing too (England didn't create English, English actually has Germanic roots because it was actually invaders and settlers that brought it here, then it evolved over time -- in Scotland, that evolution was Scots). Nowadays most of us tend to speak a combination of Scots and Scottish English. Unless Gaelic is your first language, you do speak a dialect of English.
@lannapeanut
@lannapeanut 6 жыл бұрын
Clearly you're the one who doesn't have a clue. I'm Scottish, but I'm not from the Highlands so if there's another word for the language people up there speak/spoke that I don't know of, fair enough, but that isn't what we're talking about here. You said Scots isn't a language, you were wrong. It is both a language and a people, and the language differs from the Scottish English dialect (if you've ever read any Robert Burns poetry, the difference is quite blatant). And you were wrong in saying it didn't originate from Middle English.
@saoralba4236
@saoralba4236 6 жыл бұрын
@Nicholas, Scots Gaelic was spoken in the Highlands and seems to be promoted highly there nowadays with SNP beng in Government,,, but Gaelic was never the language of all of Scotland,,,it was never spoken in the Lowlands ...and Scots is a real language.. Scotland has 3 languages (English/Scots/Gaelic) and a collection of different dialects.
@sheogorathdaedricprinceofm320
@sheogorathdaedricprinceofm320 6 жыл бұрын
Gaelic is Scotland's native language as it developed here and is only spoken here but it's origin is Ireland and the language diverged over hundreds to thousands of years. It's still commonly spoken all along the west coast and the Highlands but the majority of us speak a dialect of English.

Navet Dusang, it's like calling a Mexican a Puerto Rican. They are two separate countries. You never call a Scot a Brit and vice versa.
