The opportunity to travel has been the greatest contributing factor to my understanding of life, the world and my happiness, but it can be a stressful a scary thought for many. Getting on a plane and going to the other side of the world sounds easy enough, but there are a lot of things to consider. If you can afford it, it is absolutely worth the money to hire a guide. Someone that can help with the language barrier, food, transportation etc... But it is still very much possible to do it all on your own and have a very successful and enjoyable trip. I am fortunate to have gotten to travel quite extensively when I worked on cruise ships, but I am still learning a lot about how to travel within my own business. This is a list of things that I think will help you plan for your next trip, and I hope Japan is on that list. These are good things to consider for a visit to any country, but certain aspects are certainly important to consider for a trip to Japan.

One thing about travel medical insurance is that when you get over about 63 in BC, the cost gets very high very quickly, and if you have any pre-existing conditions can make it quite difficult to get. However, as you said, "never leave home without it".

You show us a side that just about no one does, and we really appreciate that! What you show us through your lens, no matter how dilapidated and abandoned they are, no matter how gorgeous and detailed they are, are all unique and simply beautiful. I can't wait to see where you take us on your next Destination Adventure Abroad. Wherever it is, I'm so here for it!!! Edit for a P.S.: those travel tips ... 👍🏻👍🏻. Keep safe and warm 🙏 ❤️ My mom and I moved from 100 mile house to forestburg alberta. It's-44 this morning. I look forward to your videos, no matter what time of year. Being able to see places I've never been to, or want to go to again, is great. On the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka in 2009 there was a hotel looking building, in the middle of nowhere before Mt Fuji, that had a Jesus statue, smiling and making a peace sign. Thought that was funny as heck, along with the Lego themed Highway Motel.

I really liked the Mexico videos. The build series, while not my cup of tea, was still enjoyable, because I enjoy your sense of humor. The Japan videos were AMAZING. I really do love your off grid videos as well, as I love nature, and love exploring as well. For as long as I have been watching you, I have to be honest and say that the quality of your camera/filming skills have constantly just gotten better and better. Keep up the amazing work. I promise as long as you keep making them, I will keep watching and liking! And Thank You for taking me with on all these amazing adventures!

Loved the JP series Dustin ! I'm lucky enough to have traveled in Japan several times now, and I agree that everyone should try to visit there at some time. I thought of 2 things as I watched the episodes ... (1) you never showed or discussed the subway systems in the cities and the incredible rail travel opportunities in Japan. The subways (and tram systems in some cities) really let you explore without getting into pricy taxi trips. Some of my most fun days were using the smallest, oldest and slowest train connections between country towns and temple complexes. And, of course, the amazing bullet trains (Shinkansen) between major cities .... zoom. (2) Another thing you might want to try, if you return to JP, is the expanding "camper van" and "motorhome" camping / travelling options available. I'll be traveling throughout Hokkaido the May in a small camper van with a friend ! We tried it in New Zealand and loved the freedom it provides. Cheers ! Looking forward to more of your adventures !! 😄

Travel insurance is a must. Can't agree more. Having hit the big 6-0 last year, and being very healthy, my travel insurance just to travel in the US last year took a huge leap up. My husband, who is not as healthy, but has his issues under control through meds, turns 60 this year and we are expecting an even bigger leap up. It may drastically reduce out travel outside of Canada. But, going without it isn't an option.

Your niche of exploring abandoned places should translate to world travels and it’s a bit baffling that those videos haven’t done well. I enjoyed both Mexico and Japan! I also enjoyed the build series, A: because the humor injected by Mic Chanik was spectacular and made the series (more Mic when appropriate) and your concept for the build along with total openness of cost was incredibly interesting and refreshing. I appreciate what the new rig has done and will do for you going forward. Idea: Next winter how about exploring abandoned ghost towns of the PNW, mining towns in Northern California, old homesteads in eastern Oregon, etc? Not quite the worldly travel of Japan but maybe it carries your central theme through winter and gets you in a better spot for 2025. A good winter might position you to take bigger risk winter of 2025 into 2026. Happy New Year to you and Mic!

For banks, well avoid banks they are very time consuming and require a "Seal" or stamp for transactions.. ATMs in 7 eleven or the Post Office (look for the red T everywhere) have always served us great. For phones, things are easier than they used to be, but we have found the portable Wi-Fi rentals available at the airport to be a total game changer. It's just unlimited mobile data, excellent for navigating and translating (if you need that), plus you can use Wi-Fi calling to reach anyone back home. Understanding that with Wi-Fi calling, your phone is tethered to your home address, so calling Japan would be international, but calling your family back home is local (even if you are actually in Japan). We just use the Line app to text each other locally in Japan, which avoids any long distance charges.

I've been to Japan many times, I have relatives living in Japan, if you want to go to Japan consider at least learning Abit of japanese, in the big city like Tokyo it's not a problem if you don't know any japanese but in the country side it's really hard to communicate if you don't know any japanese. And please don't be offended if some restaurants or cafe won't let you in cause your a foreigner it's just like that in japan😂 and note this English menu tend to have higher prices compare to japanese menu😂 and if you're in Tokyo and a police officer stop you and ask to search you don't be upset just let them search you that's normal in Japan, note this in Japan the police can detain you for weeks just for acting suspicious so be polite.

Thank you Dustin for an interesting series. One thing that surprised me, was how inexpensive Japan is now. When I grew up my Dad went there on business many times and he always remarked how expensive it was. Times sure have changed. The other thing that stood out was how inexpensive food is. I guess it really surprised me just because of how much food prices have inflated here in the USA. Last thing I wanted to express is that it would be nice if the US and Canada would ditch the stupid tipping culture. It has really gone way too far.
