Part 6: Descent
In this tutorial series, we cover all the basic steps required to fly the default Airbus A320 from A to B in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Whilst the series is aimed at beginners and people new to the A320, it still aims to follow real-world Airbus procedures where possible.
In Part 6, we set the aircraft up for the approach and then discuss and carry out the descent in Nice.
Please note this video and all its contents / materials, is for entertainment / simulation purposes only.

Thanks very much! I wanted to try and keep it simple as 1) The series is aimed at beginners, 2) the default Airbus doesn’t really allow for more realistic operations in its current state unfortunately. I’ll probably dive into the FBW mod at some point in the future and possibly do some more advanced stuff with that : )

Found these videos very useful! Still looks like a lot of bugs even now in the default A320 even compared to your videos from 2020. One question why is the ground speed on the screen (the one showing the range rings and waypoints) much higher than the airspeed on the PFD? Are they in different units?

I'm very happy to hear that you found the series useful, Jon! The default A320 has always been pretty buggy but, I guess that may have changed, now that we have the iniBuilds A320 by default (as a result of SU15) - I really ought to update this series at some point. . . The speed given on the PFD, is your Indicated Airspeed (IAS). This is basically a measure of pressure, ie how many particles of air do you have going into the pitot tube / over the wing. IAS is important, as it relates heavily to the aircraft's performance. On the ND you have True Airspeed (TAS) and Groundspeed (GS). As the aircraft climbs, the air becomes less dense and so, you will need a higher TAS in order to maintain the same IAS. TAS is your actual speed through the air and GS, as the name would suggest, is your speed over the ground. These 2 speeds will differ, depending on the wind (eg, a TAS + a tailwind = a higher GS). I hope that clarifies things a little? Cheers and all the best! : )

Have you tried the Flybywire a320 mod? It’s got many improvements on the default aircraft.

I haven’t yet. I do intend to at some point, but wanted to wait for it to mature a bit more before I made a vid on it. It’s impressive what they’ve done with it so far though from what I’ve seen!

Heya, I have a question, when I'm in cruise section of flight, I changed the "selected" speed to 300 instead of the "managed" 285, but nothing changes, the aircraft remains at 285? and what detent am I supposed to have the throttle in whilst in cruise? I see "CL" "FLX/MCT" and "TOGA" ... but nothing designating a "cruise" detent? when I switch into either "TOGA" or "FLX/MCT" the aircraft speeds up to overspeed, speeds? argggggg, so trying to get my head around flying, operating this aircraft, lol

How to set the display where you track the route and distance like yours? Mine have 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 and have know clue what are those numbers.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 9 ай бұрын
I’m afraid I don’t fully understand the question RealFan. Are you wondering how to set the range on the NAV Display? That’s done via the EFIS control panel (as detailed in one of the videos). The real aircraft only has range options for 10, 20, 40, 80, 160 and 320nm, however the sim allows you to zoom in further (the numbers you mention are distances in nautical miles), so that you can see the airport layout on the NAV Display also. Does that answer your question? All the best : )

Great video but where did you get your descent altitude 11k from? Also where did you get your QNH and MDA
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mika! Both the 11K terrain and the MDA were based off real-world charts. Unfortunately this information isn’t available in-sim. Some parts of the world (the US for example) do have these sorts of charts freely available, otherwise you would have to pay for them. The QNH was from Skyvector. Unfortunately this may not always be valid in MSFS as the Live Weather and real-world Weather don’t always match up. Once you get closer to an airport, you should generally be able to tune an ATIS, but this isn’t very helpful for planning purposes. Hope that helps? : )

I’ve done everything for the descent and landing however my A320neo decided it wouldn’t go to the next waypoint and turned around so I had to fly and land manually how do I fix this? Or was it a one off bug
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 7 ай бұрын
That’s a very difficult question to answer Sir Crash, without knowing all of the specific details. It could be user error / it could just as readily be an issue with the aircraft. I haven’t flown the default A320 in quite some time but, historically, the aircraft really didn’t like performing DIR TO’s and would often turn around after actioning one, could that be your problem? Otherwise, perhaps your waypoints didn’t sequence correctly and the aircraft turned around to try and fly through the previous waypoint? Have you got things figured out now? Otherwise, do you have any further details you can offer? Cheers and all the best : )

I had something similar happen once just after takeoff, autopilot seemed confused and kept circling rather than flying to next waypoint. Never had before or since. Suspect a bug although as I'm fairly new to flying A320 I can't rule out user error.

Alot of steps you miss on the actual video when following. Flew for 40 mins and only hit Heathrow
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 ай бұрын
Hi Eagle, Do you mean to say that I missed a lot of steps out, or that you find you’re missing a lot of steps when you’re following along? I didn’t run the tutorial in real-time, as there would be a lot of superfluous video footage however, I certainly tried to include all of the pertinent steps for getting from A to B. From memory, the flight should take around 2 hours; 40 mins to Heathrow doesn’t sound too wide of the mark, if you’re including the takeoff and the departure etc : ) All the best!

How do you know when to decent?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 ай бұрын
Hi FM, I did explain that in the video (starting at around the 5 minute mark). A good rule of thumb in a bigger jet, is to use 4 x current altitude and that will give you the number of miles required (from destination) for the descent. The default A320 has seen quite a few improvements since this video was recorded so, I would imagine the descent arrow on the Nav Display and the TOD point on the PERF page of the MCDU, are probably now a little more accurate also. I hope that helps a little. All the best : )
