Part 7: Approach + Landing
In this tutorial series, we cover all the basic steps required to fly the default Airbus A320 from A to B in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Whilst the series is aimed at beginners and people new to the A320, it still aims to follow real-world Airbus procedures where possible.
In Part 7, we carry out the ILS approach and land the aircraft on runway 04L at Nice.
Please note this video and all its contents / materials, is for entertainment / simulation purposes only.

For the next waypoint, why you select the altitude of 4000 instead of flight plan mcdu 12000 altitude 7:06 ? And how we can find the accurate altitude for both climb and descent?

Thank you for this video series. Very informative and I love how you make these into short videos rather than an hour long one. When do you press the CSTR button on the FCU? I realised realised that it was pushed on this part and you didn’t explain at which part of the flight this should be pressed.

At 5:30 where do you see what V/S is needed to stay on profile? The thing you pointed towards was the wind indicator.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 5 ай бұрын
Hi Daniel, The aircraft won’t specifically tell you the VS required however, a good rule of thumb is to use your ground speed x 5 and that will give you the required VS to maintain a 3 degree descent profile (it was the ground speed that I was mousing over, not the wind vector). Eg. if your ground speed is 240kts, you will need about 1,200fpm to maintain a 3 degree profile. I hope that helps / clarifies things? All the best : )

Great tutorial series, thank you very much, I am learning a great deal from you. In your opinion, have you noticed the default MS2020 A320 improving at all since you made this tutorial? I know you mention several times through out the series about certain aspects that either don't work or are buggy. I'm just curious if you have seen them improve this aircraft over the past few years. Thanks again for your awesome work here, greatly appreciated!!

Hello Terry, Thank you very much for the kind words; I’m always really happy to hear that someone has benefited from the content, especially the tutorials! Undoubtedly, the default A320 has improved significantly since release. Truth be told, I haven’t flown it in a long while, but some of the bugs have been ironed out, the automation seems to have been improved somewhat also. The biggest area of improvement that I’ve noticed, is the aircraft’s flight model. The default A320 used to handle pretty terribly, to the point where even getting a decent landing out of it was a very tricky process) These days things are much better, though of course there is still room for improvement. My pleasure on the video and many thanks once again! All the best : )

Great video ! In real world, does the seat belt sign have to go on below FL100 or is it pilot discretion?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andrew! : ) It’s very much airline specific. I’m sure different airlines have different procedures for when the seatbelt sign should be turned on. It’s also open to pilot discretion as well though. For example, we might postpone turning it on, if we know we’re going to be holding before landing, or the passengers have been sat down for a long time (perhaps due to the weather) beforehand. As far as the SOPs I’m familiar with go, there is no specific requirement for it to be on below 10,000ft.

Is the default a320 neo still buggy in the current state of the simulation, or have the issue’s seen in this full course already been resolved?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 10 ай бұрын
Hi Estetikz, I’m afraid I can’t give you a concrete answer on that, not having flown the default A320 in quite some time but what I can say, is that the aircraft is certainly in a significantly better state than when I recorded this series. The default A320 was almost unflyable at the time of recording, but is now much improved and I seem to recall that some of the autoflight issues were addressed also. Of course, the aircraft still doesn’t have nearly as much depth as a payware addon (though the FBW mod is very good), but I believe the default A320 is now in a very useable state. I hope that helps a little? All the best! : )

My pleasure! The Fenix A320 is superb and worth every penny, but the default A320 offers a decent starting point. Once you’ve gotten to grips with the default A320, try the FlyByWire mod, that ramps up the realism quite a bit more. Happy flying! : )

Is QFE never used now days?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 ай бұрын
Hi JD, I know QFE is still used sometimes in GA flying (depending on the circumstances). So far as commercial flying goes, it might perhaps be airline specific but, in the airline I work for, we’re prohibited from using it (and there are very few places / airports around the world that would even give you a QFE). Cheers, all the best : )

Hi Taylor, The aircraft can land itself off an ILS (depending on certain criteria), yes. Far more often than not though, an ILS will culminate in a manual landing (after all, pilots do like to fly haha). I hope that clarifies things a little. All the best! : )

I don't get the "activate approach phase" - but I think it's because I click back and forth thru the phases (i dont click the activate option though) - is that correct? Seems a bit weird. I like this video - the A320 is good to fly but with the issues in MS - I have started to learn to land without the AP etc.
@OffRoadQC
@OffRoadQC 3 жыл бұрын
I never "activated" the approach phase through the MCDU, and it works in the sim. Maybe you have to do it in a real A320 though, I don't know...
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 жыл бұрын
At what stage are you generally trying to activate it? If you remain on your planned route and overfly the magenta “Decel” waypoint, the aircraft will automatically activate if for you, so maybe it’s already activated by the time you’re checking? Otherwise I can’t think why it wouldn’t be there. It’s perfectly fine to let the aircraft do it automatically, but more often than not we do it manually in the real world. You can cycle back and forth as much as you like between the pages and it shouldn’t cause you any problems. Trouble with the default A320 currently, you never know when something is bugged. . . It’s a shame the flight model of the default 320 isn’t a bit better, the aircraft is much nicer to fly in real life and much easier to land ha!
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 жыл бұрын
The approach phase will activate automatically if and when you pass through the “Decel” waypoint. It’s quite common to manual intervene in the real world is all : )

@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks : ) It’s tricky to say without seeing what you’re doing, but I suspect it’s probably a bug causing you issues. I filmed this series before the A320 had received any patches, which ironically, was when it was at its least buggy ha. Can you describe a little more what’s happening? Speed, alt, configuration, control inputs etc. Might be able to get to the bottom of it then : )

@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, the only things I can think it might be; 1) at what speed are you retracting the flaps? Possibly you’re too slow and the aircraft is stalling? 2) Make sure you haven’t got your flaps key bind / axis bound to something else as well. For example, if your flaps are bound to an axis, it might be that the sim has bound the same axis to pitch down. Otherwise though, doesn’t sound like your fault, I’m afraid it’s probably just a bug.

@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 ай бұрын
Hi YG, Absolutely! The learning curve can indeed be rather steep but, MSFS has been designed such that one can start out fairly simplistically (with a lot piloting aids etc). Most simmers are non-pilots and I spent many years simming before I qualified in the real world. Like most hobbies, it can be a little daunting initially but, the more one practices, the more things start to make sense (and there is an abundance of great tutorials available online these days). I hope that helps a little. Happy flying and all the best! : )

Seems you got bored and explained stuff less and less in each video. At this point you’re just doing stuff and saying what you’re doing without explaining any of it. You’re saying words I haven’t heard and pulling numbers from nowhere without even hinting at where I’d get that from. It went from a tutorial to a very specific guide for that one flight plan but trying to apply it to learning the aircraft in general is just a headache. I suggest future tutorials you don’t get yourself impatient making the video.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 6 ай бұрын
Hi JB, Well, you’re both correct and incorrect haha: I actually recorded the whole series in a single take and then chunked each part into an episode so, I wasn’t “bored” per se but, I don’t much enjoy making straight-up tutorial videos (this series was made on request) - hence why I don’t tend to make them anymore and given that this was one of my earlier vids, I still wasn’t all that comfortable recording either. I had intended for the series to be a guide to the Airbus only - not covering the basics of flight itself but, I realise there will always be some crossover between the two subjects. Were I to make the series again, there’s certainly a lot I would change. . . Cheers, all the best!
