Wow! what a bass player! As a newbie can do the first one at about 80% correct as never used a pick before so quite chuffed of my miserable attempt but after that gonna take a very long time to do any of the other bass lines, but he can make that bass sing love it

As far as I’m concerned…..fingers, pick, thumb……all good. Whatever best serves the SONG! I play all three ways. 👍🏽😁🎶🎶🔥❤️

Back in the day when I was a relatively new player (30-ish years ago), someone told me "Fingers, pick, fist, or dick -- whatever I need to hit the thing with to get the sound I want," and it really stuck with me, for some odd reason I can't pin down...

As soon as this video started I thought “they better mention Chris squire” and probably roundabout, because that’s one people will know, could have added king crimson, some of Tony’s most iconic basslines are using a pick

I started off playing with a plectrum as I was already using one on Electric and Acoustic guitars so I found fingers in natural at first.. I can see you have stirred things up with the fingers only fraternity! I do think there are times when only a pick will do and thank you for the material here.

Good content Freddie. It was timely for me, but from a modes theory viewpoint rather than being plectrum related. I was getting a bit frustrated with "Good Love is on the Way" by John Mayer (it's on our set list for a gig in a couple of weeks time). I was finding it boring to play as it's 3 chords and I couldn't get fills to sound right, even on the home key. Then you mentioned the Tool song used the Mixolydian mode and how we could tell. I then had the light bulb moment that "Good Love...." is in "A" Mixolydian (or at least I think it is). I'm now manging to work out fills that work in "A" Mixolydian and the bass line is way more interesting. Thank you.

I don’t think this discussion bears any real freedom for a bass player. It’s a matter of what kind of tone works for the particular tune. It is meaningless and limiting to say “now you are a real player…?” What tripe!
