Class James thank you for this great insight into this song after 40 years i always wondered who played i was 25 yeas old when it came out and i consider in my opinion the time to be the best era in music from the early 60's to 1989.

Wow! Congrats to you James and the whole team who put this video together! As we say over here, you folks hit it out of the park! So much good information, and a treat to watch! A well-deserved celebration of these terrific musicians.

First of all, congratulations to you James on eBassGuitar hitting 50K subscribers! Well-deserved! I'm spreading the word. Secondly, thank you for resurrecting Netflix's "We Are the World" extravaganza to give long-overdue recognition to the previously-uncredited extraordinary musicians without whom "The Greatest Night of Pop" wouldn't have aired. Well-researched with interesting stories about each musician's professional and personal life.

I started out with short scale basses. Harmony, guild semi hollow. It was a good while before I got a 34in scale fender jazz bass. I still like playing 3/4 30 in short scale.

There's no E natural. It goes from Eb to F, then to open G and then to a Bb octave.

My journey has bought me here. I suspect this is my solution too. I noticed when you got the flats on your hands relaxed more and your playing started to flow better thus, iterating the significance of having an instrument that feels and plays right.

OK. So, what's the problem with the way the bass guitar is built? I note you have a Sadowsky in your hands. I'm sure Roger would like to be let in on the problem and how to re-design the bass.

As usual, an excellent lesson and I need to learn this quickly to pay pay with some friends tomorrow.... It's a mini concert at my son's school. I'm now going to look to see if I can find anything on So Lonely Lonely. I've never really played anything that has a reggae ish feeling And also will need to change the keys But the change of care isn't a big problem for me. it's the notes and the groove. so thanks very much for this one

Great as always. In spots such as at 11:25 you show using the 10th fret of the D string but I don't see your fingers going there. Is there an error in the tab or am I missing something?

I’ll look into that. Use the fingering I explain in the video. The notes stay the same…

Excellent exercise, James. Sadly, as ever, despite filling in my email address I never get the free PDF sent to me. I don't what it is but it never works for me. I thought I'd try again after a long hiatus, but the technical problem remains. Never mind, keep up the great work.

I have that Kala Solid Body for half a year, as I have a Kala Journeyman for some years more now. They both are my favourite go-to basses meanwhile. Sure, my fretless Fender Precision sounds different, thats why there is still a place for it, but my first choice is the new Kala. Not only kids benefit from the small size and the light weight, old farts like me also appreciate that. Good quality, good sound, good price, good choice.

I'll try this. I usually play simandl due to old, worn and damaged hands and wrists not to mention an alien short pinky so anything that may help my fretting is welcome. After I commit the notes to muscle memory I put the backing track into Transcribe at 60%. I usually get up to 80-90% quite quickly, but that last hop to 100% is always a struggle. Some days making 80% is all my hands can do. When shifting remember to take your thumb with your hand. This little exercise will be "interesting" for me.

I don't know how you have this set up, but over high-quality earbuds there is an awful lot of string rattle. I wouldn't call it an overtone. I love short scales. I rock an Ibanez mikrobass, lots of tonal options there.
