I have always been a big motorhead and experimented with nitrous, alcohol injection, nitromethane, propane, racing gas and more. But I'm not familiar with a boost bottle what's inside of it? Compressed air, nitrous or something else? I might want to put it on my motorized bike.

I have a 175cc Yamaha with a boost bottle I installed in the mid 80's. The original purpose of a boost bottle was to give you a little boost. When racing you approach a turn with throttle closed. When exiting the turn you open the throttle. The vacuum in the crank and ports draw in the fuel mixture. At closed throttle a vacuum is created. A two cycle engine is not that quick revving at a low rpm so the boost bottle acts as a source of vacuum greater than the low revving crank could supply. This would allow a little more fuel in a little quicker. As soon as opening the throttle the effect was gone. Most folks do not race that way anymore and the 66cc engines do not have the torque to utilize quick exits from the turns. I never could tell any improvements from installing the boost bottle. Safe riding out there

Hey how do you get your bikes to idle? Do you have the clutch engaged or is it able to just sit there without taking off? Dumb question ik but my builds never want to sit and idle they all just want to move about 5-7mph when I let out the clutch

I think they work in very special cases and they have to be "tuned" per engine, its not just a bolt on power adder. they require planning and tinkering to get any gains or its a "fix" for an intake that has volume issues.

I built 1 and used the original 40mm intake like you tried,and drilled the same spot.I used the plan of matching cylinder volume with the bottle's.It cut the back-spit through the carb,but I saw no benefit.I replaced the intake with a CDHPower Reed valve and Did gain all kinds of torque.Happy Trails everyone,and Merry Christmas.

Very interesting video. I heard first about boost bottles two years ago. I drive a 250ccm 2-stroke MZ ETZ 251 built in East Germany and some people claimed that it runs smoother with such a device. Big 2-stroke engines do not run so well in idle (no stable rpm) and there is a problem when you run downhill. When you turn down the throttle the engine starts what we call in German "push jerking". I read that boost bootles will reduce both problems (no claim for more power or less fuel consumption). I installed a 200ccm bootled with a 12mm pipe between the carburetor and the motor. I was amazed how smooth it runs now in idle and going downhill reduces the jerking quite a bit. Probably a bigger bottle will be even better. I can confirm, that I have noticed no increase in power and also not less fuel consumption. So no need for it on small motors.

Hahahaha. First thank for your genuine videos. Your not out to promote or trash talk....just what an honest opinion for your experiences. I am a first time buyer of the 66cc/80cc Amazon China 2 stroke. I've been tinkering for just over a week....tore the motor right down the day it arrived (I took small engine repair in junior high school so I know how most factories pump engines out). For whatever reason this boost bottle article or perhaps an ad non the less I got sucked in(anything I can do for just a little bit more efficiency and ummmph). I sure wish I had see this video sooner. Dang. No matter how I work it I do need the offset intake. I noted how you tested for leaks on the welds. Thank you. I had another method in mind and yours is next to zero extra dollars and effective. I'm in the process now of mounting a Bluetooth boombox I diy'd into the frame as well as wiring in (totally separate from the bike's electrical)an Amazon headlight and rear signals w/tail light to a set of actual Street bike handlebar controls. I noticed you have a video on electrical. Just going that way now. Again thank you for your time and efforts to get information out to inquiring minds. From a covid free Canuck Cheers.

Thanks for saving me the time and money. I agree that it should be able to convince me without having to find some minut mileage or acceleration gain. I think you got it right and it helped a few mistuned motors but if it was what we wanted it to be their would be vids of people drastically improving their acceleration and the crashes likely to occur if they had a bolt on nos kit for a 49 cc 2 stroke. For now only highly competent people are the only ones making insane lawnmower motor bikes but soon enough someone will make a conversion kit to run jet fuel or something nuts and the fun will begin.

The problem i see with this test is the intake tube is different then what you had on the bike. some years ago I took my intake tube and added a boost bottle to it. i made my own bottle out of pvc pipe and messed with the size of the bottle. I ended up with a much bigger bottle then what you get if you buy one online and it worked great. it effected the low end and high end alittle but had a very noticable effect on how smooth the engine ran. I then changed out to a reed valve and it was much better.

The “boost bottle” supposedly affects the *resonant frequency* of the intake port. I recall reading about these things in magazines back in the early eighties. About all I can recall is the term “Helmholtz Resonator” from what I read forty or so years ago.
@dennisyoung4631
@dennisyoung4631 11 ай бұрын
Addendum to above: the resonator has its own frequency, and the tube acts to attenuate/broaden that resonant peak. The chief thing is that the resonance of the bottle needs to coincide with the resonance of the intake tract itself. The way this supposedly works is that when the intake port closes, the pressure wave in the intake tract that goes with closing goes up into the bottle, which is supposed to return another pressure wave right when the intake port opens. This only happens in a fairly narrow range of RPM, and harmonics of the resonant frequency that correspond to higher rev ranges. Its chief “use” back in the day was to deal with then-unexplained “dips” in the torque curve. It took a *lot* of time to get it right, and needed retuning every time the engine was changed in some trivial-seeming way, e.g. when mechanic so-and-so worked on *Bob’s* bike to give it a smidge more to end… To get the “best” results - whatever those might well be - the tube needs to be of fairly large bore, and the correct length; the reservoir needs to be as close to a sphere as possible, and of the correct volume; and the connection to the intake port needs to be as close to the descending piston in the intake port as can readily be achieved. If a reed valve is used, then it needs to be on the carb side of the reed block, and as close to the back sides of the reed cage as can be managed.

So in the end, you realized that properly tuning your engine is a much better solution than a boost bottle? huh.
@badbadbob1
@badbadbob1 3 жыл бұрын
Great video. I know a little about the bike motor and how it pulls the fuel from the carburetor into the sump of the motor when the piston goes up, the crank shaft then get compressed by the downward movement of the piston. As the piston travels up again it release the pressure up and into the cylinder for the compression stroke before the spark turns the gasses into the power stroke. So you have constant pressure then vacuum faster than a fly flaps it wings for lift. In doing so, the gasses can vomit back out the intake as well as suck back from the exhaust. Hence having a tuned exhaust gives just the right amount of back flow restriction, in turn the flow of vapers stops fluxing as violently, So the boost bottle is thought to take up some of the fluxing or vomiting back fuel as well. I believe for a boost bottle to work. You need a diaphragm inside the bottle to throw the vomit of fuel back. Aaa the missing link to the boost bottle. Try this if you can find one. a soft rubber ball you can crush flat in your fingers, It must fit the boost bottle. This might give the bounce back the bottle needs. Good luck.
@badbadbob1
@badbadbob1 3 жыл бұрын
@@supersportryder I said"pulls the fuel from the carburetor into the sump of the motor, when the piston goes up. How did you get confused? Remember the two side ports and front ports make the pressure build because of the crank pressure. This is why, "When a crank seal goes out. A motor can not pull a vacuum." if you have no vacuum, then no suction across the jets in the carburetor. As for the boost bottle. It is missing a key part. How you going to get a racket from a rubber ball?

I've been around hocus pocus products... this one takes the cake LOL. Huge companies like yamaha tried making it work a long time ago, and they found that these resonant bottles won't do much at all and for the production to be viable it has to make some margin of increase. Instead... they found it to be a fool's gold. Thanks for making this video. I know it's been a while, but I just built my first bike a few days ago, so I'm watching everything I can. Anyway, I JUST saw that "squeezed the tube" video like 10 min ago. Might be my first motorized bicycle build, but far from my first motor, and I KNOW that the positive effects of an intake booster - on a motor this small - would be so negligible that you would need technical equipment (and very precise tuning) to find it. At most - slightly improved MPG and barely cleaner emitions - NO performance gain. I seem to get the most useful, or worthwhile, tweaks from your videos. If I find a good idea somewhere else, it's usually something I've already heard from you. Thanks for all the work and good info.

I like your last name........I sure wouldn't buy a boost bottle but would try a free DIY one. I just watched the Thunderhead video, he said it #1 used less fuel to idle/ Increased MPGs #2 gave him a couple mph extra top speed. I think on the right setup with the right intake,(not have the hose fitting down inside blocking the intake airflow) it could help but just switching to a reed would most likely be a better overall improvement. They probably did work on old dirt bikes since they were tested by engineers & came stock on bikes. They were probably discontinued due to a better design engine/carb/intake,etc...

Model airplane engines and 2 cycle motorcycles use similar principals in their design the difference is that crankcase volume and shape produces the pumping effect to move fuel/air into the cylinder. I think boost bottles went away because engine designers got better at the volumetric flow design. The only thing i have ever see a boost bottle is improve idle and they are far larger than a co2 cartridge. . The boost bottle set up on these bike engines won't work for a specific reason. In order for a boost bottle to work the intake and exhaust gas pulse have to be matched. The exhaust volume is far larger than the intake. Look at a tuned pipe exhaust. Have you ever wondered why it is so big. That is why tuned pipes are used on higher performance engines. 2 cycle engines have to have back pressure to have a good power band. The exhaust pulse heads back to the exhaust port as well as leaving the pipe.That return flow holds more of the incoming intake charge of air/fuel in the cylinder. That is called scavenging. Now if you attach a hose to an intake you have a vacuum source. That bottle becomes a vacuum tank. I saw in the video the guy pinch the line and it dies. I think there is a vacuum leak and a very rich mixture. If you cut down air flow by pinching the line you just choked the engine.That is why it died. By adding that line you just made the intake volume bigger, now that will give you a lean mix unless you richen the carb mixture. That part is closed off but not the rest of the intake But it is dead space. You now have the volumetric equivalent of a hotdog in a hallway. I think everybody needs to stop hyper focusing on the boost part of the power process. This is a cheap Chinese engine Not a Celica GT engine! The best gains to be had is by cleaning up the ports and making sure the intake pipe has a good seal, look to see if the pipe is aligned with the intake port . My engine was off by intake pipe was mounted 1/8 of a inch So i got lousy airflow and a perpetual lean condition. The factory pipe is pretty good but if you want it better get a tuned pipe exhaust. Put a nkg spark plug on it and Get a real ignition wire and install it on the coil.It will run much better. My dad had a old mechanic that worked on his cars used to say keep it simple cause if you are fixing it all the time it is as worthless as a turd in a bucket of hammers. He is right. Make it dependable and you will have more fun. These are my thoughts on this subject.

The only analogy application of anything I know that anywhere close to a boost bottle is on a vortex Chevy. The intake tube has a bulb designed into it, but if you look at the opening to that void to the intake is as big as the tube itself. So a hose isn't going to transfer or balance any pulse happening in that area. Even Chevy guys toss that and K&N it, which doesn't have a boost chamber void thingy. Snake Oil 😆

Great video, very much appreciated! Hope you read this and help me understand something. I built my first bike, lots of fun and all that. Have a 44 tooth sprocket and an HP carb...but can only get to 22 p Mph best speed. HP carb only has 1 screw for idle( I'm assuming) so should I focus on a larger carb jet? Appreciate any advice, thank you!
@LAHover
@LAHover Жыл бұрын
Thanks. The carb could be affecting performance, but there are many other things on a build that can effect it as well. An NT Speed carb will easily get my 210lb butt up to 45 MPH. So I imagine the HP carb could do about the same with the right jet...

Never heard of a boost bottle until I got into motorized bikes, I was a dirt bike and 2stroke Kart racer and never saw anything in my time, now that was back in the early eighties to mid nineties

1st off did you start the 20ml test with an empty carburetor? As the 2nd half of the test the carb was empty and you put in 20 ml that 20 ml had to fill the bowl and line that was full on the first part? Do you understand me? Boost booths work by smooth out the pulse on a piston port. Thus leaning out the mixture. Did you notice less fuel puddling in the air filter? I did. I went from a 55 jet in my sha to a 62. But it got better mpg.

Think water hammer. Most water pipes in code have hammer arresters. Those have pipes reaching them the same size as the pipe. You'd need an actual tee. Just making your intake longer would do the same thing. If those work, then your intake needs rework. Just use a reed valve. Same thing. Keeps it in the crankcase.

Does it act like a reed valve sorta? Helps you increase speed at begining and then it keeps going normally?

I ran a boost bottle stock NT carb and it ran fine rode the hell out of it. But way it works most 2 strokes on compression will spray out fuel and air mix out thru the air intake. Boost bottle catches the fuel and air mix and puts it in on the next cycle

That thing that gets me thinking is, how do we even know that they fill those bottles with nitrous oxide from the factory? I noticed in your video that the "boost fuel" flowing through the clear tube was a liquid. Nitrous oxide by nature is actually a gas. The only time it is in liquid form is when it is mixed with gasoline, called a wet trigger system, which you didn't have on this setup. I greatly appreciate this video! You have definitely changed my mind. I almost bought a boost kit for $100!!!!! Thank you so much!

Originally boost bottles were empty chambers that used resonation. It's beyond my knowledge, but they have to be designed and tuned for the motor. This one is not.

You are creating an unnecessarily strong turbulent flow in the intake manifold with that which definitively affects the combustion enough to lose a mph. The problem is clear when you know about how important it is for the vaporized mixture to enter and exit the chamber without facing any obstacles in the way.

Oh god boost bottles for me have been a vacuum leak nightmare. I tried one and got a super rich fuel mixture, ran good at lower to mid rpm but it wouldn’t wind out :/. I tried different jetting as well with the stock carb. If the stock carbs had a fuel mixture screw. or if the bikes came with a more complex carburetor. I’m sure someone could get them to work better than us average joes. I found that a richer jet works good for high end with the boost bottle but it won’t idle well (fouls plug). Edit: I didn’t notice much fuel efficiency difference with my tests. Just a weird power band

From what ive seen, boost bottles just help with back pressure on two strokes by creating a consistent vacuum. So it wont really do much past about half throttle. And i believe reed valves do the same thing, but alot better, making them pointless.

oh this, yeah, its used for Nos injection kit (go kart) Amazon. Handlebar trigger to manifold and thats the boost. Toss the bottle and use the line for the Nos for quick boost. Bottle use needs to go to crankcase not in manifold. You might as well soak all your old carb filters in gas and stuff it inside boost bottle(BBR BOOST bottle has cap that unscrews on both ends with o-ring seal... beautiful CNC work btw..) anyway, and use fumes...of anything....fart into it...get a genuine temp boost....but if you do that put a valve on manifold...to nullify system if you cant collect another use for bottle: make a fuel reservoir including the old supercub petcock with a reserve(Fuel Gas Petcock Replacement for Honda CRF 250 450 X 250X 450X Petrol Valve #H64) Idk -_- heres a joke: WHAT KIND OF TEA IS HARD TO SWALLOW? With that rationale & I don't know how familiar you are with car stereos but back in the day line drivers were big! And now you don't really see them but they still work! Yet everyone knows about amps but you almost never see line drivers! They boost line voltage coming from the head piece(radio) before getting to the amp! Boosting from an average of 2 volts, up to 7 or even 14 volts which makes a massive improvement! But yeah with that rationale ,well, yeah! All that said, I've wondered about const bottles myself and I remember that vidio that you mentioned!
