Thank you for cranking out the great content. Years ago I read through that crazy long thread on one of the coffee forums regarding the aeropress where the inventor kept claiming he was getting crema and that it was espresso (they finally kicked him off). I can't believe how hard you had to push for the extraction to get a decent reading. Kudos to you for trying this "hack" and actually getting what I would consider a real shot out of that setup. Keep up the great work!

I guess the metal screen you inserted is the culprit for allowing water to spill out while pressing. I did cut the outer circle of the same metal filter you used, so it fits inside the basket, instead of on top, this seals it totally off. It withstands 3 bar when using my whole body weight and even 9 bar of pressure when using my Co2 Aeropress mod.
@LanceHedrick

Oh soo cool! Good idea. And I figured that was the culprit. Youre using the same screen? We need to be friends. Great minds... lol

Thanks so much for the review @Lance! Glad to see you measured the TDS and liked the taste I have a few comments and clarifications, not to change anyone's mind but to help get a better shot if nothing else. 1. Joepresso comes with a pressurised basket, the non pressurised baskets are available separately. You get more crema with a pressurised basket. 2. Water leakage you are seeing is because you're using the aftermarket screen on top of the gasket. You can also use a paper filter under the provided shower screen or instead of the one you used. 3. Shower screen is mainly used to keep the grinds in place, not to disperse the water. In an espresso machine water is coming from a thin pipe, here the AeroPress provides an even water column. If we don't use anything to keep the grinds confined to the basket you'll get immersion brewing instead of perculation.
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick 2 жыл бұрын
1. Pressurized isn't make more crema. It is a faux crema, more of a foam. 2. Yes. I am aware the water leakage is due to the screen on top of the gasket making incomplete the seal. 3. I'm also aware of the last part, but it was a poor design for the screen, as I noted. Could've been an easy fix for the screen to make it match the diameter of the basket, like the flair pro 2

I used the Joepresso, it's OK, but my recipe below is better and the workflow about 3 times faster! My recipe; - Aeropress with Aeropress pressure/espresso head , metal filter and paper filter (under metal) - 15gms Kirkland espresso coffee very finely ground (conical burr) - load coffee and tamp down hard (I use a SS Sauerkraut/Kimchee Pounder Tamper that fits the Aeropress) - use 45gms water at 205F - pour water and start pressing immediately, push hard and when pressure breaks an even push all the way to the bottom That's it, makes a fabulous shot, add water to make a Aerocono to taste or milk for latte. it is not bitter and has a velvet like feel that has a butter flavor, yep butter, that's how I taste it. Note(s) - this takes a lot of force, if you use more coffee it might be impossible to push. - fine grinds go through the metal filter, the paper fixes this and the metal keeps the paper in the basket, I use the paper for ~6-8 shots before replacing. - this leaves a dry hard puck that just pops out in the trash.

@1:04 I wish the technical name for the baskets would be: Deep boy, Shallow boy, and Pressurized boy... lol As always, great stuff, Lance! I appreciate your candidness at the beginning regarding the puck screen. On that note, I've seen an increasing amount of puck screens make their way into videos, obviously stemming from Flair using them. Has someone done the research or is there research about the effectiveness of those screens across the spectrum on espresso machines? I have found them to be helpful at times, but are they one the level of being a tool that would be added to your "3 tools to improve your espresso?" Just curious 🤷🏼‍♂ Once again, thanks for the top-notch content!

My JoePresso came with only pressurized basket. Additionally, their shower screen is kind of useless. With those things I mostly have a hard time to make a perfect cup of espresso. So I ordered a 51mm non pressurized basket, a mesh puck screen and a real tamper. Now this set become my go to for my everyday iced latte. I didn't turn on my espresso machine for a month now hahaha.

I’ve experimented a lot with AeroPress to get it closer to espresso without too much effort, however the biggest issue I found out with all of these contraptions is that the rubber tip of the pump does not have a good enough seal for high pressure maneuvers. While you were able to press pretty hard and level this time, AeroPress can explode its contents easily if you are not level or if something gets in the way of the rubber tip’s path causing the seal to break and having yourself and kitchen covered in coffee grinds. Not a fun experience. Happened to me multiple times using different methods. After that I just stuck to a normal method (close to James Hoffman’s) until I bought an espresso machine.
@mikkisdiyobsessions3742
@mikkisdiyobsessions3742 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure when you ended your experiments, but the latest Aeropress plunger seals are not so much based on rubber, but silicone and they tend to last quite long, even for espresso style higher pressures. Maybe worth picking up your experiments!

Things I’ve tried: 1. Used 3D printed tamper to compress the puck in AeroPress. 2. Used a regular filter on top of the puck to keep the puck intact. 3. Tried Fellow attachment to generate pressure with different methods. 4. Tried many other methods found online…. Results: coffee flavour is worse than a more traditional recipe OR I get an explosion of scolding hot coffee grinds in my face. 😂

Could you clarify why one would want to do "filter 2.0" with an aeropress? My vague understanding was that this particular approach was a neat hack for Decent owners to achieve something close to filter coffee with their magic machine. I don't have a Decent (way beyond my budget), so I didn't dig deeper, and maybe that's why I'm confused. But if you do have an aeropress, you actually have a device for easy filter coffee! So why go through all these extra steps?
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick 2 жыл бұрын
Because filter 2.0 tastes is really good. And not everyone can afford a Decent to try it. So, it is a way for people without a spare $4000 to make the same high extraction cup. It provides a MUCH different cup than just filter. Same body but with punchy acidity and insane sweetness. I've never had an aeropress recipe give me a cup that is anywhere near it. In fact, I don't ever touch the AP because I don't like the cups it produces.

would be curious to see if the aeropress was filled with more water. the compression of air wastes a lot of energy that could be directed to the water pressure through the coffee. of course it would be very difficult to have no air but maybe as little as possible would help. air is like a spring which gets much stronger the harder you press as hence the need to bleed the brakelines on your car if there's a bubble.

would be even neater if there was a syringe with a one-way valve in the centre of the aeropress plunger so you could pull out all the air during pre-infusion. still won't be "espresso" but id be curios to see the results. might even try it myself :) great vid btw

Do we even need a shower screen here? I mean in espresso machines we need, because a pump pushes the water into the chamber in a small tube. But that doesn't happen here, it's just the full water column on the puck. So I'm not sure they do anything than increasing the possibility for channeling. The only issue I see is maybe when you fill up the chamber the puck can be destroyed. But even then a melodrip or something similar would be a better solution.
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Love the observation, but I would have to disagree heartily. Instead of relying on speculation, though, i'll bring up a real world example- the Flair 58. Without the use of the puck screen as a further device to disperse the water during the pressurization of the water through the puck, you get horrible channeling because the water screen that comes stock tends to shoot water through the center. The extra dispersion is needed to stave off any massive holes in the middle of the puck. Same goes here. EVen with a Melodrip, you will have massive holes that will form from the water dropping and you will have less control over the water column going through the puck. the screen allows for controlled percolation.
2 жыл бұрын
@@LanceHedrick Thank you, I now see my error! You would somehow need to "tamp down" the puck after filling it with water... which is not really possible.

@@mikkisdiyobsessions3742 that sounds risky. The slightest unevenness on the cup or a drop of water could send it edge ways. Not to mention that repeated application of such force could start causing issues at any point, and any microcrack would make it explode. No, if I were to go this route (I don't know why anyone would tbh, when something like the picopresso is readily available) I'd modify a cheap drill press to hold the main body and apply controlled vertical pressure.

I don't understand why there's a obsession with converting the AP into an espresso device. There are plenty of options to craft espresso and after trying different manual devices I can say the only way to get espresso is getting an espresso machine, so it's better to save some money and make the investment if you want to get really into espresso. Hey Nicolás! Sure. It is always ideal to use an espresso machine for espresso. It is also ideal for people making ice cream at home to use an ice cream machine. But both of those machines are prohibitively expensive for lots of people and just saving money isn't necessarily realistic for a big portion of the population. So, with both of these, people find ways to recreate a similar outcome without having to shell out loads of dollars. I'm just trying to make this awesome hobby accessible to all!
