I was a Crew Chief on the F-16 for many years with the ANG. I can remember many extremely cold mornings at "O-dark-thirty" servicing LOX on all of the fliers. If you had time you would then service the non-fliers because if you let the oxygen system go to zero pressure a LOX system purge was required. With only a 9 liter capacity this task had to be accomplish about every other day. I had the pleasure later in my career to work with OBOGS equipped aircraft both Block 52 and 60. You mention the savings in support equipment with OBOGS but there was also a substantial savings in man hours for us Crew Dogs. Respect Sir and remember to check your 6!

I really love your channel, brother! Have you ever flown out of Smyrna, Tennessee? We’re spoiled here with air shows every time year or two going back to the 70’s when almost the entire focus of the airport was military, although it’s still an active Army base that had a Cobra squadron up until a few years ago. I grew up watching the air shows when Phantoms were the standard and a Harrier or F-117 Nighthawk were still such new technology it was borderline magical like the F-35’s are performing now with most the kinks worked out. We had the F-35, F-18 Super Hornet/Rhino, and Navy Growler demonstration teams on top of the Thunderbirds so it was an absolutely epic extended weekend for us air fanatics between practices and the shows. It’s at the top of my bucket list to get a ride in a fighter before I kick the bucket. 🤞

The positive pressure breathing systems were researched by Col Forrest Bird beginning during WWII. I met the man in 1995 and he told me a lot of stories about his research. Brilliant and down to earth guy.

You're so lucky to see them regularly. I used to live in Phoenix back around 03-04 when my dad was an f-16 instructor there, but there were definitely no F-35s yet! It was cool seeing all the jets up close on the flightline tho, and seeing those afterburners during nightflights 😋

I wonder why dont they integrate something like a pulseoximeter in the pilot's gloves, so they can measure that oxygen levels automatically, then push more O2 as needed ?

I was in Admin. But worked with the Sgt that scheduled training. I got to experience the Altitude Chamber once. Pretty cool. And a little intimidating as well. We worked our way up to a simulated FL800. The oxygen is very strongly forced into your mouth thru your mask. I don't remember much about what happened when we thru the taking off your mask procedure.

I was AAR with the F-18 in DCS and I started to get double vision. I thought something was going on with my VR headset. It was a Hypoxia effect in the game. I forgot to turn the Oxygen switch on. Soon as I turned it on my vision cleared up. Amazing game.

Question: When you have to fly an F-16 from the US to the UK, how many mid air refuses, and how do you relieve yourself. I've seen a device for Cesna pilots. A plastic boy with a tube, but I'm not sure that would fit on a fighter.

The clip of the hypoxia demo in the chamber... I was inside that day as an instructor, just out of view! Small world. That clip was from the Columbus AFB Physiology unit. The instructor lecturing, I'm still good friends with. That was back in the day when we would let one UPT student go off O2 at FL350. Very rapid onset of hypoxia at that altitude, TUC about a minute. AF eventually stopped those higher altitude hypoxia demos, and now everyone goes off at FL250 or is using ROBD. Great times, now I do the same work at NASA in Houston. Great video and explanations Hasard, appreciate your channel.

Small world! When was it? I wasn't going to push it--you don't want to be an example for future generations of pilots. I've never been back, we do ROBD now. Would love to check it out again though

@@HasardLee That chamber hypoxia video was from circa 1997 - 2003. I retired out of CAFB and went straight to NASA. Loved pushing students through, and back then we had the parasail program also. Heard they finally dropped that program. And when that video was taken, all UPT students would have 2 chamber flights. One flight to FL350. And a bit later in the phyz portion one up to FL430. That was a gut buster, gas expansion approx. 9 times ground level, ugh. Well, appreciate all your videos. Signed....former Aerospace Physiology Instructor, MSgt retired!
