I have always been fascinated by the US-Mexican Border. I wanted to see what the lives were like for the people living there, whether they be permanent or transitory residents. I wanted to see the border up close, to see where it ended at the sea and the Peace Park where Americans and Mexicans were allowed to mingle before terrorist attacks forced the USA to tighten their security.
Massive thanks to Patricia Junior and Patricia Senior for providing me with accommodation and showing me around.
Big thanks to Nil and Pablo for sharing their stories.
Thank you to ASMERG Tours Mexicali.
Thank you to Luis at Restaurante El Museo and the staff at Paris Hostel.
Mil gracias a todos los Mexicanos por su hospitalidad! ❤️

One of your best so far Matt, imho. A smorgasbord of shots has been superbly edited to produce a great viewing experience. It's full of contrasts from the dry salt lake to the ocean, the oppressive heat to the freezing water, the relaxed Mexicali to the vibrant Tijuana. The wall paints a bizarre barrier for migrants willing to risk all in search of the American dream, yet only a few weeks ago your adventure touched on the Skid Row and Tenderloin districts, enough to shatter all hope for a better life. Over 100 miles, add some mariachi, a speedy Caesar salad and a few interchanges including the youthful Pablo and the two Patties, there was a lot to condense into half an hour! I'm only too grateful you're sharing this journey. Cheers mate. 🤩

Really interesting and informative, Matt. I know very little about Mexico, so feel I've learnt a lot through this video. It really feels like a foreign country, rather than USA which has some similarities with UK. Love the desert shots! So otherworldly! So I'm learning about the world through your films. I've only been to the park today... on the plus side the trees here are beautiful at the moment... because of the CONSTANT 24/7 NEVER-ENDING RAIN. Enjoy the sunshine!

Hi Matt. What an amazing experience ! Many viewers must have been very interested in the border area between the United States and Mexico. It's a place that many people don't go on regular trips, so the life here and the interviews were very impressive. You fit in very well with this city 😁 Thanks for nice sharing. Hi Matt! I quite enjoyed seeing the start of your journey in Mexico. That tour was quite fascinating - I had no idea about the Chinese in Mexico. It really is an interesting region as most people around here just travel to the resorts along the coasts. Great work showing all aspects of the area, not just the pretty tourist spots, but I think you might be a little harsh on the Hostel California! It's a cheerful yellow at least! It looks like a great adventure so far. You even have your own personal tour guide. I’ve been to Tijuana before. It was a long time ago but there was nobody checking ID’s either. We just walked across through a one way turnstile. On the way back to the US they definitely checked to make sure we weren’t illegal. I’m not a fan of tequila or rattlesnakes so I’d pass. I would try the Caesar salad. It’s my favorite kind. Really nice ending with some words of wisdom. Well done. 👍

Hi Matt, this was a very well-presented and edited video. The illusion of water in the salt lake was fascinating. Mexican beer is very good. Great photos of Charlie Chaplin and Al Capone and the stories behind them. Several Americans travel to Mexico for dental work as it's much cheaper than in the States. Pablo was very interesting to listen to. I hadn't realized that Russians were among the many trying to cross the border. We have walked across the border in Nogales a couple of times. It is south of Tucson. We go to a nice restaurant for lunch and then cross back again. As soon as you cross you know you're in a different country. Nogales is split in two: half in America and half in Mexico. Thanks for a brilliant video. Stay safe ❤

Thanks Julie & Lucy! I was surprised to see so many Russians there as well. Neil told me that there is never any issue if he meets a Ukranian, they understand that war is declared by the governments and its the people that suffer. Nogales sounds interesting. I would be crossing all the time for quesadillas and carne asada 😆

It really is a fascinating part of the world for good and bad reasons. Great work documenting your experience - excellent choice of music too, got me into a latina vibe! Like you, I'd have never guessed how big the "wall" was. How long did it take you to cross the border? Patti seemed lovely, and was an amazing host! Considering Mexicali is a border town, would have thought it would be a bit more built up like Tijuana. Rattlesnake tequila sounds incredibly outrageous, but fair play for trying!

Really interesting section of your journey. Those desolate dusty landscapes look great to explore. What a difference a border makes! The Mexican towns as you present them look really less than attractive destinations. Even Tijuana looks uninspiring although you did find some good eats and hospitality. I have driven the US side of the border a few times mainly down from Yuma to San Diego and even though the Imperial Valley, south of the Salton Sea, has much irrigated green farmlands and quiet dusty towns it does not have the feeling of desolation that seemed to pervade to Mexican side of the border. From a distance it appears to me that a lot of Mexico`s problems stem from the consumption of drugs in the richer countries like the US and in Europe that fund those criminal cartels who in turn make civil society so difficult to maintain. The Mexican people are so warm and friendly and it was so good to see into their lives and witness their hospitality. We have always found people all over the world so friendly and hospitable especially away from the main touristed areas. In fact the less people have the more inclined they are to share with others. As for the Border Wall we seem only able to want to tackle results of problems rather than causes. Until the causes of the desire to migrate are resolved then that migration will only continue. Me first solves nothing. Best wishes and thanks for the interesting content.

The border towns here (apart from perhaps Tecate) certainly aren't tourist destinations, I don't think I saw any Americans at all in Mexicali. Along the coast it is very different to inland in Mexico too, the drive from Tijuana to Ensenada is very green. Inland, dusty desert and blazing sun. The problems are certainly mainly the cause of drug consumption and illegal immigration and desperate people are easy prey for the cartels. I totally agree, the Mexican folk I have encountered in the last 2 months have been very hospitable and friendly and keen to show me the best of their country. Glad you enjoyed the video!
