THe obviously genteel town of Wimbledon (home of tennis) also had a stadium that would triple up as a greyhound track, speedway track and banger/stock car track. It was the best. Also the stock cars raced in a figure of 8. It was beautiful. Just to make it clear the three sports didn't happen on the same night.

Jesus. This brings back so many childhood memories. My uncle was nuts for this stuff & took me to see bangers & stock cars at Long Eaton in the 70s whenever I went to stay with him in Derby. You can imagine how a 9 year old would have loved this stuff. Later on it was speedway as I lived half a mile from our local track. Later still as an adult in the mid 80s it was speedway again at Wimbledon when I had a girlfriend who lived there & she was into it too. To this day they are the only motorsports I can be arsed with. Everything else after starting with bangers, stocks & speedway just seemed like going round & round slowly in circles, especially on TV. 2 hours watching an F1 race? No chance. I'd fall asleep.

Standard stuff in the UK. A LOT of metal is welded in around the driver. Lots of inspections of this work goes on. Injuries happen yes, but in 60 years of this, the deaths column still has a 0.

Banger Racing - normally 8-12 laps of normal racing, although many don’t bother with the racing and just smash into one another. Lots of team events. Roll cages are a must and head ons not allowed. It’s as fun watching them clear up and try to drive their cars out as much as it is for them racing!

The cars towing a caravan and the 3 wheelers are the best.

The difference between Banger racing and US demo derby is that in banger racing they are actually racing which is why the cars are going a lot faster than they would be in a US demo derby (where they do everything to keep the speed down including watering the track). Banger racing is normally on UK stock car tracks, in fact the bangers actually started as a support act for stock car racing but became so popular they became the main event in some locations.

Banger Racing is one that's close to my heart. My dad and my grandad have raced bangers before. Been watching the sport for 20 years and will continue to watch it. Banger Racing is where you do 8 - 15 lap races and the first across the line is the winner of the race however the drivers can hit as hard as they want and can get themselves entertainer points which benefits the driver because they get more chance of getting into the World Championship and they also become a massive fan favourite for getting involved . If they is one car left running in the race they are declared the winner or on a rare accession their is a dead heat because no one is running. We do ussally hold a Destruction Derby at the end of the meeting too. Although not visible from a quick glance all drivers have a roll cage and a big door bar on the drivers side to make sure they are safe. Banger Racing also has different Meetings for different cars and styles. Such as Big Van Bangers (Vans/Buses/Ambulance), Micro Bangers (Small Vehicles), Unlimited Bangers (Anything you want that is reasonable) Team Meetings and many more. The clockwise footage is from the UK, the anti-clockwise is mostly from the Netherlands or Belgium. Few rules exist. A full roll cage/survival cell for the driver and no hits on the driver side door. Furthermore, yes, it's racing though at the end of the meeting it's usually followed by a full on demo derby where the last driver wins.

Hello lads..this is the real macoy.. racing flat out all night and you finish in a death destruction derby at the end of the meeting.. its a lot safer than it looks...i must admit I've got a bad back from years of racing bangers..my son is the man now he's out in van bangers on the 30th.of December...you would be within 100 miles of a track racing bangers anywhere in the UK every weekend...glad you appreciate it...kind regards dave😊😊😊😊

This is one of the few sports leeft in the UK that health and safety hasnt ruined, this is pretty much as pure form a sport racing you can get [aside the role cages and on standby ambulances]. Wreckfest is a perfect example of the rules of the sport :D

Believe it or not, they are actually racing. Hence the much higher speeds compared with the destruction derbys in the USA. The first across the finish line after a certain amount of laps is the winner. I used to be a regular spectator but all of the tracks near me have closed down. The demand for land in London for housing is so much more important, apparently. Spedeworth banger racing is one of the best nights out you can have fully clothed. Its amazing.The burgers are pretty good too. A typical event will have full contact bangers (as shown) and two or three other classes. BriSCA F1 stock cars. V8 stock cars, 2.0 hot rods are always awesome to watch but bangers are everyone's favourite.

I used to go to watch banger racing many years ago at Wimbledon stadium. It was hysterical. And yes, confirming rules from last comment.....no hitting drivers door (right hand drive). There are safety rules. You must have a safety cage, no glass in the car. The original fuel tank is replaced with a tiny one. Sometimes at the end, any cars left running can do a roll over contest. They set up a ramp and the idea is to hit the ramp with only one side of the car to make it roll. The car that rolls the most times wins.

It's nothing like demo Derby at all, no 5mph backwards love taps on mud here

Back when I was a kid we had a family friend who actually did Banger Racing and he would always invite us along and it was epic!! One of my best memories of it is standing out of the sunroof of my Dads Ford Cortina (an awesome car) watching the carnage unfold. Also, my first car went out in style after I sold it to a guy that does this.

I knew a guy spent months fixing his banger just for one race and if he couldn't fix it, he'd buy another one and start again. It was a hobby that had an end point of destruction.

From what I can make out, this is the real working class motor sport, because the cost of entry is just to get some old 2nd hand car ("an old banger") and get it to run, and put in a roll cage and racing seat with a harness. A few thousand quid each time, competing for about the same amount in prizes. Plus it's also a contact sport, but not one which requires you to run around in freezing rain and get covered in mud from head to toe.

The goal is to win the race. The demolition derby is last race of the day. Some of those cars will not be fit to race, but will some how appear on track for the DD.

I live four miles from a stockcar track,banger racing is still a popular event although never really shown in tv. Speedway (dirt oval motorbike racing) is also worth watching 🇬🇧

Banger racers are not allowed to hit the drivers side intentionally but drivers are protected by a a standard roll cage. They have a strengthened floor around drivers feet and a thick metal door plate across the drivers door only. Most of the drivers are in teams with a leader, drivers who run interference and a blocker(who is usually the one who is willing to destroy the competition by any means. The races are usually 20 laps and at the end of the evening after the final chequered flag the continue on to the derby( last car moving)

My son did this with his work mates. He said it was the best thing he has ever done lol Its quite popular in NZ, last man standing wins.

15 laps, fastest car to complete wins , your allowed to smash the opponents out your way, head ons allowed if on corner, no hits to the drivers door. Can go wrong way on corners if your going out for a crash. Last race of the day is called 'demo derby' last car running and moving wins

I grew up watching Bangers at the track in my village. It's a full-contact race of around 10-ish laps, first across the line wins. You'll find people form teams and paint the cars in the same colours. Teams will assign racers and crashers. racers try to go as fast as possible and crashers stop others from going fast. Others just crash for fun. A few clips in this video looked like revenge hits or hits to make sure the other driver is out of the race. for safety they must have a roll cage bolted in just behind the driver's seat, a thick steel plate along the driver's door and steel plating in the footwell. These bits of armour are all connected to form a rigid structure, that's why the crumpling stops just behind the driver. You'll also see a marshal checking to see if the driver gives a thumbs-up after being hit to show he is okay.

With a demolition derby it’s the last car standing, however there is one main rule you cannot hit the drivers side door apart from that you can hit as hard as you like wherever you like. In banger racing you also can’t hit the drivers side door they are 20lap races I believe first car to cross the finish line or the last car moving wins.

kids as young as 10 possibly younger do these races in minis, there are lots of different formulas both contact and non contact, from Chevy V8 powered BRISCA F1 home made cars for contact racing and National Hot Rods for non contact

As much as I love banger racing, it does pain me to see old cars getting smashed up. I spotted a Rover P5 in amongst all that, including lots of Volvo 200 and 700 series, Jag XJs, mk1 Ford Granadas and some yank tanks like 70s GM B-body colonade sedan (Pontiac Bonneville, say), 80s GM like a Caprice, 90s T-Bird.

I started racing on my 50th birthday and wish I'd done it 30 years earlier. On a race night you will normally have 3, 4 or 5 different formulas on. Each formula usually gets 3 or 4 heats. The last heat for bangers consists of any bangers still able to run and is normally a few laps then straight into the DD. In a normal race first car over the line after completing the prescribed number of laps wins. The last race as soon as the chequered flag is waved the green for the DD is waved and the carnage really begins. Last car moving wins the DD. Head ons are allowed and I've had a few myself. Drivers door hits are strictly off limits but accidents do happen. I've only had one on the drivers door, it was accidental as the other driver had no way of avoiding me but it is sore.

Used to do this in the 90's in Leicestershire.... fantastic fun 😊 All the cars are fitted with roll-cages with fuel tanks removed and replaced (usually with a re-used fire extinguisher for strength) and full harnesses and they are scrutinised for safety before every race. No hits are allowed on the drivers door other than that anything goes 👍

Banger racing is 15 to 16 laps round an oval track the idea is to stop the other cars with in the laps and still finish the race your self there are rules like no hitting in to the drivers door but apart from that anything goes really it’s a good fun sport i my self race bangers and I’ll I can say is that it’s a thrill of a lifetime but also dangerous

Banger racing is RACING guys, nothing whatsoever to do with a Demo Derby. I know it really doesn't look like it but it is. They are running laps and there is a race leader out there somewhere. The Bangers are the most unregulated of the Stock Car races over here. There are very few rules in the Bangers, pretty much anything goes, except driver door hits.. Some drivers are only out there to smash shit, some actually do try to finish and win. There is a lot of team rivalries too. I live quite near a stock car track and have watched loads of it, it is so much fun to watch, absolute automotive violence lol.

The point of banger racing is the same as any other motorsport… to win! Saying that there is teams out there that dont care about winning! The whole point for them is to see how f*cked up they can get their car and all the other cars! At the end of every meeting there is a DD or as you called it a destruction derby! And the point of that is simply last car running! In any way shape or form if your car is the only one left running then you have one! In terms of the crashes its not as bad as it looks! Ive had a couple of turns in a banger and its actually more fun than scary! And most likely if your car has been folded to what looks undriveble they just take it back to the pits and use the crane to pull the dents out and go again!
