If you are able to put so much money into the different savings pots then I would absolutely advise you to overpay on your mortgage even if it means dropping your Birthday fund for a few £ per person or to wait for the January sales for your Christmas tree, source some clothes very nearly new etc….you will get far more benefit from paying off your mortgage early than some of the other things - it’s a no brainer. I didn’t do it when I was young and I really regret it - even £50 a month could make a huge difference over the term of your mortgage Thank you for an interesting video, I love seeing these kinds of videos with breakdown of expenditure etc xx

I don't understand why long term married couples split bills. I used to with my husband and it just lead to resentment and issues. So now my salary pays all our bills, childcare and big expenses like car repairs and my husbands wages pay for food, petrol, stuff for our two children and treats like days out etc. Works for us and then whatever is left in either account at the end of the month goes into a joint savings account 😀 I don't see it as my money or his money, its our money as a family. We both work to provide for the family, not ourselves.

I definitely get where you’re coming from like my partner and I mostly join all our finances but I like to keep £500 or so to myself each month so I feel like I have a bit of independence with the money I earn! But I do get why people split bills for sure. My ex used to control all my finances when we had a joint account and it sucked! (Not saying that’s what would happen here obvs lol)

My husband and I earn about the same amout. He'll earn more than me some months through bonuses but I probably get slightly more overall. We have a joint account for the mortgage, childcare and household bills and put a set amount in it every month, but seems a bit pointless to put in the rest of our money when we'll get the same back.

Videos like this are great, the only thing I would say is that if it's not too invasive it would be great if someone did a household income tracker. Only because if one person in the relationship is earning £100k before tax it gives context to how critical it is for the other person to budget their £20k.... If that makes sense!

Hey hun love these vlogs I sorted my bills out following your yearly vlog. But I do agree on other comments that you are paying out other expenses like George’s clothes, xmas etc? Especially as your part time. I’m part time we decided my husband buys / pays most bills I pay some and rest is on a joint account for us to use for the month. Like paying for days out to play groups/ farm/ lunch / coffee etc to entertain my toddler for three days. Be good to see that budget too. Xx

Great thorough budget but seems so unfair on you? You work 4 days a week which reduces the childcare bill but yet you still contribute to it 50% along with all other expenses? Plus you use your car to take George to nursery so shouldn't this also be shared expense, at least to some extent? Also why is George's clothes in your individual budget, shouldn't that be in your joint expenses? Also as your pension will take a hit from you working part time, how is that redressed in your joint budgeting? It would be a great to hear how you manage pensions, especially with making up some of your income from being self-employed, have you got a SIPP? I feel like you contribute so much to your little family, not just financially but emotionally and domestically as a lone parent during the week. No wonder you have been feeling overwhelmed!
@lauraalice14

I’m in a similar position to Shan where I only work 4 days a week but we still split childcare 50/50. Personally it’s my choice to stay home one day and I get the benefit of spending more time with my daughter that my husband misses out on. That being said my husband and I are very open about our finances so if this meant I was struggling financially then we would balance that out 😊 It’s interesting to see how others balance child related costs! We have to remember we are only seeing one side from Shan and her husbands finances are private 😊

I think a lot of this is balanced out if her partner isn’t home often tho right, as in theory he’s paying half for utilities he isn’t using. Seems fair to me.

My husband and I have a joint account so we don't have to split anything , but if we did and if I could choose to work fewer hours to spend with our daughter , we would still split childcare 50/50 as me working less would be my choice , and my husband equally would love to be able to make that choice to work less. I think for budgeting purposes it makes sense too, I'm sure if Shan had any struggles they would adjust those percentages but she's definitely making some good money 😊

Hi Shan, sorry this is a very personal question - but with your paycheck income plus your Side Hustle income - this is just judging by what you get per month on here based on both salaries - wouldn't you be over the child benefit allowance of 50k a year? It might be different due to how your side hustle business money is set up? - Love your budget videos - they are always so interesting! :)

I think you need to have a chat with your husband... why is he letting you take out a loan on a car that you use to take his child to childcare in? And not paying for his child's petrol costs and clothes without contributing? Not to mention expecting you to financially contribute 50/50 when you are saving him money on childcare (not to mention all the lone parenting he expects you to do). Unless he earns significantly less than you, or had other reasonable outgoings- like child support for a child or children from another relationship then I think he needs to step up and not let you get into debt taking the brunt of financially supporting his son. I mean you spent so much money on a wedding to marry this guy, that you are left loaning money to meet basic transport costs for you and your son. That is not good budgeting advice! Why are married and those with children not sharing finances? You are a family, a joint interdependent unit, not two housemates! It seems to all fall to the woman, not just financially but domestically as well- you are doing almost everything! You are going to get burnt out if you are not careful!
