Book spoiler: even in the book, it is not clear how much goes on, but Kiku makes a point to walk back with Blackthorne to be seen with him, and she waits and salutes longer than she usually does, even for her best clients (Omi). Everybody is in awe at how good Blackthorne must have been to be seen off like a lover and not a client.

Main reason is obvious, Toranaga wants him to stay. Carrot and stick, the fact he could be killed at any moment due to a slight infraction in a foreign land if toranaga wants is the stick. But with the stick there must also be the carrot, and eventually hell forget all about england, particularly if hes in love with Mariko.

When Kiku moved to the side I was confused. Then I realized that when Anjin turned his head to listen to the translation, he could only see Mariko. As Kiku spoke, you could slowly no longer hear her and only hear Mariko's translation. Soon the words seemingly were coming only from Mariko... Perfection. Kiku knew exactly what she was doing

I don't think Toranaga ever believed Mariko was ever going to dishonor herself. On second viewing I feel that this guy was right and Toranaga sent Mariko as "translator" because he wanted Blackthorn to associate Mariko with all the carnal words and actions that Kiku was speaking. Like he knew this would pull on Blackstone's heart, but Mariko's honor would keep it from ever coming to physical fruition. So Toranaga now has Blackstone forever entombed to a foreign land where he lost the deepest relationship he has ever known. Toranaga knows he has his man forever and so did Mariko

That scene was crazy and uncomfortable. I would think as a married woman it would be forbidden for her to be there. Buntaro will hear about it and that's probably one of the reasons he wants to kill Blackthorne.

Toranaga's statement at the beginning of this video brought back something to me regarding Mariko in the original movie: For some reason unbeknownst to me, I got the sense that Mariko was or would be given the order to betray Blackthorn and kill him if something couldn't be resolved regarding him, his ship, and the Black ship. Of course, she couldn't do it, and I wouldn't be surprised if she sacrificed herself so that she wouldn't have to choose between Blackthorn and Toranaga. Consequently, when she died, it was either him or his ship and Toranaga chose the ship.

In the book a lot is left unsaid the pleasure is the writing is so clear and you are drawn in ,but not everything is explained in detail as to little children ,,this series has so strayed from the book from the episode where toronagas son tries to kill his half brother and dies, ,this series is its own Opus , I'm not really impressed, ,, SUPPORT UKRAINE FREE AND AT PEACE BEIR
