They say "cultural appropriation" More like "cultural appreciation" as in showing appreciation for another's culture and not trying to downgrade/speak ill of it.
@GrahamChapman4 жыл бұрын
Uhm, don't quite think you know exactly what "cultural appreciation" is... 'cuz, you know, that's an actual thing and specifically refers to honouring and respecting another culture and its practices as a way to gain knowledge and understanding of said culture. Playing the devil's advocate for a moment, I can understand parts of the "cultural appropriation" argument from the angle that some aspects of GoT are anachronistic. For example, haiku appearing hundreds of years before haiku was a thing, the Japanese armour sets being a bit of a mishmash between period-correct, boxy armour and more streamlined Sengoku period armour, Jin having a katana rather than a tachi despite the fact that the Mongols' armours and stuff was the very reasons why the katana's design was even invented (bit of a missed opportunity imo; there could've been a main quest line about Taka forging a proto-katana for Jin to make him more efficient at taking down Mongols) and Jin wearing a katana and wakizashi set tucked into his obi, edges up, which would not become vogue until the Tokugawa period... In summary, if you're a stickler for such details, I suppose you could argue some level of offence and appropriation based upon ignorance or historically incorrect representation... But then again, Sucker Punch have acknowledged most of these things and have made it quite clear that their main concern when making GoT was about making it "A Kurosawa Movie: The Game" and their love for the culture they wished to portray, and the amount of work they put into portraying it well, anachronism aside, shines through way more clearly than any unintentional offence they may cause. (Heck, the Mongol artefacts and stuff that even provide some educational information about the Mongols' culture kinda emphasizes how much research they put into the game.)

@@GrahamChapman It's still appreciation at the end of the day. Hell, considering how amazing it's doing in Japan I doubt they care about everything being one-to-one accurate. I would even say that they feel flattered as hell consider how much they've been gushing over it. Lol
@GrahamChapman4 жыл бұрын
@@imarock.7662 Well, yes, but also, no. I mean, expressions actually do mean different things. "Cultural appreciation" isn't just appreciating a culture, it's specifically about appreciating it from a pretty much academic or educational perspective. And I think it's fairly important to respect and uphold the definitions in these specific cases so as to not give actual appropriators any ground... Like, there are some people who do think they're just "appreciating" something from a culture when they're actually appropriating it. They're not doing it with any kinda malicious intents or anything like that, they're just a bit shallow and ignorant is all, but I think it's still important to encourage people to not satisfy with shallow or ignorant portrayals of certain parts of a culture that you just think is kinda neat/you "appreciate" the visual aesthetics or whatever. (All of this is, of course, not quite applicable to GoT since SuckerPunch did put the work in, but is more just an argument defending the importance of protecting our language so we don't end up disempowering certain expressions and stuff.) Yes, I've read about GoT's great reception and success in Japan, too. Toshihiro Nagoshi's praise for GoT in particular was nice to read about, (I recommend people to check it out,) because he also mentioned the fact that a lot of Western representations of Japan do tend to feel a bit off, but that GoT managed to pull off the mean feat of making Japan feel right to Japanese audiences... And that's basically what I'm talking about in the above paragraph, too: Even if you "appreciate" Japan and Japanese culture to the extent that you decide to make a movie/video game in a Japanese setting, it's still not guaranteed that the "Japan" you're portraying isn't a caricature based upon a shallow and/or ignorant image of what Japan and Japanese culture actually is like. Which is exactly why GoT is an unusually good game and you kinda gotta respect SP for the amount of research they put into the game to make it turn out as good as it did, the occasional anachronism and flaw like that notwithstanding.
@imarock.76624 жыл бұрын
@@GrahamChapman Ehhhh. I still think it's appreciation at the end of the day tbh. Also, if I'm keeping it a buck, I think the whole "cultural appropriation" thing is pretty silly, since so many who cry "CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!" do it over the most absurd things that aren't even cultural appropriation, like a certain hairstyle or clothing. Besides most people who do cry it, aren't even of the culture or race they're trying to "defend," and the ones who are don't even care. At least from what I've seen. Idk, I just think the "cultural appropriation" thing boils down to just people getting pissy over petty things. Like, I agree with some of what you're saying, especially the second paragraph in your second reply, but with some of the top stuff....ehhhhh. Just my two cents.

I think the issue of ppl saying he (Jin) is boring is cause the VA plays him that way. Very stoic. I'm playing in Japanese and the VA does the voice of Zorro (One Piece) and Mugen (Samurai Cuamploo). He sounds way cooler in Japanese cause he has way more energy. He plays up the character. Just switch to JPN and you can feel/hear the difference.
@DylnMatrix4 жыл бұрын
Daisuke really plays up the stoic and honorable samurai in the beginning act, but I've found him to really open up in Act II onwards, especially when interacting with the side cast, really shows the growth of Jin during his transition to the Ghost. Nakai does show great character all the way through though, I agree.
@izumolee67144 жыл бұрын
I think that was the point of Jin in the beginning. He is trying still to be that honorable samurai his Uncle raised him to be so he is very stoic & boring. However i feel that when he begins to adopt more of the Ghost mentality he opens up a lot more & shows much more emotion especially during the final duel which was very well done. And as some have said his interactions with the other side characters do lighten up his character.

Metroidsmashington I mean at the start anyhow that’s kinda the point because Jin starts out stiff with his family code of honor. But even then he has great moments to show that he’s not a complete stiff (him joking some with Ryuzo at the beginning of the game, Jin playing the flute for Masako when she tells him a family memeber would play music at night at a cliff side, him always treating his horse like his best friend even sleeping on him at times, etc.). I just feel as though Max and crew just never really bothered to try and look past Jin’s stoic demeanor to appreciate his character

Just because that never got one doesn't mean this won't smh
@TitanGT664 жыл бұрын
@@NirodimosNeedAKing Way to completely miss the point. Nobody cares that you platinumed Spider-Man. The whole point of new game plus in video games is to replay the game without having to grind as much as the first playthrough, and usually on the hardest difficulty that sometimes isn't unlocked until you beat the game once. Plenty of games do it differently. Look at Fallen Order which is similar to GoT in that there's no stats but only skill points . It's new game plus didn't give you skill points to make you start off stronger, but instead you started off with every cosmetic that you previously unlocked in the first playthrough, thus removing the time spent having to look for them again. You even got a new costume an added features. GoT can literally do the same thing. Even Arkham Knight has new game plus, so do you know how stupid you sound trying to bring up RPGS like Persona or Witcher when there's plenty of non-RPGS that have it? And saying "this is a sucker punch game" also doesn't mean anything, you really think they're gonna watch all of these people ask for New game + and just say "no we don't care about what fans want"? Just because they haven't done it before doesn't mean they'll never do it, how stupid can you be son lol. This game is way bigger than Infamous, obviously they're gonna wanna please the fans as much as they can. They literally just added a new difficulty and more accessibility options just yesterday. Also, Japanese Dub Jin is a much better character. Its unfortunate about the lipsync, i hope thats something that can be patched in, because the Japanese voice cast is top notch.

I've heard some of the English dub and thought it was good but I've played entirely in Japanese from the get-go and I gotta say that I really like Jin in Japanese. I've been trying to do basically everything and so far I've realized that a lot of his character seems to come out in the side quests but most of it I felt was very subtle. The questline with Yuriko really showcases that imo and so far it's one of my favorites.
@DeanRGG4 жыл бұрын
People keep complaining about the Japanese dub not lip syncing yet fail to realize all the characters share their likeness with their Asian-American voice actors The game is an American media built around Asian Americans as they speak English, much like how most Japanese media is built around their Japanese speaking actors. People are finally experiencing the reverse of what English dubs have to work around which is the lip sync not being catered towards the dub of another language Now, you could bring up how FF7 Remake utilized AI for artificial lip syncing of any language but that's a whole different situation especially as FF7R is the type of game where the mocap actors are different from the voice actors. Both of which are Japanese centric (despite having a star studded English dub cast it's a Japanese game so of course their VAs are the focus from a developmental perspective) unlike the western made Ghosts of Tsushima

@ 7:56 My thoughts exactly. RDR2 has sat collecting dust as I pass it to literally play anything else. SuckerPunch knows that a giant beautiful openworld means nothing if it isnt fun. ROCKSTAR was much too concerned with "Systems". A System used to punish you for killing too much. A System used for Horse maintenance. A System used for cleaning your weapon. Their over emphasis on Systems, took away from the mechanics in place. This game is literally what RDR2 should have been.

It's a "different strokes for different folks" kind of deal, because I absolutely loved those extra systems in RDR2. They made the experience a lot more authentic, giving me time to really get immersed. So should RDR2 have been like GoT? No, because it is its own unique experience and it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but that's okay. Some people have the patience for a game like RDR2, some people don't... It is what it is.

YoVideogames during the development of the game SP consulted with a Kenjutsu school called Tenshinryu Hyoho. While not a koryu themselves they do practice various forms of battojutsu that are derived from other schools that are. One basic sword technique you find in almost every school is called “Suriage” which involves parrying a vertical strike from below using either the Mune (back) or Shinogi (side) of the blade and immediate counter with a vertical strike of your own. In GoT this is what you get when you perfect parry resulting in an insta-kill. It’s impossible to say if such a technique was used during that era of samurai warfare, but often times the techniques that are the simplest are the ones that survive through hundreds of years of transmission.
@kingkerfuffle31734 жыл бұрын
That being said, the Katana as it is seen in the game would have been a different length, curvature, and was worn with mountings that positioned the blade edge pointing down. It wasn’t until around the 15th century that they started wearing them as the game portrays. Something they did get right, at least in spirit, was how completely unprepared the samurai were for the invasion of Komoda and of their misconceived notions of being able to engage the Mongols in one on one duels.

I think the RDR2 comparisons are not particularly justified as the studios had two completely different goals during the creation of both games. One is a Samurai Power Fantasy and the other is a Character Study with Book-like pacing. GOT has to play well to make sure the player is having fun at all times, getting into fights and clearing out bases, the side content is usually you completing an activity in minutes and moving on, I could not tell you a thing about 90% of the locations in this game, because it's mostly there as a playground to being a cool Samurai. Red Dead 2 is slower on purpose to make you take in the world around you more and the lack of easy fast travel is to open up the exploration, Red Dead 2 completely wrecks GOT in exploring because encounters are usually always unique (usually, not always) it makes you go "what's in the cabin?" Only to discover something crazy and unexpected that people still discuss today. GOT completely wrecks RDR2 in pure gameplay and how it looks, but RDR2 has an infinitely more interesting open world design and story that yes, has rough pacing but makes you more invested in these characters when things start to pick up towards the end. GOT has some great characters that I really felt invested by, but Jin Sakai is no Arthur Morgan. I completely understand why you guys prefer GOT, I do. I've been watching you guys for 10 years and honestly for the most part I go more for games like GOT over RDR2. But to say GOT is what RDR2 should have been is not a fair comparison when they aren't trying to be the same game.

Top 3 game of this year for me. The side missions can get pretty repetitive at times but this game is still really goddamn good

Renzythegreat91 what are your other 2 favorite games from this year so far? For me the best games this year are doom eternal, this game and resident evil 3 remake
@RenzyTheGreat4 жыл бұрын
jeremy roberts the other 2 games I’ve personally really enjoyed this year are FF7 Remake and this is kind of a controversial game but I really enjoyed Last of Us 2. I sometimes switch out between FF7 Remake and Doom Eternal in my top 3 though lol

Me: Man Jin is fuckin’ awesome! He’s willing to do anything for the island even if it means bemding and breaking his code, loves the FUCK outta his horse, played the flute for someone when they brought up some sad stuff with their family relating to it and also doesn’t take no shit from the Mongols or bandits and traitors. Max and crew: He’s a stick in the mud Me: ...okay But glad you’re enjoying the game dudes

Bushido was totally a bitch and very cold way of life, when Steve was mentioning that he didn't like Jin is where Im referencing. Character was totally made for that typical Samurai Code way of life, and if you don't know about the code I'd suggest reading into it to understand that way of life.

Some of Breath of The Wild's more extreme fans hated Jim Sterling for giving the game a 7 out of 10 (a good score), just think about the amount of hatred they hold for Steve the moment he made that comment,

I was gonna say man, the face captures in this game are the only thing that doesn’t measure up to the rest up the game. The only reason I can tolerate playing with Japanese audio is to put a mask on Jin. Otherwise, it’s just this HUGE elephant in the room.

This is why this game has an 80ish on metacritic. Cuz even the people who love it still try their damndest to downplay how good it is. They'll say "omg this game is fucking amazing" then they'll say "its okay, its good, not great, its average, not perfect" when describing every individual part of the game. It does the game a huge disservice.
@zerochill43264 жыл бұрын
I love all the micro transactions stuff the game has, over 100 different cosmetics for you and your sword all and the horse all for free....wait what?!
@mr.dickbuttboss88384 жыл бұрын
The dumbest take I've seen is someone saying the game is only "Alright" because it doesn't challenge ideologies or tackle politics. Like half way through the game, Jin was supposed to turn to the camera and say, "The only way to defeat Koutan Kahn is to destroy the Patriarchy..." wut?
@jonboyuchiha44214 жыл бұрын
I disagree that jin's character isn't good
@zerosolis66644 жыл бұрын
Same. It's all about perspective and I have been loving playing the game in Japanese. A lot of the humor and overall personalities of the characters comes across FAR better in the Japanese dub and even in things as small as tone of voice. The english cast of the game is also stellar, but people have to actually understand Jin's character to really judge it. It still has the slight humors of a kurosawa movie but at its heart it is a historical tale of the heir of clan Sakai (even though a Jin Sakai is a fictional character, the Sakai clan is real just like the rest), having to deal with the internal turmoil of being forced to set the very foundation of your life, all you've known aside for the sake of your home. It's honestly beautifully tragic and I'm not even done with act 1.

Trust me, Max. Weebs love this game, and don't care it was made in America. The people who are pissy about that are game journos who cry over the smallest things.
