RIGHT. See, I can do it too. But it doesn't do much in the way of support an argument, does it? Explain why it is too general? I think all unskilled/uneducated laborers that are competing with the kind of people who dont even speak english could unite over that kind of common interest.

We have that in Norway and yes, it works. The main organization works on national questions. While sub groups with their own structure and names and such work for different occupations. Its basically works like a giant military alliance. Of course people on the far right dont like it because they would have wanted the "UK alone to face off with Hitler". Because that is how you really win a war... /sarcasm

Neil DeGrasse Tyson just freakin rules!And the guy sitting beside him has some darn good insight. If people are doing well, they don't have much time for all the hate. And that goes against everything the one party has worked out for us so far. People who make going on 2 billion dollers a year telling people making minimum wage that they cost too much. BTW, the top two hedge fund managers make the equivalent of 3 hundred thousand minimum wage workers. If there is enough money for 2 single people to make as much money as 300,000 people, stop crying about 7.50 an hour being unaffordable. Instead of a few people makeing most of the money, it's sounder financial policy for as many people to be in the middle class as possible,

T`hing is he is a billionaire venture capitalist. He was the one who challenged the notion that the rich are the 'job creators' instead he said consumers are the job creators. The rich spend less of their income on goods than a person making minimum wage.

1) Your mentality does not address the issue of small businesses. If you tell smaller restaurant owners they have to double the pay of their workers in a sudden shocking pace, they definitely aren't going to be able to handle it as well as a corporation. 2) Another important issue that people of your opinion neglect to address is the issue of how skilled pay will affect the pace and standards of hiring. You all just assume companies and business owners are going to willingly give up the extra pay without swapping or compromising on something else. Corporations aren't dumb. Raising min. wage at THAT PACE will only encourage corporations and business owners to hire extremely experienced people, which means shutting teenagers and college students, and others with little work experience from min. wage jobs. Little ironic, don't cha think? The very same people wanting the raise will now hardly get hired. They'll now be hiring the guy who's been stocking shelves for 8 yrs. or the lady who's been handing out orders for 7 yrs. They won't just pay anybody $15/hr. Additionally the jobs will be nearly sweatshop work. One worker will be expected to do the work of 4 or 5 positions. Corporations aren't dumb. 3) Hedge fund managers work in the securities industry and have nothing to do with any industry or corporations paying minimum wage. 4) I have to admit this was and still is one of the issues I am not in lock-step and totally agreeing with Bernie Sanders on. I think everybody agrees that the min. wage needs to be raised, but to raise it at a pace where it's doubled in 3 yrs. is dangerous for small businesses across America and would probably send this country right back into recession. We need a REASONABLY PACED rise in min. wage. Maybe $15/hr. in 6 yrs. OR $12/hr. in 3 yrs., but not doubling it in 3 yrs. That's disastrous.
@ourhour

Dathotness4ya Why? If minimum wage since 30s had kept with rising productivity, it would now be about 22 dollars an hour. Or are you arguing that even its original size was too big? www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/18/elizabeth-warren-minimum-wage_n_2900984.html

So you are saying that the less money people have, the more they will spend? My wife was second in command of a small business, She was paid very very well, as were teh employees. The business thrived. If a business is so small that the only way they can stay in business is by paying minimum wage, then the invisible hand of the free market will take over, and weed out the inefficient small business. And tell me this threat that teh job creators pose every time about how people will lose their jobs because of getting a raise? Well, dear sir, people are not getting raises, and they are STILL losing their jobs. Your ideas simply do not work. Trickle down economics, give the job creators most of the money, and they shall provide for the common man. GIve it a break. The economic equation has two sides, producers and consumers. Your producer only model is old, worn out, doesn't work. Could you give the cited numbers on how increases in the minimum wage have been directly tied to recessions/depressions?

This is a fantastic dialogue. I was once a loyal Reagan Republican for most of my voting life, 5 years ago I left the Republican Party to be an Independent because I saw that BOTH parties were corrupted by money and power and neither seemed to speak to me or many of my friends who are Republicans but in denial. For me, it's not the size of the government that angers me, or the ridiculous notion that 'free market' means no regulations. You need rules in order to play the game of opportunity and growth. Any good business person knows this. My major complaint is the self-interest and manipulation of the voting public by both parties, and the television media as co-conspirator (not so much print media, but they have dumbed down) that makes me FURIOUS. There is plenty of everything for everyone here in America but the people need to demand better from our leaders. All of us, business owners, workers and government need to encourage the best from everyone, not just those that can afford it. When the tide rises, all boats lift. Think about it.

I agree, but on one condition: When Neil is scripted he is fantastic. But unfortunately, the price of him becoming such a good astrophysicist is that he does not seem to have the best of social skills. If you watch this whole episode, Neil very nearly ruined the whole show. Partially it was bills fault for being a little too jokingly dismissive and using the word nerd too much. But Neil was just bad at chilling the fuck out and laughing a bit. Also, I hope he felt like an ass, because while Bill did rib him a little bit, he actually was nicer and more accommodating and even protective on the whole to him than I have I think EVER seen him be to anyone on his show. He clearly knew that given the very politicized atmosphere in america right now that Neil would have nothing to talk about, so he prepared ahead of time to set up a bunch of opportunities to include him. Bill doesnt do that for anybody, but he went out of his way to do it for Neil. At the same time, I can see how someone who probably grew up a nerd and saw the cool kids like Bill making jokes as being derisive of him, kind of reverting a bit when he feels attacked. What also made me sad is how much of a know it all apparently he is. I had never noticed before, but once he got offended for a bit he kept trying to argue and pick a fight with Bill seemingly just to get back at him. That's some insecure petty nerd shit right there (trust me I've been one). Meanwhile, the entire time Bill was just trying to have a good time and take care of everybody (except that stupid heckler). I know Bill apologized afterwards for any part he played and probably smoothed things over, but I really hope Neil did too. Because Bill SHOULD have been more careful about Neil's feelings, but at the same time, it's a comedy show. Neil should know where he is and chill out and just enjoy the jokes. If you didn't get much of what I'm saying and you haven't seen the full show, its just because you haven't seen the full show. By the time Overtime came around Bill had already figured out how to fix the situation and show, and Neil I think kind of realized what he was doing and definitely got better. But there were some hints of it. But in the full show it got so awkward at one point that Eddie kind of alluded to Bill having really bad luck.

+Matt Bacon It was Bill's fault, not only is he dismissive he is also not funny and a chronic interrupter. Every time I watch Bill Maher I regret it, his jokes leave me flatly deflated. What Bill passes off as humor, is a mix of 80% stupid and offensive, 20% clever, 0% funny. By the time the clip was over I was frowning intensely, I just don't like Bill. As many times as I tried to laugh, his style makes me irritated. I don't think he is very kind, or bright.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson is one of my heros. I am an amateur astronomer and during the show when he talked about Saturn I have to agree. I didn't have a telescope but was at a friend's place and saw it for the first time. I bought my first telescope about 2 years ago. I am now in my 3rd. went from a 4 inch scope, to a 6" scope and now have a 10" scope. My friend has a 24.5" telescope that is about 12 feet tall. The universe is an incredibly beautiful place.

AWESOME panel. FINALLY Maher doesn't invite the one bigoted right wing conservative, Christian nutcase, asshole elitist or crazy feminist to sit in. He likely thinks it makes things interesting but it just ruins the discussion entirely. This was fantastic. A group of open minded intellectuals who made strong, valid arguments and could accept & respectfully challenge the opinions of others on the panel.

in 1937 Carl Jung was in Berlin and watched a march with Hitler and Mussolini. Hitler came up to Jung and shook his hand. Jung saw in his eyes a man “possessed” and then gave a lecture, in London, that Europe was in grave danger. This was at a time when most people were laughing at Hitler, calling him absurd. There’s a comparison to Trump there. Pretty interesting. Point being, is that until people recognize the power of the numinous, and the importance of symbolic life, the “War God” will manifest from time to time, demagogues and so forth.

He shakes his head but Hanauer should seriously consider running for public office. He has a great grasp on what's happening, he's putting it into the best terms I've seen in a long time (and might I add the entire panel last night was fucking fantastic at clearly articulating their opinions), and he's fairly successful at mostly everything he does. He knows what he's talking about, he's credible as fuck and you knew that with the introduction Bill gave him for the interview, and he's diplomatic with his speech (minus trickle down clown lol) and can see the perspective of both leftists and the right very clearly. Run for President big guy.
