We always enjoy when Audi's come in for review, because, by and large, they are excellent. Now, when something fun like the Audi TT RS comes in, well, everything else gets set aside.
With 400 horsepower, 3,300 lbs of weight, all-wheel drive and a 0-60 of 3.6 seconds, yes, we didn't want to give it back.
Here is a question to ask though, given it's the same price as a Porsche Cayman S which would you go for? What about against a used Nissan GT-R?
So, just how good is the 2018 Audi TT RS and does it live up to the hype? That is what we find out on this episode of Rumblestrip.NET and Ten Minute Test Drive.

Timely video as I just put a deposit on a Dayton Gray pearl TTRS this past week that should be arriving in a matter of days. I look at the TTRS not so much as an out and out sports car but as one of the world's best hot hatches. I spent more hours than I care to count researching and test driving before I came around to the TTRS and it was the combination of looks, sound, luxury, tech, performance and practicality that led to my choice. And my price was just a hair under $70k for a car that has everything but the Dynamic Plus package so I am well pleased with that amount of car for that price. Thanks for the video review.

In real-world driving, it seems like it would be tons of fun. Probably not as good on a track as a cayman, but in rain or snow or highway on/off-ramps or at red lights, the TT RS is a monster. Audi Sport offers some awesome-looking performance parts, too. (wheels, exhaust, carbon fiber brace that replaces the backseat).

The Dayton Gray car fell through and I ended up with an Ara Blue TTRS without almost exactly the same spec. I've been in it for almost 3 weeks and have really been enjoying it. It is indeed a fun sports car daily and incredibly impressive in the rain.

Thanks for your reply and congrats! Are you going to make any mods to it?

19" wheels almost definitely and secondary cat. delete at some point. No power mods or tunes planned as I am more than happy with the amount of grunt right out of the box.

Agree. This is the best all rounder. The equivalent cars from other manufacturers get some individual aspects really right but this car gets them all right to a very high standard.

I have been doing a lot of research on my next car with a budget of 100k. I have been trying to get something that I really like for as cheap as possible. I have been looking at gen 1 r8 v10, 997.2, gen 5 viper, Amg gts, GTR, Hellcat, All the big players. I also look into power potential of mods because I ideally am looking for a 6-800hp car. The TTRS is the best option I have found out. The engine and tranny can take gobs of power stock. Essentially the TTRS beats all the other cars mod for mod. It mods like a GTR, The GTR needs a engine rebuild to go above 700whp where ppl are pushing the TTRS close to 8 still trying to find out when they will blow up. The thing is a tuning monster.

The old ttrs and rs3's limit for stock internals is ~600hp and 750nm at the crank. Sure, it can run 700hp for a few short pulls, but its dangerous. The new one can probably do a bit more, but i wouldn't expect much more than 600hp on stock internals.

What would be the maintenance cost on the mid-engine Cayman S? Probably a hefty penny. Another costly concern is that since the TTRS tires are all the same size, you can rotate them for extended life.

Same feeling for me. The TT missed the center infotainment screen. It is good to have it to load balance the info from the driver's side screen as well as entertaining control and display for passenger.

i think the RS3 has the best compromise... with a smaller retractable (!) screen on the dashboard.

I prefer a car with less distraction inside. Most of your preferences you dial in after you buyed it and for small adjustments you don't need a extra screen. I like it clean inside.

Great. Now this cars driver seat is stretched! All good but 19” wheels. 18”. TT interior is very nice. TT base and S are a tough decision as their engines equal the lower cost GTI and R.

Need to test drive the RS3. Some power train in a A3 sedan. With a 997 911 as a fun. At the RS3 would be a nice daily. Although I enjoy my S3 as a daily driver but lust for the RS3.

Porsche is more of a pleasure drive, but this is probably a better daily, able to carry a lot in the back (specially with the useless back seats down) and able to recline thnx to those backseats, which for me is a must on long drives. If there are no kids around that would need a better backseat this might be a daily, not sure about the porsche.

I don't quite understand the comparisons with the Cayman. Sure the base costs are compatible, but people generally don't buy the base car. When I looked at getting one of these, I found that a fully loaded TTRS w/ every possibly option (including ceramic brakes) would cost me around $85K out the door, while Cayman S equipped with the same options would cost about $110K. IMHO you cant just look at base price, you need to figure in all of the add-on costs as well. FWIW, I got the Audi about a year ago and absolutely love it.

The prices are almost identical covering all trim levels between the Cayman and the TT
@SeriousPoo
@SeriousPoo 6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, but that's just incorrect. You need to factor in ALL of the things that make the two cars comparable in spec. That means - 20" sport wheels, navigation, seat trim, PDK transmission, sport chrono package, sport design packages, carbon fiber trim package, PASM suspension, lane change assist, adaptive lighting w/LED headlights, sports exhaust, seat heating, ceramic brakes, high-end stereo, etc. Many of those things are stock on the TTRS, but with Porsche you have to pay for each of them individually. According to Edmunds, that all adds up to $108,400 for a comparably equipped Cayman S.

Serious Poo I speced them as close as I could they were within a couple grand and the Cayman was WAY south of 100K
@SeriousPoo

I know you mean well, it's just that you need to factor in all of the items that bring to two cars to the same spec level. Look at the items I listed, it might help you understand where your pricing difference is coming from.

Audi TT-RS or Nissan GTR? . . . . If you want a car that has been properly shaped and designed . . .obviously not the GTR. If you want a car that has cleverly engineered technology . . .obviously not the GTR. In short, if you want a car that looks good and performs great . . . . . . obviously not the GTR. This car is an absolute bargain for its price...

Downvote for bad information. Gtr is over 550 hp and does 0-60 in under 3 seconds. What in the hell are you talking about. You put another turbo on this thing and we will talk. That being said I am looking to buy the TT RS because it feels like an Audi and the gtr feels like a Nissan.

Another reviewer that can't stay on message of a new car, not compared to used???? People who buy the RS are rich, can afford the ridiculous insurance (not all companies will insure this car or any like it). It is not an everyday driver, but what a rich person would drive to feel good about who they are. I love this car being everything so many at this price are not. Would I own it? That comes down to what I said about rich people. The basic TT is affordable and has excellent performance, insurable and it gives the middle class guy something to fuel his soul with outstanding looks. Which are you?

@94RS 5 жыл бұрын
I hate when people equate a choice of car to a personality trait of said person buying said car. The type of person driving a car does not by any means or sense correlate to the type of car. "Rich people" pfff you need to get off your lazy judgmental arse, find out how to acquire the means to afford better things, perhaps your cancerous mentality you have of people wouldn't cloud your judgment of the nicer cars in life. You're missing out on so much due to your bitterness.

The car for those who can't drive. Fast as hell in a straight line and falls off from there. I'd rather a Cayman. End of day, one is a VW Golf, the other is a mid engine sports car. The TTRS had too much understeer in my opinion. As a GT I get it. Not as a sports car though

I own a TTRS it handles as good or better than my 2016 Focus RS. it’s come a long way since the previous generation version. Understeer is claimed to be non existent by some pro reviewers, but that’s overhype. It’s not a mid engine car. Even with the Haldex system and reduced engine weight there is still understeer but it is mild in comparison to the previous gen vehicle. This car is by far the fastest, nicest, best sounding and decent looking car I’ve ever owned and I’ve had a few good ones.
@UluvDuddes
@UluvDuddes 6 жыл бұрын
I have heard with some suspension mods you can eliminate the slight under steer. Make it handle like a real gem.
@brightbluesmurf
@brightbluesmurf 6 жыл бұрын
Sure the Cayman has that extra flexibility (i.e., oversteer) you might use on the track but you'd have to be driving seriously quickly to see understeer on the MK3 on the road as the car has torque vectoring. I've yet to experience understeer on the road (l have not tracked it). I own the MK3 and have previously owned the MK2, it's a much improved road car

@smurf - exactly, to get a modern sport car into over steering on a legal road, you are already in lots of troubles.

Some have modded these to 1000+ hp. True, the Audi 2.5L will likely never propel these cars into the 7s like many GTRs are doing. However, at least the TTRS & RS3 are different. You don't see many of them on the road. Arguably, the 5 cyl sounds better too. I'd rather be seen in something that looks like a professional would drive, not a re-branded Datsun :)
