I owned a Bonanza for several years and also instructed in various models of the Bonanza and Debonair including the A36. During that time had plenty of opportunities to familiarize myself and others with Bonanza performance and flight characteristics. Pilots who are new to the Bonanza are usually surprised to see what kind of short field takeoff and landing perfomance they are capable of in addition to good rate of climb and cruise performance. All around a very good airplane in the hands of a competent pilot. We all have our favorites. I suppose mine would be a later model F33A if I could afford it.

I fly my F35 into 2W2 all the time. 1840X30 no issues. Also used to fly into Woodbine a private grass field that is 1600. The Bonanzas are great short field planes. Why do you leave the cowl flaps closed on landing?

I have a V35B and POH states cowl flaps closed on landing and both checklist I use.

Right on John. My F35 is based at Skypark 15G. 2400 x 37 isn’t even close to challenging. Fly it weekly. These wonderful E series Bonanzas are some of the best flying machines ever made. Designed for speed but plenty capable on short and unimproved strips. So light on the controls and nimble, you can’t help but smile when you climb out after a flight. Fly a stabilized approach at the correct speed and they land themselves. And you are correct for the F… cowl flaps open for landing.

Great flying! Is that the Debonair C33 with the original 225 hp Continental IO-470-K?

Thanks! It is actually a C33A. They came with an IO-520-B from the factory.

So what are your thoughts on the 182 vs the bonanza? Do you miss the 182?

I prefer the Bonanza over the 182 thanks to its higher useful load, faster cruise speed, and overall better looks in my opinion. Sadly, we haven’t been able to attend any fly-ins due to the current circumstances, but it sure is nice to have a high wing to sit under. We do have a 182 in the club at Fulton as well that we can make videos in if you’d like!
