Tesla states on their website, "Autopilot and Full Self-Driving capability are intended for use with a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any moment. While these features are designed to become more capable over time, the currently enabled features do not make the vehicle autonomous." That's why Sue's hands are on the steering wheel, so she can safely intervene if needed.

Having your hands on the wheel can interfere with movement of the wheel and accidentally override FSD turning it off. That would lead to the driver thinking it was engaged and it just going straight ahead. The driver should have their hand next to, but not holding the wheel. Comments show she is a nervous driver with FSD. The car behaved perfectly and followed the law, even at the point she believed was a "mishap". The car waited until the lane was big enough for the car to fit before changing lanes. It will always err on the side of caution. Humans are not perfect, nor are FSD systems. There will always be unexpected events. Achieving more miles between accidents than human drivers is the proper metric for determining success, which Tesla has far exceeded (more than 10x's). We cannot let an occasional accident derail these achievements.

I've been using FSD 12.3.6 on every drive and I rarely have to intervene. That said there are occasional unexpected actions. I find shadows from trees in city driving sometimes make it think there's a speed bump so it can slow down for no reason. Also map guidance isn't always in sync with chosen route. In very complicated highway exchanges I have to watch that it gets into the correct lane. 95% of the time it's fine. We're 5 drivers and even my wife uses it on every highway drive.

@lbeck37
@lbeck37 26 күн бұрын
Thanks for doing this video. It would be clearer that FSD is doing the steering if you could avoid gripping the steering wheel and let the wheel slip through your hands. Maybe even drive with one hand lower on the wheel and just pinch the wheel with your thumb and forefinger and let the wheel slip through. Give it a little tug every so often and let us know that's what you just did, or just drag on the wheel when it turns (but don't move your hand). Not a big deal, but it's not obvious that FSD is doing the steering when both your hands are on the wheel and your hands turn with the wheel. BTW- I've found that with 12.3.6, on some roads, as long as I keep looking at the road, even with sunglasses, I can drive a long time without being nagged. I recently drove about 5 miles on a twisty mountain road without ever touching the wheel!

I took My Model Y with the trial FSD v 12.3.6 on a 90 minute drive each way from the country through the city and into the suburbs. The FDS was near flawless. Acceleration and lane changing was great. It even turned right on red when the cross traffic had a protected left turn. I was amazed as in navigated a toll booth. Although it was a little timid exiting the toll booth. I assume it was because there were no lane lines. I did have to intervine a few times on exit ramps.

I don't know if anyone reads these comments other than other commenters, but my experience with FSD has not been great. I had 3 months of FSD when I first purchased my 23 MY, and another month free starting today. Today, on my journey from SeaTac airport to Everett, there were several instances that required my intervention. The first was on northbound interstate 5 where it curves near where Tukwila ends and Boeing Field starts. It was heavy traffic but moving at full speed. There was a part where the lines on the road sort of faded like they may have been doing some work. My car braked hard and pulled hard to the right for no apparent reason other than the faded lines. I had traffic on my tail and I immediately cranked the wheel hard to disable FSD. Had I not done that I do think I would have been rear ended (hint - never tailgate a Tesla!) Second issue was coming off freeway and making stop at red light at end of offramp. Here it stopped well behind the line then creeped up very slowly. I had to take over after getting honked at for not turning right on the red (legal). And the third time I had to disable FSD was with a bicyclist in the bike lane. It got way too close to them even though it showed them in the visualization. The bicyclist rightfully gave me the finger for going by so close so fast (around 45mph). So yeah, I think we are still quite far off from getting something that is actually usable. I figure one of the main goals of FSD is to make driving safer and less stressful but my experience is the complete opposite. I see plenty of people like Sue here saying their drive was good. But even on her drive there was one instance where it could not navigate a curve correctly and ended up veering off to the right when it needed to go left resulting in an awkward correction that could have caused an accident had there been a car close and wanting to pass. I also feel like the steering is very jerky especially on turns. And sometimes the acceleration and braking are not comfortable - like a brand new teenage driver is driving. I feel like FSD would work if every car on the road had it because at least it would create appropriate following distances. But as it is, people usually follow way too closely and because of the unpredictability of FSD, it is currently causing more problems than it solves in my opinion. I think we are a ways off before the majority of people would feel comfortable putting their lives in the hands of this developing system. And I am sorry for the folks who have paid so much for this only to be unfairly misled.
@BigBen621
@BigBen621 26 күн бұрын
_there were several instances that required my intervention to avoid an accident._ Too funny! In one of those instances, you took over because you got honked at. That's hardly an "intervention to avoid an accident." In another, you *didn't* take over, there *wasn't* an accident, but you got the finger from a bicyclist. In another, "Had I not [taken over] I do think I would have been rear ended". You say yourself this was speculative; but there's no doubt that in the 100 million or so miles FSD drives every month, it will cause *some* accidents. But with 1.5 *billion* miles of Teslas driving with FSD engaged, including all the miles on earlier versions that weren't nearly as capable, FSD has amassed a safety record that's an order of magnitude *better* than average drivers. This is hardly surprising, because the vast majority of accidents, injuries and fatalities are caused by humans' dangerous behavior, which FSD rarely does, including texting while driving; other distracted driving; drunk and drug-impaired driving; road rage; fatigue; falling asleep at the wheel; medical emergencies; running red/yellow lights and stop signs; wrong-way driving; following too closely; unsafe lane changes; speeding; street racing; reckless driving; loss of control; and probably several other categories I haven't thought of. So FSD having far fewer accidents that human drivers is not a very high bar.

Thank you for posting. I was an Elon/Tesla fan boy for more than 3-years. Paid $10,000 because I'm an OLD IT guy (BS-Computer Science; MSEE-Digital Systems) and I was of the opinion that I should help pay for development. Now I'd join a class action lawsuit to get my $10k back...and I'd then pay $99/mo when FSD-Unsupervised finally landed. I tested software for a system that controlled nuclear weapons, so I have an understanding of when software is "good enough" -- and, yes, I understand enough about neural networks AI to know how rapidly they *CAN* improve. I used FSD-whatever in 2021 and 2022 to do CA-NJ-CA road trips. In 2023 to do a collection of national parks. Never really trusted it unless on Interstates...and even then, the lane changes were often downright DUMB and disruptive. I took the latest version out this week between Ventura and SanFran, ordered FSD to drive often and I hate to report that it was not good. Would have even caused an accident had I not braked hard at an intersection. This software is a LONG WAY before I would trust my own or my family's well-being to FSD. Elon should be giving all us old purchasers a refund, OR wait for a savvy law firm to accomplish a class action lawsuit.

@@BigBen621 Made corrections to clarify why I disabled FSD during the drive. In the instance with the bicyclist, I did take over because it was too close to them, but not in time, and the proximity felt unsafe (maybe 1-2 feet only). I think my point was that I do feel that I am a much better driver than what FSD can currently demonstrate and that in situations that I would not have any problem navigating, it seems to struggle sometimes and do things that are unpredictable and unsafe in my opinion. I feel confident with my assessment because I've been driving for 35 years without an an-fault accident (have been rear-ended twice on the highway from people who were distracted). I can attribute my safe record with not following too closely and always paying attention. But that's the thing - even with my complete attention FSD has proven to be more of a liability than a convenience for me. It would be an amazing thing if every car on the road had FSD and there would be an end to traffic jams and accidents. But I think this requires every car having a system that works together.

I did the recent 30-day fsd trial, and, for the most part, I was very impressed; however, since I don’t live in a major metro area where you may need aggressive acceleration for merging in traffic, I would have preferred an option to slow down sooner at an intersection as well as not rocketing to speed with little or no traffic. If I need to slow or accelerate quickly, I’d like the option to use the brake or accelerator as needed. The "night driving glasses" would be radar sensors, here: a front radar. But Elon refuses to spend money on it, even disabled the existing radar sensor in older cars, and also refuses to have an extended sensor suite as optional equipment that a customer could choose. It is already predictable that FSD performance at night or in rain will be much worse. The newer Model S and X have newer "4D" high-res radar, but it is unclear, whether this sensor is already used. I live in a city with a lot of roundabouts, and I hate that our Tesla's FSD doesn't signal its left turns and exits from the roundabouts as it should. Most people don't either, but the car should be better than that.

Most people think that you need to periodically put pressure on, or jiggle, the wheel while you’re in FSD or auto pilot. However, another option is to move the right scroll (speed control) wheel up or down a notch. This has little noticeable effect on the driving, but resets the attention timer. I prefer this approach because the car won’t think that you are trying to take over like it does if you push too hard on the wheel.

Thanks, Sue, for providing a no-hype review by someone who has read the user manual and is not a super-fan or hyper-critic looking for clicks. My experience since 2019 has been that it was always more relaxing to let the car help drive on long freeway trips, and each update reduced the number of hyper-safe glitches - such as abruptly slowing down once in a while. I live in a major city with both aggressive and timid drivers, so it was less stressful not to use FSD locally until Version 12. That transition provided much more human-like driving, including recognizing and slowing down appropriately for speed bumps, smoother roundabouts, and the bias away from large trucks and any vehicle riding the lane line or bouncing from one line to the other. Not perfect in all weird circumstances, so I too supervise vigilantly.

Just wondering if this is a big benefit for older and less confident drivers? When you get older your reflexes and vision (especially at night) degrade. New drivers, even if they pass their initial driving test, can be uncertain due to lack of experience. Or, could FSD just create a dependency and false security on the software?

"FSD (supervised)" will need competent, fit, aware supervisors, ready to react at any time, so with very good reflexes. And there is a new type of experience required: the experience, when FSD supervised will likely perform well and when it likely will not. Like Sue at the sharp left turn, where she anticipates the bad performance of FSD supervised. I do not know, why she still let's the car get in the wrong lane, but obviously she rather acts as a car test driver there, not as a truly responsible driver. FMPOV, she should have intervened there earlier. Her supervision is better at the construction zone on the highway: she does not trust it and takes over early, indicating right, forcing a reaction of the car. And glad she did: the manual explicitly says that FSD is not yet designed to handle constructions sites. People that want to get rid of the supervision task for a lack of driving abilities: wait for real Level 4 or 5 systems on the SAE J3016 level system.
@AmpdLSU
@AmpdLSU 26 күн бұрын
For the goal of ‘Full Self-Driving (Supervised),’ the focus should be on the ability to travel from point A to B without intervention, accidents, or unpredictable behaviors. As long as self-driving cars share the roads with human drivers, the appropriate metric for success should emphasize high-quality roadmanship. This involves ensuring smooth and efficient traffic flow through mutual understanding, patience, and consideration among drivers, especially in challenging situations not explicitly covered by traffic laws, which occur frequently in high congestion, construction-laden, and accident-prone routes. While this metric is tougher to quantify, it would encompass miles driven without accidents, along with the other variables previously mentioned. Critiquing these scenarios is important and appropriate for this video, which focuses on the overall progression of the capabilities of FSD. As @MooseOnEarth mentioned, the goal is to achieve level 5 automation, hopefully within this decade. Interventions provide valuable training data that is used to evolve the system. The NHTSA website does an excellent job of describing the challenges and goals that have been set, including the benefits of each successive level. They also provide a FAQ section that explicitly answers questions about how automation can aid elderly drivers.

Flashing yellow light on intersections late at night causes my MS to slow down to 15 mph and almost come to complete stop. Could easily get rear ended. Thank you for posting. I was an Elon/Tesla fan boy for more than 3-years. Paid $10,000 (on my $70k YP) because I'm an OLD IT guy (BS-Computer Science; MSEE-Digital Systems) and I was of the opinion that I should help pay for development. Now I'd join a class action lawsuit to get my $10k back...and I'd then pay $99/mo when FSD-Unsupervised finally landed. I tested software for a system that controlled nuclear weapons, so I have an understanding of when software is "good enough" -- and, yes, I understand enough about neural networks AI to know how rapidly they CAN improve. This software is a LONG WAY before I would trust my own or my family's well-being using FSD.

Couple round-abouts to test v12.3.6? Nothing exciting there, the FSD is flawless in every round-about scenario I've thrown at it. But FSD 12.3.6 is far from flawless in my region of northern New England with endless paved and dirt roads containing blind corners, hill round-overs, short horizon lines, close roadside trees/brush/boulders, and endless dirt mountain roads with endless edge cases. Yeah, FSD still requires many interventions in a 10 mile trip to stay away from the soft, gravelly shoulders of dirt roads, and maintain a course of travel more towards center of dirt road, rather than edge of dirt road near shoulder. Much safer in center, move aside when encountering (rare) opposing traffic, then move back to center of road.
