I'm glad Johnny is making vids now! Also amazed at how much technical know-how he has (and, sadly, how much BMW's require for a job that sounds like it should be much easier). One thing is for sure - if you are going to roll the dice on an out-of-warranty German car, you need to find a good, honest mechanic who will do it right the first time and be prepared to pay the cost of doing it right! That, or you're going to get used to sending BMWs to the crusher and buying another one every time you hear "engine out."

Nice detail. For such an inexpensive part, valve seals cause a great deal of work. In a similar project, I handlapped the valve seats. Next time I'll use drill and save myself a lot of time. I like the step-by-step walk through. For novices like me, it really breaks things down well.

There is another way to do this job using the AGA valve stem seal tool. I did it a few weeks ago and rented the tool. You do not need to take the engine out or the camshafts. It is still very time consuming and difficult but doable for an advanced DIYer. This is still a great video though almost like an engine rebuild. It took me about 40 hours to do the job but could probably do it in half if I did it again. After doing the job, I see why shops charge so much.

My valve stem oil seals are still perfect on my 136,000 miles 20+ year old vauxhall/opel astra 2.0 16v Very little oil it uses just normal usage. Uses a lot less than 1 quart every 6,500 miles when i change the oil & filter. I have put mobil 1 0w 40 fully synthetic from 45,000 miles and used redex/marvel mystery oil engine cleaner since 45,000 miles and had no problems with oil consumption with my car.
