Before his body started to break down GI was the arguably the best combination of speed, balance and power the NRL has seen in the past 30 years. There was a player from the 80s/early 90s called Mal Meninga who was similar, but it was a different era.

The ball was about to go “dead” (out after the try line). He jumped from in the field of play, caught it whilst out of bounds in the air, and passed it back to the player behind him, who scored. As he wasn’t touching the ground, whilst touching the ball, he was still technically in the field. The field (tryline to tryline) is 100m long (110 yards) + in-goal areas are typically about 8 metres each (but do vary).
@YobboBear
@YobboBear 2 жыл бұрын
In general the player holding the ball can only be tackled. The tackle is complete when the ball or ball carrying arm touches the ground, whilst a defensive player is making contact. If the defensive player loses contact and you fall over, you can get up and continue.

What you call a "down" we call a 'tackle', and a tackle is not effected until the tackler has brought the ball runners progress to a halt. That is why in some instances you will see Greg, brought down, but he is not held, so he is within his rights to get up and continue his progress. In fact, he is more than within his rights. If he does not get up and continue to run or at least try to, then there is a rule in the book that will award the opposing team a penalty because he was 'voluntarily tackled'. And, that rule has been brought out and used on a few occasions in the past. There is another clip you might find on the internet, Tallis on Hodgson, in a state of origin. In that instance it was Tallis making the tackle. He grabbed Hodgson from behind, but he did not bring him to a stationary halt. Instead, he just kept dragging him until he threw him over the sideline. That also is quite ok. So long as 1. He at no time came to a stand still, and 2, the referee did not yell "held" it is totally permissible. I have seen many americans react to this clip and they all regard that as totally unethical play. I can assure you, it is fine in our game.

Liked and subscribed ♥ The ball has to be put down to be a try....so he had overrun the ingoal area so he caught it in mid air and tossed it over his head before he touched the ground and the player behind him who was still in goal was able to catch it and put it down for a try. Loved watching this mate. The last team he played for in this video was South Sydney Rabbitohs.....The Green and Gold colours was for Australia playing against England...He played hard but he was/is a gentle giant.

In reference to these angles that you keep saying they need to do better with. Just letting you know that these defenders have a lot of options that they have to cover. The ball carrier can kick it over or kick it along the ground or they can pass to a teammate or they can just run it. That's why they can't just run at the perfect angle every time. Sometimes they could do a better job at covering them but yeah just thought I'd shed some light on that for you.

Oh yeah I understand a lot more now. Appreciate you pointing that out to me. This was one of the first videos I did. After I watched a couple of full games I was able to understand it a lot better. When you have a go at their tackling it's not easy to tackle a brick wall coming at you at 25 - 30kmh or 15 - 18 miles. A lot of these players are out there for the full 80mins playing attack and defence. Some have continued to play on in a game with already broken bones because they play with heart and pride. There are not many stoppages and little time to recover. You have to be mad to play it and we love it. Aussies. My profile pic is for the North Queensland Cowboys so at some stage you should check out Johnathon Thurston (now retired) and his kicking game it will blow your mind how he turns the ball in flight. Cheers

You aren't 'down' unless you are tackled and held, so if you get hit and land on the floor you can simply get up and keep going. If you are tackled you can still reach out and score the try if it's within reach, or if the momentum of the tackle naturally carries you into the try area. What happens after the tackle is one of the big differences between the two different kinds of rugby (rugby league and rugby union), but it's the same in both that you need to be tackled and held. For your other questions these highlights from different types of teams. There are the club teams in the NRL (equivalent to the NFL franchises), so Inglis started with the Melbourne Storm then went to the South Sydney Rabbitohs. There's no divisions just straight up 16 teams (soon to be 17 from next year as there will be a new expansion team). But there were also clips from international games where he was representing Australia, as well as State of Origin.

I think the confusion for new timers of rugby is the difference between a try and a touchdown. In NFL you need to hold the ball or have the ball within the area of the end zone to score a touchdown. In Rugby League or Union the ball must touch the ground of the endzone with downward pressure in order to be considered a try, if you lose control of the ball while trying to apply downwtd pressure it is not considered a try. This is why always you see rugby players sliding on the ground or trying to press the ball onto the ground of the end zone. However if part of your body touches the line or outside of it you are considered outside(dead ball zone).

Yeah along with the fatigue factor you also need to take into the tactics of the game as well. In NFL once the receiver has the ball all your attention goes on that man. In league your having to watch for a possible offload at any moment. That's why you'll notice so many guys tackling above the waist to try wrap up the attackers arms.

Yup, running around for 80 mins pretty much non-stop apart from the 10 min break in between the two 45 min halves will take its toll on you. On average, there's around 60min of actual game play in Rugby, where in American Football, the average time of actual game play is just 11min.

The biggest difference about tackling in rugby vs the NFL is that in rugby the ball carrier could pass the ball, or even kick it. So you’re often not 100% committed to just making the tackle. You’re analysing what’s going on around him, is there a supporting runner who he might pass to etc etc. Whereas in NFL you pretty much have one thing in mind and that’s to bring the ball carrier down. Often in rugby guys will break tackles because the defender has different things to keep his mind on.

@@RealFansSports Its ok, he is a little underappreciated even in Australia because it is a bit like the NFL where they hype up the quarterbacks and gloss over the running backs, recievers and DBs. In league they get most excited about halfbacks and five eighths in the same way. But Inglis is like the best RB, WR, CB and SS/FS all rolled into one in the history of rugby league and IMO rugby sports in general. He was just a total beast truly. When Greg threw the ball back the ball was about to cross the deadball line meaning it would been out of play, Greg therefore kept the play alive which allowed his team mate to score. I think in the case of Inglis the reason why the defender angles are "wrong" is that his speed is so deceptive and he deliberately uses that to bait defenders into thinking they can cover him on the short-side (sideline) but then he burns them. His large height and long stride length make his speed deceptive and he often runs ~80% top speed (most of the game), subtly shapes to the inside until they commit enough for him to accelerate to 100% effort and burn them on the outside. It's his signature move. It's what they teach you as a winger and I used to do the same thing, but obviously just as an amateur kid. If you have a high enough top speed the defender will usually underestimate it several times over.

It's fine to suggest taking the correct defensive angles but you have to keep in mind that being very much open play as opposed to set plays where each play the ball in contrast to each ball snap in the NFL which obviously is stop and start and the defence gets to reset and a feel from the offensive formation at scrimmage,a lot of these NRL player's are caught out of position considering it's such a fast open playing game.

Yes! I have a much better understanding of that now. This was before I actually got to watch a full game and had only caught a few highlights. I still stand by what I said on a couple of the situations, but none of them were meant to be negatively talking about anyone, like what a lot of the comments thought lol. This happens every game in the NFL. But now that I’ve watched a game I definitely see how much harder it is to judge

The "angles" thing is caused by the passing game, it's more like basketball. When Inglis makes that line break down the wing he slows up slightly, holds the ball out in front of his body and waits for his teammates, creating a three on one scenario. The defender positioned himself for the pass, and got caught out. He definitely picked a shit angle. And the coach would definitely be yelling at him for not taking out anyone. But there are more variables than American football. Really Inglis had more options than the defender could manage. Inglis "should" of drawn the defender and passed to his teammate, drawn the defender and kicked to the open field behind the defender for his teammate or his last option, go it himself. You should react to a Rugby skills video, it'd probably give you more of a grasp of the game. Thanks for the entertainment. 👍🏾

The NRL has no conference, it's just 14 professional teams, this is the equivalent of the NFL. We also have an equivalents to a minor league. There are minor leagues in Queensland and New South Wales. These are two states where Rugby League is by far the most popular and where most NRL teams are based. My guestimate is that players in these minor leagues are on between 50k to 140k per year, some of these will not be full time professional. Where as NRL players are probably on between 80k (not a starter, but trying to get into the starting team) through to about 1 million per year. Greg Inglis would have been up the top of this range. The State of Origin teams are made from players exclusively from the NRL teams. The best players from the State of Origin series go on to represent Australia. 1st tier International Rugby league teams will be England, N.Z and Australia. Then 2nd tier international teams would be teams like Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Scotland, Ireland, France. This is not the same for Rugby Union however. Which has quite a different structure to Rugby League, both internationally and locally. To generalize between the two, Rugby (what we call Rugby Union) has a bigger presence on the International stage for sure, whereas Rugby League is much stronger at the local level with professional teams in a local league (more equivalent to the NFL). Both England and Australia (and I think to a lesser degree France) have a strong local professional league. To understand this well you would need to understand the history between the two games, when previously Rugby Union was specifically an amateur game (became professional in 1995). Rugby League was born out of Rugby Union as a professional code well over 100 years ago.
