This pretty minimal amount of gear is realistically plenty enough for most of my needs in urban uk - I don't need to be weighed down with heavy pockets, but what do u think: is this not enough gear for day-to-day use?

No, that’s my whole point though - I used to be one of the fully laden down dudes with tons of stuff that I came to realise I don’t actually need very often and have now arrived at this relatively minimalist carry - can’t be doing with bulging heavy pocketfuls of stuff anymore. Sure there’s plenty of times u need other tools but in urban environments or if you KNOW you’ll need other tools you can get them or have them with u in those cases, so I much prefer nowadays to just carry enough stuff to get me by 👍✌️🤘 Different strokes for different folks tho intit. And I know from experience it’s verrrrrry easy to get lost down the rabbit hole! 🤪

I like the minimal concept. I'm a maximalist and I won't be carrying so little, but I like the concept. Obviously it is working for you, and that's great. We don't all have the same needs and wants. Your gear (kit?) choices are all good or great. I do love a Casio wristwatch and a nice SAK (or two). I don't think I could get by with only 55 lumens though. Although in the old days before LEDs, I had a Maglite solitaire with an incandescent bulb. That was about 8 lumens and we thought they were awesome back then.

Ha ha, yeah I remember the days of those old little halogen bulb mag lights! I’ve actually changed to a much ‘better’ flashlight now - Rovyvon a8 or Nitecore Tini 2 is now carried on a neck lanyard - much better way to carry for me 👍 I’ve also tried ditching the Knipex Mini: I’ll still pop them in my pocket if I genuinely think I’m going to need them but for general pootling about I havent really missed them. Have to vary your kit on what you’re doing I suppose don’t you 👍

@@accoutrements4469 Definitely one does. I don't carry a full-on multitool to go the office but I put a Roxon KS-1 in my pocket if I'm going outside (use the scissors to prune) and a Leatherman if I'm going to help someone with a household chore. I once had to take apart a bed platform with 4" Knipex Cobra and surprisingly it was all I ended up needing.

I'm in the UK and use a very similar set up. I use a True Utility multi tool - quite small and only about £10:00 from Go Outdoors, my small SAK which I've had before EDC was actually a thing plus a very small flashlight that I got from Amazon for about £11. I do keep a bigger kit. in my camper van and always a first aid kit in my bag the size of which will vary depending on where I am and what I'm doing. I have a very minimalistic Leather wallet from Amazon for about £10 with my debit card, driving licence, travel card and a bit of cash. I wear a watch and carry a phone too but that's about it and all you need for an urban setting.

Thank you for thew real world down to earth EDC video! The whole EDC thing has gotten our of hand and ridiculous overkill. Like you, I am mostly a city dweller with trips out to go camping/hiking/traveling. So far a small Swiss Army knife has done me well. A 58mm classic on my keyring, and a larger one for troops out of the urban area. One small fglahlight and a few odds and ends is enough. What are they planning to survive, the end of the world? Keep it simple!

Thank you, Sir! Yeah, its very easy to get carried away with the idea of always having everything you need on you for 'just in case' but it can get a bit silly, & in the real world for most people i don't think you need to carry much to be able to get by in day-to-day situations. The apocalypse might be a different matter... but not just in normal daily life!

Minimal UK compliant urban EDC sounds good. My EDC in London used to include an A-Z map and a button compass for dull or night nav. Since my kidney stones, always at least 250cc of water. My med/boo boo kit might be a few plasters, indigestion rennies and paracetamol, dental floss. A bit of string or paracord, a cotton hankerchief and £1 coin or token for supermarket trolly.

As a keen carrier of EDC before it was a thing, unless going into a specific environment, I cannot see the need for fire starting equipment (or water purification) in any urban setting.
@accoutrements4469
@accoutrements4469 4 ай бұрын
You’re probably right about the water purification, especially in urban settings - I keep the little tablets as they weigh virtually nothing and take up virtually no space whatsoever: never had to use them and probably never will. Fire starting: sometimes useful to have a lighter if nothing else I think. And in terms of ‘preparedness’ the point is those small items are just there in case something bad happens. Most likely never will. But, again, the items I carry are so small and light it’s really no penalty whatsoever having them stashed away in a bag 🤷‍♂️

I love the Manager… but the Bantam, which slides right into my Big Skinny wallet, serves me well for urban carry… slicing a sandwich, apple, avocado, etc for lunch. The wee Manager won’t quite manage that. Those two alone does me well the majority of the time. A minority of the time adding the Knipex is clutch. 😎😄

Yeah the Bantam is a superb minimalist knife! I just wish it had a keychain loop - I'm too scared i'll lose it if i pocket carry it, although putting it in a wallet is obviously a good idea :o) The Knipex i don't use constantly but they're so small I just tuck them away in a separate pocket at very little weight/bulk penalty. They're sooooooo useful when i do actually need them though.

I love minimalism. Wish I could reduce the EDC to so few items. I always carry cash and use it as much as possible, primarily for the privacy aspect and odd very odd occasion card machines aren’t working somewhere. Also I don’t like relying on one item for multiple important things. I carry quite a bit a stuff haha but 99% of it gets used everyday at work. On a non working day I can comfortably reduce it to 3 or 4 tools instead of 7

Yup, while it’s fun to build a little kit of useful stuff and gizmos, the reality is that most of it won’t be necessary to have on your person. At least not most of the time. I think what you have is sensible, and you’ll always have it because it’s not a faff to carry. I saw one guy keep a spare bank note and a couple of plasters between his phone and the case, so perhaps those are worth adding that wouldn’t make a noticeable difference in size or weight.

Lets be even more realistic and say that you probably don’t even need the fashion knipex either if you just fuck around the town. I myself am also a minimalist like you and carry small stuff like keychain knife only. In addition though I need big and bulky flashlight (in the jacket pocket) because the sub zero weather drains phones and little batteries in no time. It also gives little sense of security when you walk in dark areas and want to be seen. I pay mostly with card and also phone but like to carry cash because more than often the connections are out and it’s cash only.

@accoutrements4469

Ah yeah of course - I forgot to include keys! Doh!! 😖 Hmmm, I think it’s because I see them as a separate entity - like they’ll be carried separately and they’re not what I consider tools of choice: they’re obviously an absolute necessity so you’re forced to carry them. I think that’s why I hadn’t considered including them in this vid - all the items discussed are optional choices, whereas carrying your keys is not, you HAVE to take your keys with you. Praps I’ll do an update of just car/house key carry 🤷‍♂️ as these items are still edc I suppose aren’t they. I will say, though: my keys keyring consists of just 1 car key, and 1 front and 1 back door key, which can be unclipped/separated if I don’t need to take my car key out with me. And maybe an Alox Classic clipped to the car key too 🙂✌️

Yes on both counts. BUT phone as torch is just quite poor - I mean it’s ok for close up stuff and would be fine for most common situations: I just like having a small dedicated torch that’s better than my phone. And whilst using phone as watch is just fine I definitely prefer having a watch - much easier and quicker, especially for me at work when I need to write the time multiple times whilst working. But yes you’re quite right and technically I could ditch both the torch and watch… that would be the logical minimalist’s choice I guess. 👍
