The RAV4 is a comfy, confident full-fledged family SUV. However, with this generation of RAV4, Toyota has tried to incorporate more personality into the RAV to better compete with the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, Mitsubishi Outlander, etc. However, the character is not too authentic, but I don't think it matters.

CVT's in Toyota hydrides are responsive compare to a nonhybrid CVT. Hybrid CVT's are a multi input planetary gears: 2 electric motors, 1 gas engine upfront and a independent rear electric motor. They have no chain or metal belt like a Subaru or Honda soo they are quick of the line and a very wide gear ratio.

Great video. The determining factors for me getting one is living in a rural environment, and needing AWD, higher clearance than a sedan, and a decent suspension system for all the gravel roads.

We just got a new 2022 RAV4 Hybrid, its our first Toyota. It’s a SE, its Black on Black, its the first Hybrid the dealer we had come in a few days after i called them. Didn’t want black, but it looks really good with the black wheels too. Love the MPG. It’s quiet, and has a great ride. Hopefully the black will stay looking good.

Quick comment on the hybrid “CVT”. It’s not a true CVT in the sense that it uses a belt and variable diameter pulleys. Rather, it’s a planetary gear set that Toyota refers to as the “Power Split Device”, which allows the power from the engine to take both mechanical and electrical paths to the drive wheels. Within the planetary gear set, the engine is connected to the planet gear carrier, one motor is connected to the sun gear, and a larger motor to the ring gear, with the ring gear being connected to the driven axle. Crucially, all three elements of the planetary gear set can function as either an input, a reactionary member, or an output depending on drive mode (i.e. all-electric driving, reverse, acceleration, cruise, braking, etc). It also allows for CVT-like behavior as it can allow the engine RPM to vary continuously by changing which of the two motors is being used as a generator while the other is used as a motor (which is why it is referred to as an e-CVT, or electronic CVT, in marketing). There’s videos out there that explain this much better than I can, but I thought I’d just add a little comment here. It’s a really fascinating piece of engineering

I think you mean that it's not a traditional cvt, it's still a type of continously variable transmission, it's just specifically designed for the hybrid setup. Like a moped uses a CVT, but that's a centrifugal unit quite different from the cvts used in a Nissan.

Damn, you're really good at this. You cover so much more ground and so many more pertinent details than most other reviewers. You don't just recite the manufacturer's specs and leave it at that. Nope, you actually give your honest observations as to whether a vehicle lives up to its stated claims. I really appreciate your level-headed candor. The fact that the Rav4 is very high on my list for my next purchase sure helps. I know the Tucson has better tech and more of a wow factor, but...Hyundai. Plus, all that piano black and capacitive-touch garbage, and a turbo and direct injection for the hybrid's tiny motor. Not good. So, in the end, it's down to a Rav4 (probably a hybrid), a Camry (probably a hybrid), or the BRZ/GR86. Rav4 vs Camry is a tougher call than I expected. BRZ/GR86 is my first choice, while not making a whole lot of logical sense.

Thank you! I really do love the design of the new Tucson but I agree, it is something that I can't see aging near as well as the RAV4. You can't go wrong, id just nail down what your priorities are. I like the camry too and I might personally recommend that for people that do more highway driving or dont use it as their main family car. However, the practicality of the RAV4 and the lack of any big drawbacks makes it easier to recommend to more people. Especially with the ride height, after seeing my gf or friends hit numerous curbs and damage their cars, that extra ground clearance can save a big headache if you let others drive it!

Yes the technology of cars has continued to improve over the past 100 years. This car in hybrid form seems to be as close to being a perfect all-rounder as is currently available, without necessarily being specialised at anything more than that. Toyota offers total reliability, practicality with real economy. It amuses me hearing blasé comments about the car’s acceleration. During the 1960’s 0-60 mph under 8 seconds was reserved for cars like the E-type and hot V-8s and was considered impressive. Today if you need better performance than that perhaps you are looking at the wrong type of car, and given driving conditions, not that usable anyway.

It would be great if you could shed any light on the Rav4 Hybrid's notorious problem with the fuel tank not filling to capacity. Has this issue finally been solved once and for all with the 2022 model?
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 жыл бұрын
I actually mentioned that at the end there very briefly (I wanted to go more in depth but the video was getting really long). There was a fuel pump recall on these but some with 2021s have still reported it. I believe it's for both of them, not just the hybrid and it might be more so down to the fuel tank design triggering the stopper at the pump. A lot of people don't report it though, maybe just because they get used to it. My truck won't fill up near it's 20 gallon tank either (09 tacoma)
@GriffXJ
@GriffXJ 2 жыл бұрын
There's a video of some guys running a Rav4 Hybrid way past empty. I believe they said they went over 100mi after the fuel light came on, which would account for over 2 gallons of gas in reserve, this could be why it doesn't fill up all the way. If you run a hybrid completely empty, you need the dealership to clear a bunch of codes before it can restart, so I think Toyota programmed the light to come on earlier to prevent this from happening.

AFAIK, no tow hooks, loops or recovery points on the Adventure. Good luck if you get stuck. The knee room with that console is atrocious and the passenger seat needs height adjustment.
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 жыл бұрын
Pretty standard for the class though in terms of sizing and lack of passenger adjustment. You should get a Venza if you need more car. And the offroad trims here really are just for the people that want it to look a little tough and feel like they can go offroad but they won't actually take it anywhere!

@@Realistick Thanks for replying. This is a tough one for me because I like everything else about the RAV4, except maybe the road noise. I'm coming from a Subaru perspective on things, and Toyota's soft-road claims need a bit more work. Conversely, Scooby does better with AWD but not keen on the CVT or the reliability record for the past decade. I don't drive enough to warrant a hybrid, so the next one will be gas only. I don't care about power liftgates or wireless charging if the ergonomics aren't right. The market encourages gadgetry but the money would be better spent on making the car more comfortable or useful. For instance, the roof rails are gone on the LE now. Stripping the utility out of SUV. A base Crosstrek gets roof rails. And I hear the base Corolla cross doesn't get a rear wiper. These things are around 40 grand after taxes etc. now. I think we have a right to expect more. And by more I don't mean a heated steering wheel. Prices on the Adventure are nearly base model 4Runner now, and I get that it's the real deal. But I'm not going mudding or rock-crawling. I just want a simple crossover that's good on gas and can haul my stuff to a campsite on a muddy track. I want to know that someone can pull me out if I do get stuck. Thanks for another excellent video. Love your coverage of the dwindling manual transmissions in cars.
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 жыл бұрын
@@Central-Scrutinizer I like conversation on these kinds of things so im all for it. I would also take good ergonomics over extra features and i personally think toyota does a decent job of this, but i find the mazda cx5 to be among the best in this class but the bar is relatively low there. You kind of have to go Venza or Outback to get into the more substantial, comfy part of the mainstream 2 row crossovers. Additionally, you can likely still buy roof rails for a base model and you don't get them on a base Forester either. Weird that they would remove them though, I didn't even catch that!

Its weird how there are so many trims and then so many option packages but still all tall driver can't get a high end car without a Bleepin sunroof. And yeah, what is the point of all these different cariants if you can't build anything because of part shortages. They have had 2 years to refocus on a simplified lineup. WTF?? Also, my understanding is that a Toyota Hybrid CVT is not the same as an all Internal combustion CVT. They used the term for want of anything better and maybe a language barrier. Can't take seriosly anyone expressing concern about cup holders not accommodating 48 oz flasks.Is this just something Toyota of North America threw up for marketing purposes?
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 жыл бұрын
Im sorry the large waterbottle test (40 oz) offended you :( I include that because it gives you a good idea of cupholder size and matters to some. As far as the CVT, it's specifically designed for hybrid use and doesn't have the traditional cone setup, instead using the front motor to make it all work to my understanding. Im not an engineer, nor is this video about how the eCVT works. But this is a continuously variable transmission nonetheless. It has an infinite amount of gear ratios and performs as such. It's a very interesting transmission that maybe I could have dived into more, but for all practical purposes, it's a type of CVT!
@edwardzdankiewicz9068
@edwardzdankiewicz9068 2 жыл бұрын
@@Realistick Sorry If I over stated things about the bottle holder test. Was more trying to communicate that this has never been a thing before and it seems like car reviewer channels have to pick on one or two nits the car companies are OK with or they lose access. But the eCVT is most Definitely not something to lump in with the mechanical CVT which uses belts and pulleys and which had teething pains in it early development. For he Toyota hybrids the system is vastly different with none of the bugaboos the mechanical belt and pulley systems of the early Nissan units.
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 жыл бұрын
@@edwardzdankiewicz9068 oh, I don't get my cars from the manufacturers, I can roast them however I please! I guess I was more so focusing on how the car performs like a regular cvt, not necessarily how the design is a superior one for reliability. Something I might include in later reliability segments for hybrid toyotas. Although it's also worthy to note that toyotas regular CVTs have been much more dependable than most other competitors.
