What's it really like to marry a Singaporean woman? I'm a Japanese married to a Singaporean Chinese, and in this video, I shared some of my thoughts and struggles. Nothing is perfect - there are good and bads to interracial marriage and I tried to share everything with you.
Towards the end of the video, I asked my mother in law how it's like having a Japanese son in law. How does she feel? Any struggles or culture shocks? Hope you enjoy until the end!

I sure hope Ghib is sharing some of the revenue with mother-in-law. She's a co-star. 😉 One difference I thought mother in law might bring up is Japanese like to take baths regularly. Maybe Ghib gave up this habit in Singapore?

It takes two hands to clap. Your mother in law is a very genuine and real person but some people may feel she is too much for them to handle. You are very accommodating to other cultures, probably due to your schooling experience in a foreign country. The stars aligned.

Actually, it's not just a Chinese thing; we Singaporeans generally tend to switch to our mother tongues when among people of our own race, either partially or fully. As for me, I'd usually speak in a mix of Malay and English, and the inclination to do so remains even though my Malay is not really that good 😅

This is my favourite video amongst your few uploads for this year! It's so funny! Especially the one where you mother in law said bowing so much that she'll get a hunchback! HAHAHAHA! Definitely made me laugh!

To see you interact with your MIL so candidly is really good as young people nowadays are not too interactive with parents or other elderlies. Hope they can learn from your example. It is good that you can easily bond with your really nice and open MIL even though you face culture differences. Good job! 👍

I laughed so much when your MIL spoke. The 'hunchback' part especially. Yes Ghib, you're more Singaporean than you are Japanese. I guess it's due to the different cultural exposures in your experiences. Plus, you're very adaptable. There are quite a few things that Singaporean Chinese and Japanese share: a) kanji - well, not in every character we write or speak but we can detect the closeness of the meaning when we read it, b) rice - yeah, it's our main staple, c) chopsticks - it's an elegant way of picking up food to our mouths.

In Singapore, couples usually go back to either side parents home for dinner every weekend. Or go out for lunch /dinner. But nowadays, maybe once or twice monthly as everyone are busy.

MIL or mother’s help is very important for newly weds and family with small children in Singapore. They help in relieving stress of housework, cooking and child care. ♥️

very relatable, about the language issue. :D Was married to a Dutch, during social gatherings, everyone eventually reverts to their mother language... T_T I used to speak German to my mother in law and she would answer in Dutch. Good thing she understood German.

You are the 'son' she never had. Will miss you greatly when you move out. Visiting is different from being present. Somehow, things will work well since both parties are very informal with each other.

Thank you for this!! I watched a video somewhere saying that Osaka people are more impatient, and found it quite true. My japanese counterpart likes planning and doing things v efficiently, systematically and you know we as Singaporeans are v tekitou and change our plans as and when we like it, which he finds really messy. So that was quite a challenge in the beginning. 😆 but yes he has the same comments about that the family bonds here and the open communication! Also that we are v easily readable but more strong headed in our opinions. Looking forward to your skits! Lol

This is an interesting and fun video had a good laugh at the bowing segment lol! Singaporeans are only recently campaigning to return trays after eating at food courts and fast food outlets it will take awhile for our laziness to learn how to be more civic minded and clean up your own mess after eating in public places.

Not wishing to repeat what’s already been commented by so many here about your dear MIL, I’ll just say that quite often this cozy relationship is not the case if you are a daughter-in-law. I will let you and everyone imagine any combination of scenario why that may be so.

Ah yes, because usually its the wife that lives in the family house of the husband for some time in the early stages of their marriage, and they always butt heads in friction with their mother in law in different degrees.

It also depends on where you and your wife live now. It's hard to imagine your in-laws' feeling if your wife lived in Japan close to your own parents now. Especially after having your own kids, and one-side grand parents can only expect seeing them once a year but the other side can see them everyday.

Actually.. mixing languages is the best way for a non-chinese speaker to pick up the language.. WIth time, you might pick up the chinese words they use...

It is a blessing to get along well with your in-laws. It is also true that Japanese reactions can be a bit over extreme in term of bowing and words expression each time they eat something whether good or bad taste also Oishi. Cute or not, also kawai desu.

Mr Ghib. "Chapalang" means mixture of a variety of things. Wow! Yummy "Chapalang" meal cooked by MIL. Just a suggestion : there's a beautiful scenic Yunnan Garden (@ nanyang technology university), it's a park that's open to public where you'll find a man-made waterfall etc.

That common mixture of our mother tongue (mandarin, malay, etc) and English in the way we talk to each other, I think personally is a large part of what it means to speak Singlish. Singlish is more than just the slang we use. Those slangs are really just a subset.

haha.. i remembered hearing this from my friend: her friend is getting married to a Japanese man, so they had a meet up with his family. When the friend mentioned she will continue to work after marriage, the future Mother in law's face turned immediately... 😅

It's true though. It is a little conflicting. Whenever I clear the table after eating but the cleaner auntie/uncle would stop me and say "dont need la ah boy." Would people returning their trays cost them their jobs? But it hurts to see the elderly cleaning up after us... especially the messy eaters. What I could suggest to my fellow Singaporeans is to at least clean up a bit. Don't leave bones/shells/ spillage on the table. Dine as you would at home. That way the cleaner would only have to put your utensils into the trolley and wipe the table.

My mom is Japanese, my dad is Singaporean Chinese. At least you are able to communicate with your in-laws in English. My grandparents didn’t speak English, my mom didn’t speak English or Mandarin. My mom always said it was very stressful, lots of misunderstanding, cultural clashes. 😅😅 My dad spoke fluent Japanese so she had to rely on him to communicate. She learned mandarin through watching Taiwanese movies. This was in the 70s/80s…
