Walking around the ruins of Titchfield Abbey in Hampshire, England, UK, Jayjay Shares this beautiful location set next to the River Meon. The Abbey was built in 1232 by Peter Des Roches, who was at the time the Bishop of Winchester. The Bishop invited a French monastic order of Premonstratensians to create a community at the Abbey. They were known as the White Canons Because they donned white robes.
The Abbey became known as a building that was respectable and reliable accommodation for Britain's elite.
During the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537 the first Earl of Southampton, Thomas Wriothesley, converted the Abbey into a private mansion and called it Place House. He added the four Gothic Tudor castellated Towers which gives the Abbey its unique look. The Abbey became a focal point for kings and Queens to entertain and be entertained. It is claimed that Shakespeare himself performed some of his plays in Place House.
