Bánh Trôi Nước is a poem written Hồ Xuân Hương about 200 year ago. The poem only has 4 sentences and 28 words. The title of the poem and song, 'Bánh Trôi Nước', is the name of a sweet cake that the poet used as a metaphor to describe the life of women in her time. Although they might face hardship and inequalities, they always stay faithful to their family (From youtube comment of @diehardcat). I am amaze how she/they was able to bring traditional technique of Ca Trù, a folk singing style of northern Vietnam into new gene of music like EDM and the video was gorgeous.

I am not sure that you would understand about video content but it mentions to different famous Vietnamese literary works like Lao Hac, Tắt đèn... which most of them describe poor economy condition in the past and have sad ending. But you will see, Hoang Thuy Linh, she's made it so funny and interesting (in the story, the owner had to sell his lovely dog because of his poor situation and then he killed himself, but in this video, the dog came back to him and even studied with pupils in classroom,, haha). Besides, the melody is a combination of modern and traditional sounds of Vietnam north west land so it is extremely interesting !!!

First of all, thank you for your interests in Vietnamese music. I am so proud of this song and glad to see you like it so much. This song really surprises me although I am a Vietnamese. And so, I really want to explain you the meaning of the song, the culture, and the story behind the song. It is quite difficult to get you into all of those things at the same time but I ll do my best :) Basically, in order to understand this song, I have to explain you two things which are the traditional cake (floating cake) and the original poem writer. So that you can understand the imagination they use for the video. Also, the lyric is a poem. Start to be like a mess hahaha so many things to explain :) 1. Floating cake: It is round, and sticky with green beans inside. At the beginning, when you put it in the water, it sinks into water, but will float after boiled. 2. The poem & the writer Writer: Ho Xuan Huong( 1791-1822).. She is one of the female writers of Vietnam. Most of her works are about fate of women in the old society which is dependent, and undecidable in their lives. She was always on women's site. "The floating cake" was written in such a period of history. Poem: (1) My body is white and softly rounded (2) Rising and sinking like mountains in streams (3) Whatever way hands may shape me (4) At center my heart is red and true (1) Ho Xuan Huong always appreciates the beauty of women. And so she compares the beauty of women by the image of the floating cake which is perfect shaped, round, and white. (2) The floating cake is always floating on the water surface after boiled. Quite hard to explain this. But the image of the cake means (like a ball on the water) rising and sinking. This means the difficulties in women's lives which lead them like up and down due to the feudal society where they have to rely on rules, men or whatever and have no right to make any decision. (3) However, the shape of the floating cakes don't depend on themselves. They don't look perfect by themselves but depend on how people shape them, maybe round, nice, or distorted. Once again, this emphasises that women's lives all rely on how people want they to be. (4) In conclusion, giving the fact that the society was so complicated and harsh, women will always keep and remain their beauty from inside, kindness, and nice personality. They are always beautiful from inside and outside. This is the important point and a insight of Ho Xuan Huong, a woman in old society where noone was on the site of women and dared to raise their voices. That is the general meaning of the idea for the the video. Hoang Thuy Linh (singer) plays the role of Ho Xuan Huong in the MV. That is why you see some of the traditional clothes which are also combined with modern styles. There is one very important detail in the MV (3:28) which is the tear. In my own opinion, this represents the deep sympathy with women of Ho Xuan Huong. And the MV ends with the image of a girl writing a poem. That is the image of Ho Xuan Huong when she writes this poem :) The image of butterfly means nothing to the meaning of the song, just makes the MV beautiful, soft, romantic and more effects for the visual look. This song is mainly about the beauty of women, so that why you see all women. One more thing, 100% of the MV was made in Vietnam. "Banh troi nuoc" is a traditional cake in the North of Vietnam. Most popular during Han Thuc New Year on the 3rd day of the third lunar month, water powder of glutinous rice mixed with plain rice, Duong Phen, grapefruit perfume, grated coconut, peeled sesame (sesame). For vegetarian cakes, add green beans, granulated sugar, tapioca flour or tapioca flour, a little crushed ginger squeezed out of water. Drifting cake was written into a poem by poet Ho Xuan Huong: My body is white and round Seven floating sunken with water Snakes are broken even though the hands of the molders But I still keep my heart. The song "Banh troi nuoc" is composed in the form of seven languages, four great (Tang Luat). The lesson consists of four sentences, seven words each, broken in the traditional 4/3 rhythm. The rhyme is sown at the end of verse 1, verse 2 and verse 4.The poem shows the beauty of a woman with the fate of floating and pushing the old woman. Refer to the 7th grade Literature textbook.
