The DeLorean DMC12 was a groundbreaking car. A gull-wing rear engine sports car, clad in stainless steel, looked sensational and promised much but the press were not impressed. Today I find out for myself if it as bad to drive as legend has it.

Greetings from Belfast. I remember when it all happened. I was a young boy and these were made just up the road from me near Dunmurry. My neighbour worked there polishing the stainless steel bodywork.

I saw a De Lorean at a car event that had been cleverly converted to an ev by a wind energy company. The take off speed was phenomenal and was capable of 150 miles range. We had to queue to see the De Lorean whereas the supercars barely got a second glance.Brings a whole new meaning to 'Back to the Future'.

It's a shame it didn't work out. Not just because I think the cars pretty cool, but the people who built it deserved for this to succeed. The factory really did bring the local people together, and in the Thatcher years of unemployment and poverty, it really gave the employees a sense of pride, and showed there was a lot more to them than the daily violence the news insisted on focusing on..

The project De Lorean failed on purpose! The big fish companies Ofc didn't want him do success! Firstly to understand that u must learn how this world really works! But that's a whole another matter. In that time there was that guy who made the engine which runs on water. He cross the US with it easily. But when he wanted to give that design to humanity he was killed in mysterious car accident, and the design disappeared forever.

The DeLorean was hurt by many things, emissions, US standards that required the nose to be lifted ruining the handling, poor build quality, poor management ect. By the time the kinks were worked out and before the Turbo variant could be released the company went bust. A very interesting car that lives on because of it's uniqueness and the Back to The Future franchise. Still love 'em tho, thanks for sharing 👍

The turbo variant surely would have been interesting, but turbo engines in the 80's all blew head gaskets and cooked turbo bearings. So the reliability would not have been good with that option either, but it certainly would have helped the power curve. Even today, turbo's fail like crazy but at least it's usually just the turbo itself failing. 40 years on, I still thinking the exterior styling of the car is great.

I’d love to see you test driving the “Euro spec” version for comparison - without the emission equipment that strangles the V6 horribly (167 instead of 132 hp) and the original suspension as it was designed by Lotus, the DMC-12 was a very decent car for is time. John wanted Ford’s 2.8 Cologne for his car but Ford refused to supply, and for the 1984 model year, John in fact envision Alfa’s Busso V6 as a new mill - he hadn’t liked the PRV and the ill fated deal with Renault from the start. Unfortunately, the PRV was the only engine (other than Ford’s Cologne) at the time with an U.S. emission certificate.

It was infact sister of the lotus esprit. Both were designed by Giugiaro, both chassis and suspension were developped by Lotus. Both had a steel backbone chassis ( by lotus). But the Delorean was a rear engine car and the esprit a mid engined car. John Delorean and Colin Chapman disagreed on that one. Both have a glasfibre tub body. Delorean had a thin stainless steel shell over the glasfibre. I have pictures of my 1980 lotus esprit S2.2 next a 1982 delorean and the resemblance is really there. The PRV engine should have had at least its +150hp like in the alpine A310, but emission rules tuned it back to 130hp and less torque. Its weight with the extra stainless steel shell compared to the nimble light (first generation) esprits also didn't help. The flex in the body.... I think this isn't a problem and inherent to the lotus backbone design. Chapman didn't want these cars to be stiff by design and he really was a suspension magician... I think the weight distribution of the mid engined esprit also outclassed the rear engined delorean. But that was John Deloreans choice , and not Lotus ( Colin Chapman). In the end, The Delorean is a beautifull car, but not a real sportscar.

Nothing hugely wrong with Prv V6 - it was all the US emissions bumph it was equipped with that killed it. As others have mentioned it was used to good effect in the Alpine Renaults, Venturi Atlantique - and equipped with triple Weber's made the Talbot Tagora Sx quite a performer. The Delorean is a flawed compromised machine but then again the majority of the most intriguing cars made are. I'm sure you could actually dynamically modify a Delorean in to a very decent drive.

Hello Jack mate! As you said... "It would have been incredible" if it was released with a more appropriate engine... Well, let me tell you what it was like WITH a better engine! Because I KNOW! Back in the 80's I bought a DeLorean as a bank repossession with a blown engine... In fact the engine wasn't in the car at all, so I bought a "roller". And, it was Ferrari RED! Which was a "Dealer Installed" option, and very rare, as it needed special paint to adhere to the stainless steel body. Anyway, after buying the car, I discovered inside the car (along with the exhaust, starter, and various other parts stuffed in the cabin) a receipt from a shop. I called them, told them I was the owner of the car, and wanted my engine back. They hadn't done any work, as the owner hadn't given them the deposit, so I ran downtown Chicago and got the engine back. I pretty much had the entire engine, minus a few bits and pieces. So, I went about rebuilding it. After the rebuild, I was thoroughly disappointed with the performance, which one could describe (honestly) as anemic, to say the least. Its performance did not match the way the car looked. So, I took some measurements, and tried to figure out what exactly what would fit in the engine bay, and found that a GM 4.3L Vortec V6 should fit in there nicely! I found a wrecked GM truck, and bought the engine out of it. After a lot of faffing around, I had an engine adaptor plate made, and bolted to the engine, and it fit beautifully! At the time, one of my mates worked for a Performance Racing Shop, and was a brilliant TIG welder, and he welded me up a set of stainless steel equal length headers. It was tortuous, as we had the headers going towards the front of the car. Then once past the collectors, reversing in a nice "trombone" curve to the stainless steel "mufflers" (which didn't muffle much! :-) as it was a dual exhaust system with Superbike cans) I bought from SuperTrap. In all, it took more than 6 months to get everything right, but in the end I had a car which finally approached its looks, with its performance. The stock Vortec produced 195 bhp, and better yet, over 260 lb ft of torque, the midrange was great! IN STOCK FORM! I would imagine (as I never put it on a dyno) that with the tune, equal length headers, and pretty much unrestricted mufflers and MSD ignition, it would have been producing somewhere North of 200 bhp (225 bhp?), and maybe 300 Lb Ft of torque? Which really helped move the somewhat portly DeLorean with some serious alacrity! I had specifically bought the truck engine as it had stronger main bearings, and I wasn't sure what other mods I'd do. So, what was it like? Well, it felt like it always should have! It accelerated very quickly, but the sound.... Oh My Lord! It sounded BE-U-TI-FUL! The handling didn't change much at all, and was really helped out with a new set of Michelins (stiffer side walls), despite the Vortec being a little heavier (although maybe not too much as I'm sure my exhaust system was substantially lighter than stock system. It did have a tendency to get "tail happy" on exiting corners under power (in much the same way as a rear engine 911), but it was very controllable. It was a lovely car to own and drive, and turned heads everywhere it went. After that, I kept it for a year or so, but moved onto other projects and sold it. I often wondered if all that work held up over the years, maybe someone knows. Thanks for the honest appraisal of the stock DeLorean, as it wasn't a "Great" car. I'm sure it would have been much better if they had come with the HP with which they were originally envisioned (and suspension upgrades to match).

Must have looked gorgeous in Ferrari red. I've seen a photo of such a car in a British classic car mag (I may still have). May have been yours? Was that the same motor as the 4.3 used in 1980s Chevrolet Impalas and Caprices? Very nice sound they have also. I read some had the Buick 3800 fitted as well. As a six cylinder fan I prefer such transplants to any V8. If it is essentially the same motor that would be a thrill to me as the Impala always reminded me of the Delorean at the front.

The PRV (Peugeot, Renault, Volvo) V6 in this engine was originally designed as a V8. Then the oil crisis came in 1972 and they cut of 2 cylinders - resulting in a 90 degree V6 which is quite uncommon for a V6 and giving it's rough running. Later a different crankshaft was fitted resulting in a better running culture. With a turbo it produced 220 HP in the Renault Alpine V6 turbo. Still not a lightweight sportscar engine, but at least with better punch. The engine was produced in North of France (Douvrin) in a factory called Française de Mécanique which was a joint venture between Peugeot and Renault. Today it's a Stellantis engine factory

That's false: at launching from the PRV (Peugeot Renault Volvo) association, a V8 AND a V6 was planed, but the oil crisis did kill the V8 (the gasoline prices in Europe are extremly high because incude 50 to 60% taxes!). The main fault on the V6 PRV was the crankshaft: V6 at 90° are very current (classic US V6 are all at 90°) because the engine is deeper and it's much easyser to design the intake, BUT to run soft, this 90° angle need a offset crankpin crankshaft, and this was not made on the first PRV's to reduce the costs.... The Maserati V6 WAS NOT made from a V8 : this was confirmed from the Maserati engineer Giulio Alferi who make it and say that only the design from the combustion chambers was inspired from the V8 Indy, but all the rest is completly specific, no other engine use the same internal design who is closer to... a motorcycle engine!...And like the later PRV, the crankshaft had not ofset crankpins like it's made on 90°V6 to run soft (equal angle between explosions)

Jack, Had mine for 22 years. Did you realise the steering wheel is adjustable for reach and angle? Best job is to decat (frees up about 20bhp) and cold air intake which gets rid of that corrugated pipe on the right hand side of the engine. Full European Spec. Prototypes were around 170bhp. Definitely a GT but it will press on because your very unlikely to be able to over power the handling and tyres at least in the dry. You will start to run out of brakes if you drive like a hooligan (Trip to Le Mans 24 Hr 😉). As the fronts are solid discs but lots of upgrades are available. The upside is that brake pads are really cheap…fronts are Ford Cortina and rears are DB5/XJS but with slightly bigger pistons in the callipers. Nice review 👍.

Yes, the engine was lackluster, but what really killed it was the changes in US DOT regulations that had happened in the 70s and 80s. So the already borderline sufficient engine got de-tuned and choked with lots of emissions crap, and the suspension got lifted in the front to raise the headlights (just like US spec MGs of the period drive around with a stance that suggests the engine was removed). And the final nail in the coffin was that John DeLorean was a crap businessman and willing to do shady things. Tune up the suspension and swap out that Renault dog and its amazing how good these cars become. Also keep in mind this was the 80s, so if he'd have sourced Rover V8s (which are basically Buick V8s), I think these would have sold way better. In the US market at that time, people still equated performance with a V8.

I am so fortunate to have worked at an independent French car garage in the southeast US in the late 90s through the early 00s. We were Peugeot specialists and a Bosch authorized service center. Built hot 505 STXs based on the improved 2.8 liter PRV (Peugeot Renault Volvo) V6 that they were equipped with utilizing the short block from the bastard Eagle premiere sedans. Did you get those in the UK and Europe? They were a 3.0 liter PRV, transverse application. With the Pug heads, they made an estimated 220 HP. Required premium fuel. Had a Bosch referral '81 DeLorean with an aftermarket RayJay unintercooled installation. The engine was shot. I had no clue that the DeLorean used the PRV motor at that time, car was not even on my radar, they were so rare in the area. We ended up building a hybrid 3.0 for them. Had Cometic make some .050" thick head gaskets, dropped the boost to 8psi, tinkered with a 930 K-Jet control pressure regulator to get the AFRs into the safe zone and piggybacked both an MSD boost retard module and a Saab 99 Turbo water/meth injector to keep the engine alive. I've had my hands on some bizarre and spectacular builds over my career and this is foremost among them. IIRC, the turbo was a K26 clone. We knew nothing of water/air intercooler at the time. I couldn't afford a TIG, just knew what Should work, and fortunately, this build did. The engine outran the chassis and the brakes. Big time.

A few things to consider. The PRV was an all aluminum V6, and it's not heavy as Jack claimed. The DeLorean was a product of the gas crisis, and like many cars of that period, suffered greatly from the newly required emissions reequipment which sapped ~15-30hp away from the PRV. At the time, it's competition like the Corvette, didn't fair much better at only 190hp, or the Porsche at 165hp. The late 70s-80s were the dark era of sports cars in the U.S. as the EPA tightened down on emissions and the gas crisis rid us of thirsty V8s. Jack spoke earlier of his love for early Esprits and how well they handed....well the Esprit was literally developed side-by-side the DMC12 using the same frame and suspension. Again, U.S. regulations at the time forced DeLorean to raise the bumper height of the car thus completely ruining the tuned suspension and drivability. But as someone who's owned both an Esprit and a DeLorean, I found the cars to be very similar in handling with the DMC for heavy in the back due to the engine being pushed to behind the rear axel (rear engine) vs. the Esprit which sits before the rear axel (mid engine).

A completely accurate statement: 'The body is completely clad in stainless steel'. Unfortunately, therein lies one of its problems. There is actually a plastic body underneath the exterior panels so the car has 2 bodies, a product of the change in materials choice and production philosophy when the original ERM monocoque proved unworkable. That's the last thing you need when it's given only 130hp. And sales were never going to be stellar given the poor build quality and the competition in the market. An Alfa GTV6 was cheaper, slightly lighter and a lot more powerful, flakey build being offset by that wonderful Busso V6. Or you could have a Porsche 924, similar power but a lot lighter and sublime to drive, while if my memory is correct even the much faster 924 turbo was at about the same price point as the DMC-12. But at least it looks good, even today!

Those Renault V6 engines were quite smooth and torquey in other applications. I remember a business contact in the trade managed to fit one of those engines and transaxles into the bed of a tiny Honda Acti-Van fusing the Renault driveshafts to the Honda items. It had a heavy weight added behind the axle and would not only go like a rocket but also pull wheelies up the road! The only issue of course was that the driveshafts kept snapping until the counterweight was removed🤦‍♂️

The engine could have been made to develop more power. In 1973, BMW showed what could be done with the 2002 turbo and that was 8 years earlier and Lotus, who did development work for DeLorean, produced the Esprit Turbo only a year later in 1982. The problem was surely the transaxle which would not have withstood the torque. Porsche had a 3.3l turbo in 1978 with 300 BHP fed through a transaxle.

And Franco Sbarro and his SV1 from 1973, perhaps Guigiaro & De Lorean took the inspiration, lol.

Great review. Thanks! This is a dream car of mine. I hope to own one, one day. The design of it still looks amazing all these decades later. You hit the nail on the head. This car had so much promise but was cut short before it was able to hit its stride. I know I may sound crazy for saying this but I would much rather have this car than the latest Lambo or Ferrari. First thing it has a manual transmission which is becoming more and more rare. Second, this car is just so iconic. Because this would be my Lambo or Ferrari I would spend the money to do a full off body and frame resto mod updating the suspension, making sure the chassis and body are sorted and re-enforced to make they are more rigid and doing not just a stage 2 but a stage 3 upgrade to the engine. With Delorean Motor Company in Texas, all this is possible and can be done by people who know and love the car. Again, this is my dream car and I hope to make all that happen. Thanks again.

Well honsetly speaking the automatic transmission is more rare than the manual on a Delorean. It's about 1/3 the number of automatics compared to the manuals (you can search for the right numbers on google). Of course there is a bit of a slower performance with the auto, but considering the delorean isn't fast anyway that shouldn't be such a problem. It's more about it's style and history, not about performance at all.

@@philippegisie5345 have you ever driven a manual delorean? The clutch pedal is really hard and (to me) way worse than to brake on an automatic transmission when you‘re standing in traffic..and i guess you have to use the clutch way more often than the brake on the automatic. I‘ve been driven both and decided myself for the automatic, even though it was harder to find an automatic over here (germany). Only benefit for the manual was that you can choose in which gear you are and you have the feeling that you might be quicker due to shifting action..but in real life this will be about approximately 0,5 seconds quicker. Not that noticable as the Delorean isn‘t fast anyway ;)

I suspect you have a tired one there with worn systems. You're right about the drive train though, the prv6 was a stock item that fitted the bill at the time but was underpowered. There was a plan to turbocharge it, and quite a lot of them have been. One thing said though, it would do a huge amount of miles as seen in Volvos of the time, a very robust power unit if reasonable maintained that suited the ethos of Delorean's long lived project ideals. The biggest issue for me with the DMC12 is as you say, it is a product of crossed purposes; looks like a rocket ship, goes like a Volvo. Good video.

Can you imagine if they had access to that joyous 3.0L Yamaha V-6 that Ford chucked into the Taurus to make the SHO? It made about 220hp with a very mild cam, with a bit of tweaking it could have made 250+hp and roughly the same torque. Now as John DeLorean was a bit of an outside the box thinker, he may have thought of Turbo charging, Supercharging,...or both? Let's say for argument's sake he only managed 250hp and 250lb-ft of torque. From 135-ish hp to 250, and the change in seat of your pants torque from 150lb-ft to 250lb-ft!! The smaller lighter Yamaha lump would have spiced up that car and made it at least respectable on the road. It could have kept up with the Mustang GT's and the dismal 80's Corvettes that were it's market rivals, even though he pitched the car much higher. Or as You said that gorgeous 3.0L Alfa Romeo Busso engine that would have transformed that car!! Guess I should go down to the local wreckers and see if there's an old SHO engine worth pulling and rebuilding for when and if I'm lucky enough to run across a DeLorean DMC12!! Great review!! @@pashakdescilly7517 Absolutely!! Also, a fantastic engine! I was speculating that Yamaha is big enough to produce the quantity of engines to DeLorean at the time, they also have tight quality control over their products, not that Jag doesn't but they are still more of a boutique builder in a lot of ways. That V-6 was also in the Mondeo ST220 I believe and was a 90's developed engine between Ford and Cosworth. Thanks for the comment, great choice of an engine to drop in. I'd go for the Jag version if for no other reason than the variable valve timing. I know there is a company offering that engine as a kit for the 1st and 2nd gen Mazda MX-5's and I imagine that would be one handful of a little sports car!!
