Today we are looking at brand new handheld - Anbernic RG556. The Specs are quite impressive - Next gen chip Unisoc T820, 8GB of RAM, 128GB Storage + Micro SD Slot. It has also beautiful OLED Screen with 5.5'' and 1080p resolution. On the paper it looks really good and in the real life I was also quite amazed by what all it offers. Let's jump into it :-)

Thanks for this video. Information: You has to set the "hardware download mode" to "disabled (ignore transfers) BUT you has to set it up for every single rom in aetherSX2. The option only can be found at the main menu of aether. Hold and press the rom you wish to setup and click "game setting" and go to graphical settings. Scroll down and the last entrie in *renderings" is the hardware download mode. Just disable it and try the game

@@ZealousChuck Too much to explaine. Just google "aetherSX2 hardware download mode" and you will see several threads about this. It is necessarily to make racing games like gran turismo 4 running.

I sold mine in less than a week after receiving it. The ps2 performance wasn't enough. Some games had huge slowdowns, and playing at 1x resolution on a 1080p oled screen isn't fun. I'm much happier with my odin 2 pro. Totally worth the extra. The performance gap is abysmal.

Anbernic always prices way higher than everybody else, that's why I'm just never gonna be a fan of them. I always wait for someone else to come out with the same chip in a handheld for half the price. The amount they were and still are charging for OLD OLD RK3326 chipset handhelds is almost laughable. You can get devices with that overplayed chipset for like 40 bucks. Maybe even cheaper. Always cool to see what people are releasing though. I just know that I have a ton of other options at better prices so I'll never buy an anbernic 😂

Your ambernic performed better than my Odin 1 Pro on Geekbench 6! (Single:565 Multi:2049) The games didn't play quite as well as my Odin, but I had long setup times when I got it. Another awesome video! Thanks for the in depth review. I was definitely interested in the OLED screen... Vita 1000 4-Ever

I have an Odin 2 pro and in terms of speed it seems to have no problems with any PS2 game, it can even play heavy Switch games, I highly recommend it, the bad thing is the abandonment and cancellation of emulators, especially on Android. Oled screen is a good point on Anbernic.

That wave effect on camera is called PWM - Pulse Width Modulation. OLED display cannot dim pixels, so it basically inserts black frames into the picture. If it's done very fast, human eye cannot see it, cameras can. Also some people are very sensitive to it and their eyes can hurt without realizing why...

@@ZealousChuck yeah, that PWM depends on per display basis. Different frequencies may be in sync with your camera, other might not.

One thing to note it can't do usb/hdmi out and charge at the same time. So only one and not both which makes it less useful as a tv docked device.

Ciao, Chuck. Comrade. You should try Sega Saturn game for the test of emulator if you don't know of that console. I would say that the RG556 were it is a cheap emulation device and best to get. If i couldn't afford Steam Deck or still, then i will get RG556 to play Sega Saturn and some emulator like you test PS Vita game. 😁 🤘 👍

closest thing to Ps vita that I got Ayaneo air 1's Oled 5.5 amd 7840 does vita emulation very well with the compatable games, psp, ps1, ps2. Its pricey for now but thats the only one that has the form factor and power.

Powkiddy X28 clone and the design of the X55 😆. The first ergonomic handheld from Anbernic. And for the first time, proper shoulder buttons. So Anbernic is still learning from Powkiddy. But the price is still outrageous. And the resolution is lower. I prefer IPS for gaming. And the Game Black on Xbox Series X. 🤩 Love it.

Resolution is 1080p and it is oled so it's really nice. Joysticks and triggers are way better on rg556 and price to performance ratio is also great. Considering x28 can barely run ps2 games and it costs like 150

@@ZealousChuckResolution is lower, Powkiddy X28 has 1280p. And price is only 120,-. PS2 runs great on the X28, all games I've tested run great. No problems with PS2. But I'm no PS fan, I like Xbox much more. Anbernic was always so bad in price, ergonomic and the bad triggers (placement). But now they've built that device like Powkiddy. But way to expensive with 100,- more.

@@Vegan_Lifting The Powkiddy X28 has a 720p screen not 1280p. The Resolution of the X28 is 1280 x 720 not 1980 x 1080 like the RG556. The RG556 has the higher resolution screen. 😕

Too bad the analogue sticks are so bad, they feel terrible to use physically and functionally; I returned mine and got an Rg arc-d, I've been quite happy with my choice. Those switch style sticks are trash on everything that uses them, though these are a special kind of horrible to use.

I haven't tried that one, but I have tried gta3 and bully those were running full speed at 1x so I'd say it shouldn't have issues at 1x

@@ZealousChuck what i mean by switch style is that criss cross placement, where the thumbsticks are not across from each other. which is something that sets the vita apart from almost any other handheld (not counting the steamdeck, but that's more of a breakfast table console anyway). ←→

Can you explain to me how is this device better then Odin 2 even Retroid Pocket 4 pro is trash compared to Odin 2. Odin 2 is a handheld beast it can play any PS2, GameCube, Wii, DreamCast, N64 games at 6x resolution at full speed this device struggles to run most PS2 games and Wii games at even 1x!

Hell even another commentator agreed with me that Steam Deck was better all rounder and more powerful than Odin 2. Now you're claiming Anbernic RG556 is better than Odin 2. Why do you make such ridiculous titles and make videos of low end handheld consoles asking if viewers if their better than midrange powerful handheld devices!

Then you come back to making PS Vita videos. Just like beating a dead horse and you do it for views and attention it's sad that crappy console like PS Vita is long dead and people like you obsess with it each week getting excited for crappy ports of games that we can already play on. Our mobile phones, PC, steam deck, rog ally, Odin 2, rp4 pro and get excited like it's newest thing to come out on vita that's just sad!

Vita > every bullshit Anbernic puts out. I have a very bad experience with this manufacturer, I got a 351v and after a while it wouldn't start up after I keep it on standby, stopped starting up, later stopped charging, then the button fell off, despite me taking good care of the device generally. Now compare Vita, runs almost all retro stuff as per 351 and when in transit, I put it on standby, resume later... basically, don't have to worry if on standby their OS will crash. But when it did run, was Ok all the way to PSP.

@@ZealousChuck Yeah, that was when I decided I wouldn't buy any Anbernic products. Basically, 100 dollars down the drain, but a valuable life lesson. This is what I did, started getting only actual hardware. I bought a Switch and 3DS soon after, jailbroke both. For Switch, nothing beats games on actual hardware, 3DS ran GBA and NDS near natively, so that was perfect for all Nintendo games. Finally, my Vita, my all-time favourite console (as they say, Vita is life), emulated PS1/PSP flawlessly, I added in Retroarch and never looked once at this nonsensical Anbernic junk. NDS / 3DS more or less needs 2 screens anyway. PS1/PSP run almost natively on Vita, which also has some PS2 games published. And 3DS has pixelated screen, so when I emulated SNES on it, found that the screen displayed games beautifully. I truly advise - steer clear from Anbernic and all that, while I've not tried Retroid, this product range is the worst I've ever had as a retrodevice. Vita is soooo old... yet it performs flawlessly every time. Goodness, I am shocked at it's quality and note - this doesn't even properly run PS2 games properly. My handphone will run them better on NetherSX2.
