We have a vehicle we park on the driveway, so leaving a garage door remote in it would be a security vulnerability. Inspired by your CarPlay automations, I created a shortcut that checks location and then state of the garage door. If at home when phone disconnects from CarPlay AND the garage door is closed, then it will open the garage door. If any checks are not true, then nothing happens. So how do you open the garage door to park before you disconnect your phone from CarPlay? (i.e. turn off the car)

A while back, I attempted to do a personal shortcut that would text my spouse telling her "I just got to work. I love you have a good day." Once it sensed I was in the location of my job. I'm not allowed to have my phone on me at work so I thought this would be a good way for her to know that I'm now at work and she has to call my work phone and not my cell but I could never the get the location to work. This is an awesome alternate! thank you!

Hi Shane! Thanks for your cool video! You don’t need necessarily carplay for that… I use « when my iphone connects to the bluetooth of my car’ s radio » then I execute my shortcut… have a good day!

I have an automation/shortcut that says hello then brings up a menu of my favorite Apple Music playlists so I can select what I feel like listening to. It’ll then play the playlist on shuffle. :)

Very nice I implemented in such a way that based on format hour i find out its morning, afternoon or evening and based on that it greet me saying Good morning myname have a safe and nice drive

Thanks for the inspiration. After watching the last video I immediately created an automation that checks if the temperature is low and tells me that it is cold and that I need to drive carefully 🙂

Shane, I really appreciate you posting this idea. I wanted to expand on it a bit if you don’t mind. I created a stateful dummy switch in HomeBridge named SMD Trigger (Start My Day Trigger). I then created an automation that resets it to Off after 9am. I then added to the top of your Shortcut the following: If SMD Trigger is On/Stop Shortcut - Otherwise - Set SMD Trigger On - End If. This will keep the shortcut from running more than once if you make stops before you arrive at your final destination. Keeps my wife and kids complaining that it runs more than once per day. Hope this helps someone out there.

Hi Shane, thanks for the video. I took your “start my day” shortcut cause it’s awesome, and I took the open maps shortcut from your other video. However both of them made me click on continue on my iPhone when they started up, even though I have them both set to run immediately without notification. Not sure what’s going on….but this is the first day so maybe it’s only the first time it runs?

I've used a shortcut for years on my phone that I just say "heading home" to Siri and she sends a message to my wife that says "Heading home. I'm X mins from home." 'X based on my current GPS location and total travel time to my Home location".

The "Start My Day Car" shortcut is great. Downloaded it from your site, thank you, I could have never made that shortcut myself, shortcuts are just way too confusing to me. How would you have Siri ask me "What music would you like to hear" at the end of the shortcut??

Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful. You should just be able to use "Choose from menu". That would be the easiest method I think.

I have a homekit meross garage door opener, for months it showed up on my chevy infotainment screen using carplay and I could use it to open my garage door. About a month ago the icon that showed up in the carplay app on the infotainment screen would no longer operate. The app on my phone works fine but using carplay it no longer works. The icon still shows up on the infotainment screen but is inoperative. I've tried everything I can think of to fix it but cannot get it to work anymore. Any idea why or can you do a video on this? Thanks!

These videos are soooo helpful! I don’t know if you’ve done this already, but I just bought an Aqara Vibration sensor. I’m trying to make it so that when my washer finishes that it goes off and notifies me. I kept getting alerts from the sensor when I just have it go off when motion isn’t detected. Do you know of a way to write an automation so that when it the wash starts and then finally ends that I can then have my HomePod do a custom alert notifying that the wash is done? I’ve tried building it out but I can’t get it to work right. Help would be much appreciated. If you have a video already, I could just watch that. Thanks!

Awesome video! I use to personal use the car play automation to open garage door when CarPlay disconnects. Then to close garage door when it connects. Of course before it does so it check location to be sure. Worked great and was awesome until MyQ decided to stop allowing other apis to work.

I have an idea for a CarPlay shortcut. How about siri saying something like, don’t forget your baby or something in that line to avoid babies forgotten on the back seat of the car. Maybe using the location of the daycare if the parent is in a hurry and forgets to drop the baby. I have heard a lot of news of this happening.

Hey gang. Bit of a problem I’m trying to solve. My living room is lit by 1 overhead fixture on a conventional switch, and 2 lamps plugged into standard wall plugs. I’d love to get to a place where all 3 are controlled by the same switch (ideally a dimmer, but I’m willing to give up on that if need be) - without adding a second switch or remote into the equation. Basically I want the existing light switch in the room to also turn on the lamps. The problem that I’m finding is most smart switches (Caseta, etc) aren’t able to also actuate a smart plug. I could theoretically “pair” the devices with a string of automations, but I’d love to actually just have the thing work on its own. Any suggestions?

Nano leaf essentials A19 bulbs in the lamps. Lutron Caseta switch (I highly recommend and have dozens in my home for years now) or similar for overhead light(s). HomePod or HomePod mini to control the show. Set two automations in the home app. One that turns on the lamps when the overhead is on and one that shuts off the lamps when the overhead is off. You could exchange the smart bulbs for smart plugs if you prefer.

How do you set a shortcut to launch when you are 1/2 mile radius from house or gym. So as an example, MyQ will launch to open garage door or gym app will launch on Apple Watch as you approach entrance. Thank you sir.

Location based automations are a little different because they require you to authenticate on your device. I use the action button on my Apple Watch to check my location, and IF I'm at the gym, run my gym shortcut. You can see how I set that up here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLCmdpx1maqrc30.html

@@shayweiss5251 Yes they are not cheap, but I've found worth the cost in the long run. I compared it to some cheaper alternatives a while back (before they ever sponsored me or knew who I was). The cheaper ones never had enough torque to actually turn my shut off valve.
