As I’ve ranted previously, the removal of shop class from high schools has done more long-term damage to our workforce than most people can even contemplate. Thankfully, organizations like unCommon Construction are picking up the slack, and I'm proud to support them through mikeroweWORKS. This a pre-apprenticeship program that could (and should) work as a model for every high school in the country. Check out this short video, and share it far and wide.
PS. Big thanks to Wolverine, who has been supporting these guys for the last five years. This year, they allowed the students to help design a work boot, and it is seriously the most comfortable work boot I’ve ever worn. If you need a pair, $30 goes to unCommon Construction.

The house we bought back in 1975 was built by the shop class at the local high school. It was auctioned off when it was finished and my dad won the auction. No idea what he paid for it, but it was so fun watching it roll down the road on a huge trailer to our foundation!

What a wonderful thought...not all kids are sitting in their rooms glued to games and you tube. Not all kids are pretending to care. Not all large corporations are focused on the dollar over the greater good of people. This is a trifecta of what's great about humanity. This is the true spirit of life...people helping people. Sadly, none of us will see this every 5 seconds on the news or pounded down our throats on social media. A huge shout out to Mike Rowe for the spotlight shining on what's right about America. Thank you. I wish the greatest blessings to all involved.

I am 65 years old and have worked in the trades one way or another all my life. I have been an auto mechanic, plumber, electrician, carpenter, ran a framing crew, ran software and designed roof and floor truss systems, managed a truss manufacturing company. When I got out of high school I figured if I could fix a car and or most things in a house that I would never be with out a job, and I never have, and still do work at it. The things that Mike Rowe are doing with and for these young people and help get them into the trades is a great thing and great for this country. It does this old heart good to see the young people getting into this type of work and Mike Rowe helping them any way he can along the way. We need more people like this in this country now more than ever. Keep up the good work Mike, you are doing a great thing.

I'm so happy to see you helping young people get into the trades. I helped my college grad niece, who was working at a dead end security guard job, get into an electrician apprenticeship. She's making good money, she's happy, and doing great.

Great stuff! My Dad was a unionized Carpenter up here in Canada, making BIG bucks all over Canada mostly on northern hydro dam construction. Myself, I was an underground mining equipment operator, which is recognized as a trade in Ontario Canada. I also made BIG money on a trade that I truly loved, I'm retired now after 43 years, but still miss it so much.

I’m a grumpy old man lol having grown up in the 70’s and working after the military, a great time in all my memories and was genuinely concerned about our future generations. These young men have restored my faith in the younger people coming up now. The mainstream media tends to focus on the turmoil and not so much on the positive stories like this. Thanks Mr. Rowe for caring about our future civilization.

We need more of this. I know I was meant to come to college (I'm in my final semester now!) but college is not for everyone. My main complaint about high school is that it prepares for college but not for the world. In my opinion, high school should provide the option for people to take more classes preparing them for life on their own. How do you do taxes? How can maintain a vehicle? So and so on. High school should also help people explore different careers. My cousin became a welder and loved what he did. Too any people are pushed towards college for no good reason. Plenty get here and drop out due to the difficulty and lack of motivation (since they do t really want to be an X) and plenty of others get useless majors because they think a degree is essential for life when it really isn't. A degree is only important in some fields. A degree from college does not equate to success or happiness, it's just another step towards those things if you believe you will be happy working in those careers. People have to love what they do for a living or else they will hate living.

I was a college drop out due to my Uncle Sam. I eventually became a telephone tech which gave me a good career. My youngest uncle was an electrical contractor and did very well for himself. While working, I was always impressed with electricians on the job so if there is another life ahead, I want to become an electrician.

So cool! God is raising up some real leaders! I graduated high school in 1975, I watched these programs fade away. We are now desperate for their return. We encouraged white collar for so long, doctors and lawyers, we need these too, but if we don’t have builders, plumbers, electricians to build the buildings we live and work in......

Mike, not sure if this is the video to comment on. I worked in the shipyard for 16 years (family business as Pipefitters). I loved my job and was one of the youngest guys there (which bothered me). I’m now a Police Officer and our department, like many are short staffed. Physical labor and public service are in a horrible decline. Keep up the fight my friend!

Be a jack of ALL trades, you can master one... But know them all would be my sage advice for security in days to come, diversify you're potential to provide much needed services in a rapidly changing environment. In a world where things are engineered to be consumable one must find longevity

I really wish I would have had shop classes when I was in high school. All of those classes were gone when I went to high school. No metal, wood, or automotive classes. They had all been closed to save money. Yet they built a new science building with all sorts of gadgets we weren't allowed to used. They thought we would break them. Really sucked.

Idaho teens should avoid college and learn a trade. Service jobs can't be replaced by software. Painters, roofers, drywall, plumbing ,electrical, masonry the list goes on. Builders are short on labor. It's the perfect opportunity to get high school kids a summer job in the home building trade. Give them the same pay as the adults. I would recommend getting “Mike Rowe” involved. This could be an opportunity of a lifetime.
