Perhaps Delonte West isn’t the best player the NBA has ever seen, but he was dedicated to the sport and a hard worker on and off the court. His dream of becoming a professional basketball player began when the Boston Celtics chose him as the 24th overall pick in the 2004 draft. But over the course of a few years, he went from being loved by fans for his sense of humor, to being ridiculed about his personal struggles.

Mental illness is not a joke and does not discriminate. The sad part is that Delonte took care of his family and friends. He hit a bump on the road and the same people he financially supported, couldn't even turn around and help him. So sad.

This is such a sad story. I hate that everyone used him for his money then was nowhere to be found when he really needed the help. I'm glad that everyone is acknowledging mental health is a serious thing that, possibly, affects us all in one way or another. I live in Dallas, TX and haven't heard anything else about him. Kudos to Mark Cuban for reaching out to him because he didn't have to do that.

Mark Cuban is a great guy. Someone you call if there’s a problem and noone else can help. I wonder what Delonte‘s wife is doing and if he’s still married. Must also be hard for her but why is he running around the streets by himself if he has a wife and kids.

Nobody ever calmed his inner child. Nobody made him feel safe. Nobody made him feel like he belonged. He wanted friends and love so badly he was willing to buy it, and even those people turned their backs. Instead of celebrating his talents, They started rumors about him, they outcast him. God my heart breaks for him.

@@patssoxcelticsbruinsfan9116 I feel what you're saying. However, the other side of this is... the sports industry bank, bet, and bargain, over young men of color and their incredible talents. These folks will purposely choose at risk youth or naive youngsters and their families and use them to make money- not teaching them financial literacy or business acumen, and discard them the moment problems arise. I see it on a HS travel ball/AAU level. Yes, adults must be accountable for their lives and actions, but this world and industry starts the grooming process in the adolescent stage. Ish is WILD and parents stand by and watch for the 💰 and possibilities! All I'm saying is.... don't believe everything you hear or SEE.

Well done to Mark Cuban. This is what kindness looks like. This was a professionally and sensitively crafted report. Thank you. Thank you sooooooo very much for your wonderful and very truthful post . Sometimes we have to step back and think about the fact that ANY one of us or our children could easily fall down on our good fortune and this has nothing to do with riches ,wealth, big houses or fancy cars. No one's perfect and no one is beyond needing a helping hand mentally, physically or emotionally. We ALL make choices that we have to contend with regardless of our situation but as outsiders looking in if you're not willing to help your fellow man .. then let's not go above and beyond the call of duty to tear them down. Mark Cuban is a great example of a great Samaritan who came to this young man's rescue . He looked beyond this young man's negative history and offered him something that money couldn't buy.......... A 2nd CHANCE. Have a very wonderful Blessed day Ngum & once again thank you for your priceless post.

We sold our townhouse in 2006 to a female cop he was dating. He showed up to our closing with her and we had no idea who he was, but he was the nicest guy I've ever met. We took a lot of pics with him once his girlfriend at the time told us who he was. It really saddens me that he struggles so bad with these demons! Please Lord heal Delonte's mind!

Man this touched me. It's so messed up to see this happen to someone who have a good heart and really wanted to succeed. We live in a cruel world and being in the spotlight, it's hard to deal with normal problems and the media will take anything and run with it to make money no matter the harm it may cause to person. Man I just pray that he keeps his head up and find some type of peace and happiness. Time may be past for playing basketball but hopefully he's surrounded by a loving family and his kids.. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

His story is so heartbreaking! The NBA honestly should invest in their players mental health and should have therapists on hand just like they have physical therapists on hand for injuries. I'm sure them Physical therapists Gets paid, So if they get Therapist on hand, Who's to say the NBA will Talk to them? So the On Hand Physical therapists ain't going get Paid and wasting their Time, Now what them NBA players should Do is find their own Therapist (That they're trust) And start going There
@rrg
@rrg 2 жыл бұрын
@@KikiW89 Apparently some of the players are taking advantage of the NBA’s Mind Health mental health program and have spoken out publicly about their own struggles. But others are cautious about using the service because depending on what they divulge to the program, they could get benched from the game and their team can have access to all the info they discuss with therapists. That creates a higher chances of their personal and sensitive info getting leaked to the public so we don’t blame them for being cautious. Getting an off-site therapist seems to be the solution but if they’re playing and on the road most of the year, we’re sure it’s difficult to find time to schedule those sessions.

The sad thing is that no one wants a liability. His mom will say he's a grown man and she can't take care of him the rest of his life. The NBA will say they're just an employer, and not responsible for him for the rest of his life. His girlfriends will not put up with his outbursts and erratic behavior when the glory of being with an ex-NBA player finally wears off. Even Mark Cuban had to cut him off at some point and make sure he was holding down a job and being treated for his issues. He's a grown man. No guarantees that Delonte will stay on his medication there either, but that choice is up to him. Damn shame how the family was squatting in the house under foreclosure while Delonte was out in the streets pan handling. SMH One of the biggest issues with bipolar disorder is that part of the illness where they are always in denial about needing to stay on medication. That's what ruins their friend, family and job relationships, ultimately rendering them homeless.
@DiaSol7
@DiaSol7 Жыл бұрын
Perhaps if these so-called “therapists” would stop throwing prescription drugs that the side effects alone are worse than the mental illness, and start addressing the root of the trauma, sometimes dating back to childhood, people would have a fighting chance suffering mental health issues. There’s endless options for healing trauma and prescription drugs that numb people out, cause them to be more unstable and depressed to the point of suicide, AIN’T IT. Harmaceutical Drugs AINT IT.

This story is about so much more than just financial literacy though. The guy was tormented and laughed at for being different and having mental disorders. What do you think that will do to a person with a mental disorder? Will only make the problem MUCH WORSE!!! Which is exactly what happened. He spent alot of money helping family and friends, who only abandoned him when he needed them most. While having some financial literacy may have helped some of the problems, the mental problems would still be there. And those mental problems are the biggest ones in his career and life.

His childhood was the root of everything and no matter what he did or how far he went, his childhood found him over and over again. It got worse and worse the more money he got. If we do not educate people on healing from traumas, we are literally putting bandages on things that need surgery. I wish as a community we were better to him. When he said he was tired of people laughing at him all I heard was his inner child begging to stop being bullied. This literally almost made me cry. Society collectively failed him by poking fun at him while he was already mentally ill. I hope we can learn to be more compassionate to illnesses that we cannot see

It is a German word that describes the pleasure that some feel when witnessing or learning of the failures, troubles, downfall and misadventures of another person. The word is SCHADENFREUDE. It is pronounced shot-in-fraud-a. Although dictionaries do not include this thought in their definition, I am 100% without a doubt certain that there are plenty of people who practically experience waves of ecstasy when someone they’ve hated aka envied dies. Don’t get it twisted, envy is a caustic emotion. It makes people want to deprive the envied person of any goodness in their life because the envier has judged the envied as not worthy. In the fog of delusion where the envier lives, the envied has no redeeming qualities. The envied does not deserve what they have because the envier doesn’t have it. The envier surmises that the only reason the envied has what rightly belongs to them is because they cheated or slept their way to the top. Any variation on that theme will do nicely. Since the envier wants to deprive the envied of any joy in their life, death itself would be the ultimate deprivation in their minds. There is a word for what you’re saying and it’s a German word. The word is

This man was legit the only real crush I ever had growing up. Started watching basketball when he was on the Cavs. I am heart broken to see whats become of him. God bless him.

What people fail to realize in this world that mental illness can have it root cause from being demonically possessed. If medication isn't helping then more is needed. I am sure this gentleman has had the best therspists that the NBA could offer at the time. I think he needs more. Until he is helped by the only true God in heaven, he will only be practicing undergoing treatments. Only God can help him rid himself of what's really going on with him. I am not talking exorcism. I am talking about accurate knowledge of His written word the Bible. It worked for me.

@@KingRQ95 you dont have to know a person to have a crush on them, especially as child. You can just think someone is cute and develop a crush on them, gosh stop acting dense.

That was my thoughts, he's brought all his family houses cars etc etc but when he hits rock bottom they aren't willing to help him back out? Surely he could get some sort of coaching or mentoring job once he sorts himself out!!!

Please pray for him, I have bipolar and it's such a hard thing to cope with. We can't give up on people even if it seems they've given up on themselves, especially with mental health. Thank you for being so compassionate with this video. Guys with the power of collective pray and help hopefully he and others suffering can be saved. Don't judge, mental health does not discriminate against and it's not a joke. I just prayed for him 🙏

From people who he called family, to heart breaks, to horrible decisions and downfall of his career, all of that attributed to his mental health. I don’t think anyone could have been that strong to endure so much and not have it affect them. This is sad. When he needed someone, he had no one not even his ex wife. Poor guy so tragic

This man had other issues that are bigger, but financial literacy is such a powerful thing. There's really no reason why he ever should/should've been broke. Zero reason.
