Real Royalty

Жыл бұрын

Great Fulford is a Grade I listed manor house near Exeter in Devon. Set in 3000 acres, Great Fulford is home to Francis and Kishanda Fulford, previously seen on Channel 4 in The F***ing Fulfords in 2004. The future of Great Fulford is hanging in the balance. Parts of the house haven't been touched for decades and other parts are starting to crumble.
With the income from the estate and tenanted farms going towards paying off borrowings, the house must start to pay its own way. Simon believes that the huge formal rooms and recently renovated bedrooms mean that the couple are sitting on a goldmine. But will they listen to Simon's advice, or will the couple's forceful personalities leave them at loggerheads?

And my impression too. I wonder how the expert became involved? Did the TV company go and set it up? They seem the sort of people who'd tell their acquaintances that, 'Oh yes, we had some businessy sort of chap in but he was useless. Where did their ancestors get money to build houses like this? I guess from the commonwealth countries. Looting Africa and India for their diamonds and gold. Now their children cannot afford to maintain the properties. Just like the UK as a country is going bankrupt because no more slaves money and taxes from colonized countries.

Something tells me that Kishanda is deliberately overpricing her rooms to avoid having strangers in her home. It probably doesn’t matter if the place is starting to fall apart at her hands and her husband's as the process will be complete at the hands of her offspring. You simply can't make enough money to maintain a property of that size sitting around drinking, eating and partying, which is about all the husband is capable of or prepared to do. The only thing that will save this house is a plan and a work ethic.

@@reecemacaulay1690 He wouldn’t be capable of growing a gooseberry let alone run a farm. In any case, the profit from running an underinvested mixed 300 acre farm [one of the 3000 total] would probably be near zero cash-flow, which would contribute nothing. At least it currently should provide an income of between 15,000 and £30,000 per annum for very little re-investment. No, these people are literally ‘landed gentry’ who are rapidly and unavoidably going to the dogs. Perhaps one of their sons or daughters, the most committed, hard working and cleverest, not necessarily the eldest, might turn it around? They certainly couldn’t do much worse because if he or she did run it into the ground, it would only be a matter of timing between the parents doing so or them.

When I was visiting relatives in England, we visited a large manor house. But they have a Japanese Tea House by the winding river diverted for their pleasure in the 1800s…(but it runs properly and ordinary once it leaves their property!) and Gardens to go around, and a Plant Shop and cafe. Charles 11 hid there for about 5 days after the Battle of Worcester when he had to then flee to France until called back in 1660 to be King. While staying at Heale, he rode over to see Stonehenge.

@@gracec3418 Whether someone 'deserves' something is a judgement which is the domain of judgemental people who arrogantly and all too eagerly think they are entitled to pronounce such judgement over another. Whether help is 'useful', that is another type of judgement, it is limited to judging whether the enterprise has a chance of being successful at all. By using the word 'deserve' people betray their own judgmental psychology. These people just ended up looking like spoiled snobs. Very sad when someone came and put their time and energy into helping them. You deserve an award for the calmest reaction to people who acted like they were way above everyone. They reminded me of 2 spoiled kids pretending they have so much while their house crumbles around them. It would seem that they would have to pay people to play the part of their friends as no one in their right mind would want the misery of hanging out with them. Usually I'm not so critical but treating someone trying to help them so awful really annoyed me. Loved that you told them you saw right through their games. I think they wanted a free house make over right from the start never planning on making a business. They had better start packing up their chipped cups and dusty paintings before it is auctioned off for back taxes.

Most of the episodes I watched the owners and their offspring put LOTS of effort into trying to make their mansions or castles help generate income to help pay the debts and restoration. They are usually elderly but still give it their all. Water damage and mold are usually what ruins their homes and the exorbitant prices of just the regular day to day upkeep...but they don't usually sit back and do nothing to help maintain their homes. It's often heartbreaking to watch them struggle and struggle they do. Keeping the tradition alive is very important. Shouldn't hate on them because they inherited something you could never afford. Just started this episode but this couple seem a bit different from the others. I'm sure the distress they feel of not being able to maintain their home causes a lot of friction between them.

It was so great to see Francis slam the door in Kishandas face, as Simon called her the “petulant child”. If ever there was a spot on description of a person. They act as if they are spoiled yet the state of that manor crumbling around them shows otherwise. It’s a shame that the house is in their hands. They definitely will not be leaving the house in better shape than they found it. 800 years. 800 years of sweat, toil and work by artisans through the years. 800 years is a testament to how great the ones who built it must have been. These people have done such a disservice to their family’s history. I think in the end the kids will either sell it off on their parents old age or after their death. I think this is the last generation of this family in this house, all because they are too arrogant and unwilling to change their thinking in any meaningful way. As for Simon. That man has far more patience than most. I would have walked out much sooner. But, I bet when Simon thinks back on Francis slamming the door in Kishandra’s face, I bet he does so with a smile on his face.

I can remember being in undergrad, and I stayed with a family similar to this family. Though I was in France, they refused to realize the Manor or Home was falling down around them. The family was nearly bankrupt and the couple refused to get some form of employment. She kept saying she was from the family or out of the lineage of Bonaparte and she was getting some money. Now there was money for Champagne, Gin, and the best cuts of meat, yet the home needed so much work. IDK....I love this channel!

I was surprised at simple, regular house upkeep that had not been done. The window frames could have been scraped and painted over the years, just to protect them, if nothing else. Also, maybe the kids could have been taken out of boarding school, so at least the broken windows and some cracking concrete could be repaired. What surprised me most, however, was Francis' visit to the other thriving enterprise. Instead of seeing real solutions, he saw that his room charge of 275 pounds per night was reasonable. Wow!

She acts like a spoiled child and not like the lady of the manor. She is a good hostess only with her friends and not with guests. Rest of the family also doesn't care for the estate clearly. It sure looked to me like they were hamming for the camera, being dense, refusing to work if it's "not fun". One suspects they must have learned something, because they do have a website for their hotel/events venue but there is no telling how successful they are. I'm sure they receive some sort of payment to appear on the show as well.
