They're one of the most magnificent animals on the planet. For years, they've been a threatened species in Alberta. But grizzly bears will soon be hunted again after the UCP government quietly lifted a 20 year ban. In this episode, we investigate changes to the Wildlife Act allowing "problem" bears to be targeted by sport hunters, and learn what wildlife biologists and other experts think about Alberta's plan.
3:15 | Renowned wildlife photographer John E. Marriott tells us why he thinks Alberta's making a big mistake allowing selective grizzly hunts.

I have hiked in Alberta for many years and often went back to the same places. There are noticeably many more bears now and they are not your friends, especially when they lose their fear by not being hunted. Too many city greenies don't know this and foam with outrage even under this misleading headline. Maybe they should be placed in an enclosure to camp with "problem" bears and learn the hard way.

A grizzly bear needs a large natural area to live in and survive. Once you have more bears they either have compete with the other bears or move into areas where humans live. Neither option is of benefit to the bears. I'm sure we can come up with a number of bears that natural parks, wilderness areas etc; can support and that should be our goal. If the bear numbers go beyond that there should be a way to cull them etc; to keep them within these numbers

Absolutely, took a lot of training at the mill by guys that were hired by the govt to investigate bear maulings, etc. the stories they’d tell a guy about grizzlies would make your hair stand on end. But they don’t share space well with other bears unless there are good feeding sites like salmon streams.

I understand some bears will cause trouble , People are hiking and camping more then ever and will probably enter there domain more often , I feel that officers should always be used to handle these bears not a draw opened to hunters , People will always love bears or hate bears , we need to protect these bears at all cost

Dining on moose steaks and listening to this. First, it sounds like the proposed system is open to abuse. Quite possible. Second, im on 43rd minute of this and NDP lady started her speech. That show supposed to be unbiased, and present different opinions, huh?

Baloney, nothing is 'hushed up' on social media, in every town and city people go batshit crazy over bears. The news has covered numerous stories of bear attacks and has no problem reporting attacks. There has been about four attacks per year a few fatal, but the media has no problem with reporting bear attacks, never has. If its violent, the media is all over it.

As a rancher, I say good thing they open it back up, we’ve got way too many of them up here right now in northern Alberta. Never should have totally shut the hunt off in the first place. Once bears become used to people and livestock, they are a danger to everyone. These problem bears need to be harvested, otherwise they train their cubs to be problems as well. Might as well get some revenue for the province out of it at the same time.

The approach I would like to see is a proactive management plan. Mix in tons of nutritious tofu to train bears to an area and teach them the words ‘go home.’ Build them lots of cool dens. Manage them brilliantly now so future geniuses figure outunlock whatever potential beyond a circus performer but as for now? Tranquilize them WTF Some dogs can learn as many as 120 words? How many can a bear learn? Maybe the big sob can learn enough and get a job 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

it's about time to teach all bears some respect for human's, Canada and America are about the only country's in the world where you can be arrested for killing a man eating predator like bears and big cat's in self defense when they were hunted they feared people now they come looking for treats
