rear brake conversion for 15" drag wheels: The UglyTruck Returns

UglyTruck needs more traction! We're installing 15" drag wheels and tires out back, but in order to allow the wheels to fit, we need to modify the rear brakes. I am using a kit from 1320 wheels that allows the use of calipers, pads, and rotors from an older silverado, and they are a more compact design which means a 15x10 drag wheel can fit out back. I am going to be running Mickey Thompson ET Street R tires and 15x10 Weld wheels. The million dollar question is, how long is the stock 10-bolt gonna last with the sticky tires?
I feel like the Uglytruck can do a much quicker 1/8 mile run that it did last time, and my goal is to get it into the 7 second (1/8 mile) range with the current power level, and I feel like between the Circle D torque converter, the Caltracs, and the Atomic Fab/Viking shocks we have a chance of making that happen! Next week, we're headed to Idaho to go to Sage Raceway to try our luck with the UglyTruck.

U can also run stock rear disc 99-03 with a 15" rim. U just need to change the stock calipers to 4x4 rear s10 caliper. This way you don't loose your e brake

The weakest parts of an 8.6" 10-bolt are the spider and axle gear teeth weather an open, gov-loc, or posi carrier. TrueTracs don't have that weakness so the next things to watch are housing deflection and axle twist. If the housing is buckling under the torque you'll see it as a fluid leak - the cover bolts will start walking themselves out. Cast covers help but only marginally. Regarding axle twist, even with the 9.5" 14-bolt semi-floater, the 454SS guys (only version of that that ever came 5x5" lug pattern) have problems with twist running drag radials on stock axles, and you'll see it at the spline ends. If you pull the axles again it might be a good idea to run a paint pen down the length of each one before reassembly, for future inspection.

You’re being misleading. State the fox for this. An axle truss? What if swapping a different axle isn’t an option?

My very humble and uneducated opinion: The Stepside is running great in the current set up with ALL the work that you put into it. With that said: I would hate for all that work to go to waste (figuratively), by tearing out the 4.8 to put a bigger engine in it. Instead, probably getting a different stock Stepside and putting in the engine of your choice (more than likely bigger than 4.8; perhaps a 6.0 or 6.2) and then building that one to beat the AWD Stepside. On a different note: I was glad to see Matt from Matt's Off Road Recovery link up with you. I were always wondering, because you all live around the same area (at least the same state), if you had communication with them. And I say "with them" because aside from Matt and his channel there are around ten more creators collabing with each other like a big happy family. As always, great video and can't wait what you bring next.

I run an 05 Silverado with about the same torque with same cal trac and rear shock setup. When I stll had the 10 bolt with upgraded axles and limited slip with the stock drums and a flip kit to lower the rear on 17's with a MT ET Street R tire 305/45-17 no bead locks I got about 60 passes on it with a solid 1-2 shift on a prepped track before I destroyed a spider gear, cross shaft and carrier. With C-clips I had both axles try to walk out and it was pretty exciting and required a flat bed tow truck to get it home. I had wanted to go smaller brakes as well but I was holding out because it just makes sense to go to a 9" swap in this case and eliminate all of the potential problems at once. I wish I would have just started there instead of changing gear ratios, limited slip, seals, brakes, and welding on the new shock brackets just to have to start over but especially for guys who are running stock axles shafts you want to consider how many hard launches and 1-2 shifts you can do before you potentially loose a wheel and maybe it makes sense to spend twice as much all in to just do the swap instead of spending good money twice on the same parts. I got a Mosier direct fit 9" with 35 spline axles in just a few days with the Wavetrack and 1/2 screw in studs and Willwood drag brakes and only regret the money I wasted at the start of the project because I could afford it at the time.

Your builds are so clean and no detail left out... the ugly truck is really cool but that stepside is a ripper... let's see if the extra stall speed and tires help out. I can say even on a stockist motor or moded one of the biggest changes you can do and feel is a torque converter and gearing. People always get caught up on power numbers but getting it to the ground is equally important. Good stuff LT!

Honestly, i bet the 8.6 will be okay longer than most people think it will. You aren't leaving off of a transbrake, so even with a stall i dont think the shock load will be too horrible. I have seen a trutrac in an 03 lightning give up at 650lb ft so i think the weak link is there, but i saw a lot of street miles. Plus i dont remember if you upgraded the driveshaft, so that may pretzel before you have diff issues.

Always enjoy your vids and the journey here with the 2 trucks. A tip - when working on the brake system -- if you top up the reservoir with fluid and then block off the vent at the reservoir so air can not get INTO the top of the reservoir, virtually no fluid at all comes out the where ever you have things disconnected. Like putting your thumb over the end of a straw.
@LawrenceTolman
@LawrenceTolman 2 жыл бұрын
that's a good tip! it did make a big mess with brake fluid for sure

@@LawrenceTolman - Thanks LT; can't tell you how many times it's saved me SO MUCH trouble. Not only virtually no mess -- but no chance of emptying the reservoir and having to jump through the hoops trying to bleed/bench bleed the master cylinder. Sometimes it's as simple as putting a piece of tape over a tiny vent hole in the cap. Sometimes you can use a piece of plastic over the reservoir opening and then put the cap on. Just have to look at how the cap is vented. I've left the system (replacing calipers) open over several days -- nary a drop comes out.

LT, a friend of mine had a 454 CI big block with twin turbos in a C1500 Chevy with this 10 bolt. I don't think he ever broke that little POS! I was building gears at the time and I was hoping he would have me do a 14 bolt for it. I was surprised how well that 10 bolt held up. GM could at least have installed a 12 bolt from the big block Chevelle"s in the pickup's but they always cheaped out, IMO. Slicks though, is another factor obviously, so good luck. I'm enjoying the videos!!
@LawrenceTolman

yeah, when the truck just spins the tires, there isn't a tremendous amount of load going through it, but sticky tires, a heavy truck, and lots of torque will be sure to find a weak link if there is one

The coolest one I have seen do that was a diesel rock crawler that had a SC running fast enough to boost at idle for instant throttle and when the engine needed more air at RPM's the downstream turbo took over and boosted higher as he had a bypass on intake between SC and Turbo when SC could not keep up and it just freewheeled!!!! very cool setup!!!!🤔

When comparing results something that would be interesting is, is the 4.8 really making 580 at the wheels or is more of how the power kicks in and also the step side may have a weight advantage. I know the awd is why the ets and 60ft are lower, but due to the fact that you have a supercharger vs a turbocharger, they make power differently, the supercharger is right there immediately while the turbo has to spool so a lower power number supercharged engine can be with a higher power turbo engine. It is interesting to think about.

Your new rear brakes looks like GMT400 K1500 4WD front brakes and it depends are their STD or F44 code HD Brakes ? Standard brakes are with about 2" pistons and F44 HD brakes are with 2 - 15/16" pistons. Awesome brake swap, but you don´t have e-brakes anymore...and it´s quite weird to me, because it would be illegal truck in here.

Pro tip: pinch off the brake flex hose upstream of where you're working (frame to axle) to prevent brake fluid dripping while you're flaring the line.

That's a hack tip. You damage the hose if you pinch it off.

I’d look into the 2020+ 1500 brakes for the front. They’re a HUGE upgrade

I was just wondering if you had a link to that flaring tool. I’ve never seen one like that.

This is little bit off topic, but i was wondering, how much power the awd center "diff" can handle. I want some day build copy of red tide obs, but turbo or supercharged version.

no idea what its rated for, but there have been several 1,000 hp silverado SS trucks that report the transfer case holds up great.
I'm an IDIOT for modifying this truck (but I'm gonna do it anyway)
