This is THE video I've been searching for. Reason is my weapon of choice but I have always HATED the sound quality. The mastering suite made my music sound fuller and more complete but I always found that the more sounds I added the more murky and muddled my sound got. This is shows me exactly why!!!! Thank you a million times over

VERY WELL DONE! I'm good with EQ but never knew U could get a Wah effect like that. U Da Man!

Out of many Reason tutorials, this one was the best. You explained everything well and you were not boring, as the other ones that almost sleep while explaining. 5/5 from me, but one suggestion: Lower the volume of ur speakers just a little bit. It killed my ears at some parts, because of the volume difference between your voice and the speakers. Keep it up:)

Great guide. One thing though: Human voices are most present between 300 Hz and 3.4 kHz. That's also the frequency range submitted by a telephone at +/-3 dB. The warmth of a voice resides around 150 Hz, Definition (for understanding language properly) at 400 Hz approx (300 - 500 Hz) and Presence ca. at 3.5 kHz (3 - 6 kHz). Furthermore: boosting wide, cutting tight, that's right. If you want something to sound *better*, cut. If you want something to sound *fatter*, boost. Just some hint.

Yeah, the twangy fast guitar part. Dick Dale is the musician you are thinking of. All his songs seem to sound like fast, single note surf music. Mine is Hawaiian in origin, so it probably shares some flavor.

As an engineer I was told less is more therefore EQ can over kill a song so be very gentle when you eq sounds also panning can help with seperation to compensate for EQ.

Wow, cheers! I'm in a band with two guitarists and they're constantly arguing about one being louder. Of course, he is louder, but maybe I can do this to them on the sly :)

I've got a quality MP3 on the website listed on my homepage - the song is called "Hale Noa", from the Hawaiian bar where I heard a group play it. It was such a powerful melody, I carried it around in my head for 3 years...

True. I demonstrated this in my "Visual Envelopes" tutorial and the "Live Performances" series, so I didn't think I would need to reiterate that! Thanks for the comment though.

Very good info Justin. This is the first one of yours I've seen and it's just great how you go over things. You have a good teaching eye for detail, and reiterating things people may have a tendency to forget after all they have to take in. :) One thing tho, maybe pan out a little with the camera next time so we can see what you are doing above, as we couldnt see all you were doing with some drop downs and some of the control knobs. But, have to say again. Love your teaching style. Keep up the great work. (Or should I say Fun hey?) Thanks for your time and effort ... Lee :)

Yes! Have your rhythm guitarist occupy the lower midrange, while your lead guitar should occupy the higher mids and treble. If you only have a 3-band EQ, have your guitarists offset their tone knobs accordingly. This has the same effect as a wide bandpass filter, and should do much to align your guitarists within the spectrum.

My rule = Don't BOOST with Reason EQ's... never ever! cut the rest out and turn up the volume with some (subtle sidechain) compression / how you like it / for your style.

Any major music store will have it or just go online and shop for the program. Of course you will need an interface to play it but if you go to a store like guitar center they can take you through it if your just beginning.

Mclass EQ has more options, but no inputs on the rear for CV. Typically it is used as a mastering utility, whereas the PEQ2 has more use as an effects device!

Tell your friend he's making a "filter" effect. A flanger throws certain frequencies off by PHASE - which you cannot do with just low mid and high. However, you can do it by playing two identical records just SLIGHTLY offset in starting time.

Hey man thank you! My tracks consistently sound so tiny whenever I export to audio. No matter how high the quality is when exporting (192,000/24 or 44,100 to 16 dither) the tracks consistently sound soooooo tiny. To even hear things normally I have to put my speakers on full blast in my car and on my phone just to hear the track. Other info, I just started getting back into producing and am still trying to learn a lot. The tracks sound fine when I listen to them while operating on the DAW/Reason 5 while connected tomy JBL Pulse 5s, or my cheap gaming headphones, or even my ghetto off brand earbuds. However, when I export the audio and play the music in my car there is a huge difference as well as on my phone's speaker (just a cheap iPhone 3se). I can't figure out what the heck is going on. I hope after watching your tutorial I'll know why this consistently happens.

You should also Lo cut most of your instruments to prevent your speakers trying to boost those levels that anyway is out of the human hearing range.

But, but -I read that tip in a sound engineer's guide! (I believe it would apply to the individual tracks, not the mix) What, then, do you recommend to solve the problem in this case? My viewers and I would surely like to hear your opinion!
