In this episode we explore some of the many reasons why corals die in the home aquarium. This is by far not a conclusive list as there are a huge amount of factors which can cause coral death.

while I'm in no doubt you know what you are doing, your corals look healthy. But.... before making educational videos you might want to be careful before stating facts that are not entirely true. Corals do not benefit from the red spectrum, to much red will stop them from growing. While you need some kind of control over phosphate and nitrate don't obsess over it, it will not stop your corals from growing. balance is key here. Having a high nutrient system is always better then to low. and if you do bring down nutrients do it slow same goes for the other way around. while being close to real seawater parameters is a good target to aim for, stability is more important. And Feeding corals is not that important it can help in some cases yes mostly amino acids because some corals don't make the necessary enzymes to build up their own amino acids like complex corals they mostly rely on only their zooxanthellae. it can help support them in stressful times.

Hello thanks for your comment, Corals which live in deeper water primarily use the blue spectrum yes also most corals do use blue spectrum for primary photosynthesis. However corals from shallower regions will use the red spectrum to some degree and even the green to some extent with accessory pigments in the zooxanthellae. I dont believe in using only blue because 99% of the coral only needs blue its best to provide 100% of what it recieves in nature. That being said too much red light can suppress coral growth and in extreme cases cause bleaching, so red light makes up a tiny portion of a corals needs but some species do require it and this video is a general coral video not on specific species of corals. With regards to feeding corals they do need feeding particulate food, it can make up to at least 10% of a corals diet. There is a great artical about coral nutrition on advanced aquarist about it www.advancedaquarist.com/2015/2/aafeature I 100% agree with you about system stability. Unfortunately i missed this part in my video. Thanks

Feeling a bit more like a lecturer than a KZfaqr on this one. Could have easily made this video over 1hr long but I had to keep it simple. If you want me to do some videos on some of the parts in more depth let me know in the comments.

Liked your approach to passing on your coral-knowledge! A review of the support equipments you have in place would be welcome also. The more details, the better !

I have a moselya colony dying my sandbed. I doubt there is to much light there but just in case I moved it to a lower light area. Stupidly this is the only coral I did not dip! (long story) I had my eye on it for weeks at my lfs and was fine and she is very picky but wont make that mistake again! Should I dip it now. if so with what? Iodine based or coral rx or both? It is losing skin! Great video BTW!

Hold on so if i just keep corals with no fishes and did normal weekly water changes i wouldnt have to worry about phosphates and nitrates?
@EverydayAquarist

Well not as much no. However corals themselves will produce a certain amount of Nitrates and Phosphate. Plus if you add any coral food etc that can increase it as well.

@@mikehawk9397 Scolys are tough because they are such slow growers, do you have a local forum where you can buy and trade, one site I go to has some great prices, depends on the person and their mood. Lots of resellers where I am from but good deals to be had. How did you do in the storm?
