Could it be possible that Toby started the killing well before moving to Costa Rica and actually went to Costa Rica to evade police because he was getting nervous? He never had much of a motive to leave the country.

I believe that if Toby was the Scranton Stranglers, the first time he ever strangled someone was before he left for Costa Rica in season 4 during the "Night Out" episode. I believe that after touching Pam's leg and suddenly jumps the fence, Toby's embarassment and rage causes him to stop and strangle someone for a sense of release and control. it also make sense that he would want to leave the country after killing someone. and alot of the times with serial killers, the most guilt happens after the first kill. I believe that while in the hospital for all those months, toby looked back at his first kill over and over again and decides that's the only time he ever felt in control and decides to go after that control

@YTNewsMasonR7 жыл бұрын
Well not in the room because then they would have heard Toby confess. Usually they have cameras that only pick up video and not sound and a panic button. The guards don't usually watch the monitors as they're in a totally different room, but if the panic button is pressed, the guards go in and assess the situation. Even if he didn't push the panic button, Toby would have probably screamed, or a chair would have fallen to the ground, the guard would have looked in and see the prisoner strangling Toby and then go in.
@alanat62927 жыл бұрын
thats cause he was in prison where there were guards so when the strangler tried he actually really hurt him when he had to go to the hospital and that was only for strangling him for a few seconds before the guards came so for a professional strangler he did a really good job for only a few seconds

@BoringGirlStuff7 жыл бұрын
I buy it. Toby is a meek man who isn't well liked and doesn't get a lot of credit because of his personality. A lot of serial killers want that recognition through media coverage, to become this infamous monster, as a way to feel important, special, immortalized, or respected. It would make sense that a guy like Toby could seek out the approval in such a way if he struggles socially and is otherwise looked over. His obsession with the Scranton Strangler could support this theory. On one hand, if he isn't the strangler, his involvement on the jury gives him a sense of importance and value he doesn't normally receive from others by being involved in such a high profile case, hence why he needs to talk obsessively about it and insert himself in the narrative. On the other hand, if he were the strangler, his obsession with the case further feeds into that feeling of self-importance similar to someone like the BTK killer, who reveled in his notoriety gained through media coverage. Being on the jury and further investigating the case for his book is also a way to control the story to keep himself from getting caught.

Just like Walter White from breaking bad. No one would expect a nerdy timid man like him to be a meth producer or a killer. Great synopsis, all the evidence fits and I can't see how the Strangler could be anyone other than Toby. I believe the showrunners are even confirming that Toby is the Strangler by having Michael Scott say that he loves the Strangler not realising it is Toby, which makes him paradoxically love and hate the exact same person. Given the several years of Michael voicing his hatred for Toby leading up to that moment, it seems like they had this idea from the start (or at least very early on).

Toby is definitely the Scranton strangler let's look at his life his ex wife divorced him and re-married and he doesn't see his daughter but most likely pays alot in child support. He works for HR, he's hated by his boss and other co-workers. The girl he falls in love with Pam Marry's Jim and has two kids, also do you notice he moves to Costa Rica after Kevin mentioned to Jan they found the body of one of the Scranton strangler's victim? Do you notice the killings completely stop then restart when he moves back? Also I think everyone in the office knows he's the Scranton strangler but simply ignore it. The fact that he's always trying to convince anyone who listens that the man they convicted is actually innocent proves he's the actual killer and his colleagues most likely know it's him because in the episode The Chase he calls the office and his number pops up on the screen.

Assuming the role of advocatus diaboli here: - The car is most likely just a reused asset to save money and there is no larger meaning behind it. Aside from that. it is not even Tony´s car in the show. - If Tony was the Scranton Strangler, he would have no reason to draw suspicion away from George Howard Skub like he did, since that would potentially endanger him. - He is conflicted with his role as part of the jury and the verdict because he confesses that he was peer pressured into following the guilty verdict of the rest of the jury despite having doubts of Skub´s guilt, and not because he is the SS. The fact that he was peer pressured into voting "guilty" by the other jury members is very much in line with his overall character and not a sign of remorse for supposedly finding an innocent man guilty. He is probably unable to get over it because him being a part of the jury was his moment in the light and even then he was not able to stand up for himself. - He shows absolutely no sign of physical aggression (no matter the circumstance he has to endure) during the entire show. - We do not know anything about the victims of the SS, so assuming they are some sort of proxy for Toby to lash out against because of Pam´s engagement or Michael´s abuse is an assumption without the slightest form of proof or indication. - Tony is absent during a lot of episodes, but the SS does not strike during the overwhelming majority of them. In fact, we only learn directly about one attack and can deduce from the headline that there must have been at least another. - Tony is most likely attacked by Skub in prison because he told him that he was on the jury that sentenced him to death.

I do agree with the theory that Toby is the Strangler, some of your points are very well thought out! However, you definitely lost me at the car chase scene. I've read some of the other Toby theories out there and i think collectively you nail it. The car swaps seem pretty valid, Toby likely sold his first car before he leaves for Costa Rica, purchasing a new one on his return to Scranton. This car is likely the green one spotted in the chase scene and parking lot. I believe Toby dumps that car after the police chase, which would explain the third car scene at the farm. The following events still baffle me: the false suspect who is imprisoned, how Toby impossibly ends up on the jury... The idea of Toby pathetically admitting his guilt to the real strangler and being subsequently strangled, is not hard to imagine though There are several odd factors noticeable about the car chase scene. Toby is not there, yet his computer is left on. Did Toby leave his computer on this webpage on purpose? Perhaps Kelly noticed the chase and told the rest of the office to come and watch, which would explain why they are all in the annex at once. I definitely subscribe to the theory that Toby is calling the office from his car to confess to the rest of the staff, knowing they are watching his computer. It always seemed odd to me that Michael picks on Toby so significantly, considering he likes just about everyone he meets. It's like Sgt. Doakes who can see through Dexter's mask. Also, his detective novel/podcast stories imply that the criminal in his story has a young, lady accomplice who joins in (Pam maybe?!). This sounds like Toby is writing about his own crimes in a fictitious detective fantasy. Anyway... my paranoia has ran dry and thats all i can think of. Peace x

In episode seven from season 6 called Mafia - Toby tells Michael "That's why they pay me the big bucks" in order to talk to Pam because Michael was seeing her mother, also Toby is most likely calling his own phone because he knows his own extension - in the episode when Jim was seeing Katey and Pam tells him "you could give your phone extension, for obvious reasons". What i always thought was interesting was how Toby reacted when Michael framed him for marijuana possesion, he kind of freaked out a bit more then the calm HR rep we are used to since a normal guy that had nothing to fear would just be casual about it. Also when he is asked if he has any weapons he reaplies with a: WHAT ?!. That is all I have for now

Great theory but I dont think they intended to create an Easter egg or mystery out of it so the writers probably didn't attempt lead that idea on.

and he definitely would have killed Michael

You forgot to mention another clue. When Robert California's wife was briefly hired she went to talk to Toby and he asked her for a few documents, including her passport, and she says "Who walks around with their passport?", and Toby replies "I do. I'm always ready for an adventure", which could mean he is always prepared to run away in case something goes wrong or he's discovered. There are too many coincidences. I think the writers planted all these details on purpose. ;)

Good video and up until yesterday night I didn’t believe Toby was the Scranton strangler however now I do and compared to some of the other videos I’ve seen you have some really good points

When I started watching this I thought this video would humorously depict how awkward and almost creepy Toby is but I now actually believe he was a Scranton strangler. I think your right, he started strangling after Costa Rica and major events in Pam's relationship caused him to strangle. However I believe he did not go to see George Howard Scub as a strategic move, but because he couldn't live with the gilt. Throughout the last few seasons he struggles to give himself worth, and its obvious that he is struggling with something, however I think most people believe this is guilt for not standing up for himself and chasing after Pam. Anyway, great vid!

An episode that you forgot to meantion was Season 2 Episode 22 "Casino Night" Toby beat Micheal in a game of cards and was interviewed afterwards. "It felt really good taking money away from Micheal. Gonna chase that feeling." -Toby

The phone thing is so stupid. If he was going to confess he would call the main number / Pam. Why would he call his own phone? Nobody else would answer it anyway. No family to call him? Um ... Rory?
@chamchamtrigger6 жыл бұрын
Not disputing this, but why did you say he had no family to call him when he at least has a daughter, a brother, and an ex-wife (who isn't family, but would definitely have reasons to call him)?

you suggest that his neck injury was the inspiration for strangling people, and then say that he probably strangled way before then
@NathanSawczak7 жыл бұрын
Noah M what I meant is that he strangled people before the first mention during the delivery. I still stand by the idea that his neck injury started it giving a year and a half time frame for the other stranglings to take place

Maybe Toby got away from the Police chase , and they captured the wrong car , thats why Toby says he believes that the guy in jail is innocent, and goes to secretly reveal himself to the innocent person in jail, and in return gets a strangled , a taste of his own medicine. ??

The theory at 5:35 is a popular one that doesn't hold up well. It could be a work call, Toby could simply give his extension to people that need to reach him. (Corporate, other HR people, ect.)

I feel it ironic that had a scene where he pitched his novel to Kathy Bates’ character, who is well known for starring in the movie Misery and is about her character kidnapping a famous writer.
