Ever since those Portishead folks in Bristol found the magic that happens when you pitch a drum sample down and bath it in gloomy reverb, Trip Hop has been one of the most popular genres for people learning to make beats. Trip Hop, boom bap type beats, lofi-hiphop and nujazz from the 1990s seems to still inspire trip hop 2021. When we got requests to cover Trip Hop in this tutorial series, we wondered what people were really asking for. Trip Hop is a sample-loop based genre that doesn't require too much production wizardry, if you don't' want it to... In this tutorial, however, we'll cover those basics but we'll also delve further into the sound design theory that lies behind those loops so that you can create your own custom Trip Hop sounds and beats. For the nerds: We'll get down to the nitty gritty and you'll even learn to emulate that signature trip-hop MPC 2500 shuffle.

I thought using loops was cheating, so I programmed my own using samples. I then thought using samples was cheating, so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming it was cheating, so I learned to play drums for real. I then thought using bought drums was cheating, so I learned to make my own. I then thought using premade skins was cheating, so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that is cheating, but I’m not sure where to go from here. I haven’t made any music lately, what with the goat farming and all.

Thank you, Propellerhead, for defending the use of loops and spreading some useful information on sampling. I remember when I started fiddling on Reason 4 back in the days, some people were like "Oh, but you used loops so it's less original/authentic than X". Yeah, entire genres are based on sampling and things other people have made. It's not like all violin players carve their own violin from a piece of wood picked up in the forest, or keyboardists manufacture their own keyboard. That kind of cliché ignorant elitism needs to stop. It really boils down to how ideas are executed. That's what ultimately marks the difference between just drag and dropping a loop and processing/manipulating the same loop.

I'm really digging this series of videos, and I really like how you handled this topic in particular. I think the mantra of "Just because something is complex doesn't always mean it's better" is a message that needs to be absorbed by ALL musicians of ALL genres. Complexity is a means to an end, not an end itself. Fans of your music didn't become fans merely because of the way you routed and processed your signal, or how many notes you managed to cram into a measure... they're fans because, to them, the end result sounds good and creates an emotional connection. Bah... all this trip hop has got me feeling deep and philosophical. Well played, Ryan! Carry on!

At the end, people don't care and won't notice if you used a loop or recorded drums yourself. I mean, when we hear our favorite hip-hop/electronic music songs we don't think about it

Propellerhead, i just want to say thank you. I've been recording and mixing rock, metal, and jazz for years but i'm just starting to get an ear for adding trip hop in the mix. I can play a trip hop beat on my set no problem, but was going to have to muddle through the processing end of things. This tutorial is so helpful that it looks like i'm going to go buy my 1st version of reason since 3.0. Well done gentlemen. You just made a sale.

I mainly want to produce trip hop. I already have a (midi-) keyboard and guitars and bass. What should I buy next? A synthesizer for some trippy sounds, a drum machine or a sampler/sampling and drum pads? Would you buy something else? It would be awesome to hear some hardware recommendations from a fellow trip hop fan
@adamkrasneski3679
@adamkrasneski3679 3 жыл бұрын
@@lk-gt9xv hey man hope ur producing is going well. kinda depends on ur desired outcome/setting. If its for producing recordings, u have everything u need with reason and ur midi keyboard. No need to buy anything else. If ur in a trip hop group, a synth or keyboard could add a nice touch to ur live sound, especially a keyboard w a rhodes sample. But man a good vocalist can really bring a live group to life. Portishead still a regular in my playlist. If ur a one man live show and u dont wanna use ur computer id probably go with a sampler w a sequencer and part mute function. That can get pretty pricey, but at the same time ur replacing members of a band w a piece of gear so i guess maybe its justified. Personally my favorite thing to do (working on trax at home) is slicing samples of flute, rhodes, and drums. Really diggin that see ya feel from chinsaku. Hope some of thats helpful man. Best of luck.
