People have been requesting we show a method for creating currently trending version of a classic sound: the Reese Bass - namely, the "Dirty" Reese Bass, which is characterized by heavy distortion, compression, and filtration. When it comes to dirt, grit, and nasty sounds, Malström is a fantastic tool for the job. So in this tutorial I'll show you one of the many ways you can approach this type of sound, while thinking out loud along the way so you can gain some insight into custom patch creation in the Reason Rack.

Pro-tip: Cut some frequencies from the 300-500 Hz range to clear up the muddiness that comes with reese basses :) Also using a notch-filter instead of a band pass can yield a more aggressive sounding reese :)

+Protostar Yes, both are true. There's a bazillion and 12 Reese methods but many of them go beyond the scope of a 10'ish minute video. I would love to talk about band splitting - resampling - incorporating FM, etc. But those will have to come in later videos. Thanks for giving people the EQ tip here via the comments! /ryan

In known this video is now 6 years old at the time of writing but it’s been incredibly useful. I used to use reason 15 years or so ago and back then I used to rely on a single synth in the rack to make each sound. If I wanted to mix two sounds together I’d just load up another single instance of a different synth instrument or a different sound patch and let them both play the same pattern on separate tracks within the sequencer. This video finally showed me how to make full use of the combinator to blend and create my own sounds within the rack and automate them using a single track in the sequencer. So many more options than I ever thought possible. Thanks.

When can we see VST Plugin functionality from Reason? I moved to Ableton recently but would love to use both, but Reason has to have VST!!!
@StopwatchRobert
@StopwatchRobert 8 жыл бұрын
+James Keanan Sigh... people have been barking up that tree for ages, and the result is sadly "probably never." It's a deliberate design decision to enhance stability and rack integration. Which personally, I hate. I adore Reason and would love to use it exclusively, but there are VSTs out there which just don't have a Prop Shop equivalent. So we're all stuck using ReWire, which just isn't as good as keeping everything in one DAW. Shame.

Yea, I love reason to bits, I've been using it for years, but the quality of my sound improve dramatically when I started using Ableton and VST. It's so sad to say but its the honest truth. Still use Reason to edit samples though, the NNXT sample editor it amazing! And Rewire works ok, but like you said, its not one DAW.

Ableton has such a fuller sound, in reason I would layer about 3-5 synths and it would still feel like it was missing something, its felt bland, flavourless. In Ableton, I layer 2 synths and it feels complete, its full, and it has flavour. Its hard to describe through words. Also the things I can do to samples in Ableton are outstanding compared to the sampling in Reason. I absoulutely love reason so much and also will because it was the first software I've ever used, but my move was strategic. And I honestly don't regret it. Many other producers have had Improved sound since changing. Deorro used reason when he was Ton!c, listen to how his sound has change. KSHMR used reason when he was Cyronizzy in The Cataracs, listen to how his sound has changed. Dj Dago used reason and look how his sound has changed since changing softwares. I'm not in anyway slating Reason or Propellerhead, I highly recommended them to anyone wanting to get into production. I just know that for me personally and for many other producers, Ableton has a more professional take on solid production and workflow. But their Interface and the layout/design/look will never match Reason's. Props to reason and users

Ehrm.What exactly does the audiomatic retrotransformer do?
@RyanHarlin
@RyanHarlin 8 жыл бұрын
+PauLtus B Audiomatic can be thought of sorta like the new trend towards photo filters which do a bunch of stuff at once to create a "mood" look for your photo. In the same way, Audiomatic has a ton of effect DSP under the hood that results in a series of mood sounds - giving your signal some vibe. In this case, Audiomatic enhances our bottom end most importantly but there's also an element of glue that it brings to our sound - which happens because of a complex philosophical reason relating to EQ's effect on phase relationships in sounds... but I'll spare you the nerdier diatribe.
@PauLtus_B
@PauLtus_B 8 жыл бұрын
***** "but I'll spare you the nerdier diatribe." Please don't :"). What I assume it's some compression and equalizing..?
@RyanHarlin
@RyanHarlin 8 жыл бұрын
+PauLtus B Okay but you asked for it!! We all know that Equalization is about boosting or cutting the amplitude of certain frequencies in a signal - and that boost isn't limited to that one frequency but rather a range of frequencies which surround that central point. And that range is either fixed (in the case of graphic EQ) or adjustable in the case of parametric EQ. But what does boosting or cutting frequency ranges actually do? In short, it alters the phase relationship of those frequencies and the way they interact with the frequencies adjacent to them. In other words, one abstract way to describe EQ is that it's a targeted phase manipulation of our signal. So why does EQ in the mastering phase of production often get referred to as "gluing a track together?" Well quite simply because when we EQ a master signal - like we are in this combinator by putting it on the mixer's output - we're applying the same phase relationships across every sound that is part of this signal. Suddenly all sounds share a common trait - the same phase manipulated EQ relationship. And to our ears, this commonly shared trait creates a more uniform sound that describe as glue. In visual photo editing, I often do a similar technique... adding a little "film grain" and color settings to a composite of multiple layers to visually trick our eyes into seeing the composite as one image. I'll forgive you if you stopped reading halfway through. ;)

***** Thank you! It's quite clear really. I just don't know the unit since I'm still using Reason 7.
@RyanHarlin
@RyanHarlin 8 жыл бұрын
+PauLtus B Yeah well if I can make an upgrade pitch... :) Audiomatic is a really awesome tool for giving sounds that glue. And yes, it's a whole host of stuff going on under the hood - EQ a multiple and various stages in the process, compression, ring modulation, transient shaping, and a ton of stuff that's beyond my comprehension. But rather than think of it like that, I always tell people to just think of it like Instagram. Do you like the way this suite of sounds impacts your signal... or this other one?

A video is excellllent :) I like it! But I get tired from that base sound already 2 years ago... The crap is just copied from song to song. Looks to Me, the TODAYs producers runed out from ideas. Cannot be hundreds of millions of songs sounds a same... Wauewahwah wouaaawahwahwahwah.... Is it music? For me, not. They just try to cover the weak musicality with overdosed base (noise) The club owners arlso hate it, because of the stress on the speakers. Just square, triangle signals with lot of noise.
