The original with Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine is regarded as a classic masterpiece and one of Hitchcock's best pictures. It's also considered one of Joan Fontaines greatest performances. If I'm not mistaken it was the performance that earned Fontaine her Best Leading actress Oscar which beat out her sister Olivia de Haviland and also destroyed their relationship as sisters. They were always fiercely competitive as sisters but when Joan beat her sister and won the Oscar for best actress that was then end of their relationship as sisters and friends. Olivia famously said "Dear God I've lost prestige to my own sister!" But I can't wait to see this remake. It's always been one of my all time favorite pictures.

i think it shows a good preogression. it starts out super rich and warm like a sweet love story is unfolding, but as we progress, it becomes stark blues, grays, and whites that are grating on the eye and lend to an overall uncomfortableness and uncanniness. I dont think this movie is necessarily going for a classic film noir vibe, i think its a lot more embracing contemporary film palettes that feel unsettling and supernatural while unpacking the disturbing behavior of people. and warm doesn't necessarily mean comfortable either, overwhelming warm and oversaturated palettes can be very stifling and uncomfortable. Just my 2 cents!

I'm not sure if I'll be able to watch this. Joan Fontaine brought a kind of vulnerability and insecurity to the role she played that I don't see here. And Laurence Olivier played Maxim as smug, condescending, and somewhat cold and distant. Don't know if I can get into a reimagining of this story. I do think Kristen Scott Thomas as Mrs. Danvers could be interesting, though.
@kelseyk5303 жыл бұрын
@@gorey4more837Agreed. Hitchcock nailed Rebecca (1940). I've read the book twice. Fontaine was perfect...very young, naive, mousy, unsure and insecure (due in part of Hitch's instructions to alienate her and the fact that Olivier didn't particularly like her as he wanted his wife Vivien Leigh cast...she is what I imagine Rebecca to be instead). I liked someone's suggestion of Rufus Sewell. Still very handsome but older and age appropriate as Armie is too young for this and is no Olivier to pull an older Maxim even though Olivier was 10 years younger in real life than Maxim was in the book. But then someone a bit older than Lily James as it gets a bit creepy otherwise. Olivier played older and distinguished but he was only 10 years older than Joan Fontaine. In the book she was barely 20 or early 20s and he was in his mid 40s...don't think that would go down in today's Hollywood society. And there aren't any comparable actors like Oliver to play Maxim older despite being younger himself. And I adore KST. But Judith Anderson as Mrs. Danvers was so creepy and iconic...she was robbed of a Oscar win (though nominated for supporting.) And another star, in George Sanders, playing the delectably slimey cousin of Rebecca. He was most fantastic as Addison DeWitt going toe to toe with Anne Baxter (and Bette Davis) in All About Eve.

the trailer is so goood props to the trailer maker and music. i watched the 1940s and 2020 both sucked. the story is boring af, the 1940 is like comedy the set looked fake, the music dun dun dun. jane eyre is miles better. at least the 2020s version tried to be a thriller the trailer is so good it made it seems the movie is dark, complicated, twisted, gothic from music.

@@rozenart5768 I saw the black and white version of Rebecca and it was really good. I didn't even mind that they tweaked the way that Rebecca was killed. My mom and I both love this book, and I'm already a little unsure if this movie will live up to it. But I guess we'll see. It may surprise me.

Especially all the “Hitchcock remake” comments 😅. I get that people love that adaptation, but “the original” is the novel and this is not a Hitchcock remake but a new adaptation of the book, which might make a difference.

I wish them the best of luck, it looks amazing. The cast is exceptionally good. That being said, I think Hitchcock’s version will probably still be considered the best when all is said and done. Still, I always enjoy seeing a remake if there is just the smallest chance they can show honor to the original.

The 1940 Hitchcock film was so perfect, especially the casting, that they must be ambitious to attempt a remake. In the first, I actually found the hinted love of Crawley for Maxim to be elegantly tantalizing -and wonderfully portrayed by Reginald Denny. And, of course, the not so subtle love of Mrs. Danvers for Rebecca - superbly played by Judith Anderson. Tough competition.

I hate when people get mad about remakes/adaptations without even watching them but dear God, everything about this feels wrong. It's too bright, the visuals look like a run of the mill Nicholas Sparks film. That's just not the atmosphere of Rebecca or of Daphne du Maurier for that matter. Armies Hammer is good but casting him as Max makes little sense. That's just not the energy Max gives. Laurence Olivier looked subdued and exhausted and though with what you couldn't tell. And age plays into that too. Unless they change the plot I don't get why they'd cast a younger actor. I don't know, it seems like one of those remakes for the sake of it kind of things but I genuinely hope I'm wrong.

Anna is spot on. The BBC remake in 1997 was fantastic; Unfortunately Mr. Hammer is no Jeremy Brett, who always had a smoldering intensity. It is Hammer's lack of intensity that makes the miscasting so glaring. Maxim de Winter has to be like a coiled spring. What's really the trippy part about the BBC 1997 version, is that woman playing Ms. Danvers was his ex-wife! wow is that something! Lilly James is usually made to pretty, i wonder if they toned her down and made her more plain with less makeup. The whole thing however boils down to Danvers, because she has to be weird. Kristin is of course a great actress and can do anything.

The protagonist is supposed to be intimidated by Rebecca's beauty and glamour and be plain by comparison, but sure, cast Lily James 🤦

Well Joan Fontaine was pretty too in the original.
@lilychu89123 жыл бұрын
Well to a large degree, Rebecca is a psychological novel and besides the usual Hollywood demands, it just shows that how you view yourself and others perceive you can really be a distortion of reality. So I'm not put off they cast a traditionally beautiful woman. Emilia Fox in the BBC version was also lovely and Lily James is a reasonably good actress too.

I’m generally not pleased by the choice of actors / actresses, I totally agree with you. I read the book and this seems more like some weird Hollywood Adaption with a bunch of skinny people

So Rebecca is one of my most favorite books of all time. I think they nailed it with the colors and atmosphere. I always pictured the time they spent in Monte Carlo to be sunny and warm and then turns like to grey, Gothic feel once they get to Manderly. I wish the actor casted as Max was older or made the person portraying the main protagonist a bit younger because the age difference was a thing in the book.
