The ZR1 had a 'vallet' mode which would close off the butterflys in the second intake runners to reduce power when the car was left with 'friends' or the valet so they wouldn't abuse it. Those motors were AWESOME in the 90s, but quickly got overtaken by the LS motors. Got a real peice of art right there.

I remember the ZR1 having a Valet cutoff that could be activated on the dash. It cut the power and would not enable higher revs. Look it up.

Zr1's has an additional key for full power that opens up the secondary runner's.

One of the best tips for modding ZR1 C4 is pull that intake and remove the valves and port the transition area into the heads. C4’s aesthetics are really helped by lowering and going to 18-19” wheels. SHOES AND STANCE, BABY!

Matt please please please do yourself a huge favor when you start doing power adders. Get your ZR-1 the Linginfelter performance intake manifold. Your current manifold is so well known to make huge torque numbers but suffers in the high end horse power numbers. The Linginfelter manifold slightly shortens the intake runners and has a larger plenum to help with torque AND horse power, and any other power adders you do will only love you even more for having it.

Matt,a little tip for you since your Vette sat in water. An ex of mine had a car that started to have all kinds of issues with the electronics(power windows,power locks,etc.). Turns out her car had been in a flood and sat it water about 1-2in. below the window. The mechanic told her the reason for all the electrical issues was water in the wiring. The water was starting to dry out inside the wiring and corrode/short out. The only fix was to replace all the wiring harnesses and damaged electrical components. Which would have cost more than the car was worth. Just a heads up. Also another problem with it...it's a 90's Vette. And the last problem it's a Chevy(lol on the last 2 problems) 😁

Your valve problem isn't a problem....It's a ZR1, was designed that way. If I remember correctly, I believe there should be a 2nd key hole on the dash. The original ZR1 ran off 16 valves. You had a 2nd keyhole in the dash that you turned to open up all 32 valves. Modern LS motors use a computer controlled electronic fuel management system that does that for you. This was a big deal on that car. Find the second key...

Hey Matt, put a quart of Seafoam in it while it's cold, do a couple heat cycle (from cold to warm back to cold) and change the oil. Should clear up some of the gunk that definitely built up from it sitting so long.

My 98 Trans Am does that to. I was going to put an aluminum radiator in but the mount for the coolant level wasn’t compatible. My wires to the fans were also burnt, I hit a junk yard and all of them were burnt in the same place. I fixed the old wires and installed new fan motors.

I did something similar to my Jeep to keep it cool in the desert. Did the Worley 2 row radiator, and upgraded my water pump, thermostat, water neck, and I have a hydraulic fan.

my dad owned 2 of these when i was a kid, those valves only open as far as i remember when a key on the dash, below the radio, in front of the shifter is turned. its like having the red key for a hellcat basically. also, the side supports on the seat SHOULD open and close with how fast youre going or should have an adjustment switch to move the side bolsters. we used to have the second to last ZR-1 off the line in bowling green, really miss that old girl, there should be an exact copy of her in the corvette museum there if it wasnt destroyed by the sinkhole disaster....

Hey Matt fyi, there is a company in California called Justice Brothers that makes car care products that are amazing! Before you remove your manifold and heads I would recommend purchasing a product called tune up, it's an additive that you run through you engine for 3000 mile, plus get their fuel injection clear, both clean and free up sticky lifters. I would also investigate all their products because they have over 50 different ones that crush all the competitors out there! I have been working on cars for 25 years so I know first hand. Flush that coolant boy! Also I would pull all the plugs and compression test the cylinders. They should all be within 5 of each other. If one is lower pour a tiny bit of oil into the cylinder and check it then. If it goes up its the rings which will make sense since you're burning oil somewhat. May need a rebuild on the bottom end. Which is no big deal. Also change all the fluid. Trans fluid oil differential oil etc.

It has 16 fuel injectors too, and they're known to go bad.

Matt ripping up the pasture reminds me of my childhood. My mom has a 91 Pontiac Firebird Formula. She would tear that thing up everywhere! Now it’s a garage/show car.

I had those headers on a 93 ZR-1 and they are actually a little too big. They changed the way the car drove quite a bit. There is almost no flow in the low RPM range with them and it kills bottom end torque and makes the car sluggish off the line. But once you get up around 3000rpm, HANG ON! Starts pulling like a freight train up in the rpm band.

Matt get a can of SEAFOAM part number SF16. Clean the fuel system out. I've been using it for 30 years its really good. I've been in the automotive parts business for 41 years it works.

Matt, never saw you mention the high performance key. The other valves in the runners won't open unless the key is turned on. On the console left front top. Then when you put your foot in it all 32 valves open up to 375 horse.

Hi matt, 1990 zr1s had a "valet safety mode" that cut the power in half. It was a keyed switch on the center console. Check that, it may be the reason the car isn't getting full power.

Heres a thing. My bro has a 1990 zr1. Took it to a specialist to get it running right. Thr zr1 engine will always smoke. There arent any valve seals so it smokes from the exhaust.

Hey matt, check out your rear brake pads. The fluid level under the hood is low. That's usually a good indicator that you will need new pads soon.

I own a 1990 Zr1 corvette if you have any questions I might have some of the answers for it.

Bog and limp mode are from bad injectors. Let it warm up it’ll start to shake at idle too. You’ll want 16 injectors, DO NOT get the AC Delco OEM injectors they weren’t made for ethanol and you’ll have to replace them again after a while. I put accell injectors in mine and it runs like a dream. 👍

dump some Seafoam in the fuel and use the Seafoam spray in your intake. Will do wonders to your carbon buildup and valve knock. Also put some in your oil before an oil change.

Do a full tune-up. Oil change, spark plugs and plug wires..put a quart of lucus in the oil when you change the oil.. and mabey get a bottle of no smoke...wouldn't hurt....check the fuses for the windows...and relays.

just another point mat any time you completely drain the coolant out of an engine(replacing radiator) you need to purge(put a vacum on it) the coolant system. if not your gonna have hot spots and over heat and stuff

I had 2 C4's a C5 and a C6. They all have good and bad points - the newer they are the more they cost to fix. The 91 C4 that I modded/rebuilt drove REALLY well once I did everything I wanted to. The C5 I do miss as it really was beautiful. Sadly the C6 I don't miss because it was just an expensive headache - but that was my fault for not carfaxing it first.

If you don't have anything going on you could bring it to Houston for Cleetus and Cars on Feb 15th. Would be cool to see it and you guys in person, plus you might be able to do a video with Cleetus and get more viewers. Hope to see ya there!
