What an amazingly simple, efficient and long lasting design. Maytag was the best. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for posting this. I have always wanted to see inside a transmission to see how the actual agitation is accomplished.

Nice to have you back Eugene. Love your very informative restoration and product review videos on large appliances. I followed your advice and replaced a recently 1994 Amana (SQ) model which had a leaking transmission fluid (total mess) to the point that started getting way to noisy and replaced it with a slightly newer model Amana model from a repair center which specializes on refurbished large appliances. The model I have is different with a few less features and smaller tank but for me that is no big deal. It was in excellent condition and works great and only set me back $175 out the door. I now have a matched set again that works great and cleans great as well. I was considering going new for replacement looking at SQ, LG, and Electrolux but our local repair centers really feel most are not very good quality machines per reliability especially LG and Samsung which they state the parts take forever to obtain and are expensive. I stayed with old school and am glad I did!

Amazing how good it looks and the simplicity of it all those parts still looking great! Definitely agree with what you said that’s why they lasted so long. Not much to go wrong. Great job as usual would expect nothing less.

Nice video. You mentioned you were wondering how the shaft is retained. On these style transmissions, the retainer is actually on top. Its a half-round plastic cup that slips over the shaft located below the tub seal. You can get to it after removing the flange nut and tub, and then removing the top seal housing. I just replaced my seal and forgot to replace this retainer so I found my whole shaft would slide out with the agitator! Removed the tub, nut, and top seal and installed the this retainer. All good now!

white plastic retainer on top is the newer style maytag tranny. He was working on the newer style maytag tranny in this video but the new agitator shaft he bought and installed was for the older style transmission.

A helpful video as always. The original shaft you removed is for a "series 22" transmission which would call for a part WP22002340 (external plastic collar) to keep that shaft in place (in theory). The replacement shaft is for a "series 10" transmission requiring part WP215581 (internal metal clip) to keep the shaft in place. Our Maytag LAT9416AAE is a series 22 washer built in March of 1999 and has the plastic collar fitted to the shaft. Thanks for posting this video, it inspires confidence to maintain the most dependable top load washer ever made.

OMG thank you for this!! After waiting for the spring clip to arrive, I could NOT get the damned thing on! I was about to just take my Dremel out and MAKE a place for this stupid little piece I just paid more in shipping for than the part cost! Good to know I'm not crazy.

I just took apart my old Maytag last night and saved the parts, just acquired another 96 Amana, now I have two of those. The bottom was rusted out of the Maytag, other than that it was still working, saved the motor, the orbital transmission, valve, hoses, etc. I was really curious to see the inside of that transmission. I expected to see metal gears in these transmissions but it looks like newer and older washer transmissions used plastic gears. I have more appreciation for washers after seeing how they work, impressive and taken for granted.

I own a Maytag Performa PAV2300AWW top load washing machine. It must be close to 20 years old by now. I have kept it going with new parts over the years rather then buy a new machine that I hear nothing good about. Just a couple of days ago the drum in the machine stopped spinning and agitating but fills with water and the motor runs fine. So we drained the water out and tilted the machine back to see if the single belt was still connected. It was and I was able to turn the transmission pulley but it did agitate or did the inside drum move so I took the belt off. When I did the white nylon Transmission pulley that felt like it was moving up and down on the transmission shaft slid off the shaft down to the floor. I stopped doing anymore at that point in time. Just 5 years ago I replaced that Pulley with a thrust bearing kit I felt it needed. I lifted up the lid up top and tried to move the inner tub and agitator. I don’t want to try and force it but I can’t get either to turn freely with no belt connected and the power disconnected. So at this point I don’t know whether I need a new transmission or even if it could be rebuilt or if something else like the brake or something else is the problem why it doesn’t spin. Looking for some help on You Tube but I have been striking out. I feel like I am getting close to being stuck into buying a new machine and even if I have to I don’t even know what to buy that would be equal to my old Maytag we have owned for so long. Any ideas sent my way with suggestions would surely help me I feel. Thanks ahead of time.

my curiosity has the best of me, my 37 year old LA5000 stopped agitating,The transmission, so far it looks good as I disassemble it. The yoke I cannot remove it unless I remove the agitator shaft. The agitator shaft seems to be frozen in the basket bearing assembly. Has any reader or Eugene ever experienced this event?

I remember a common failure was the agitator shaft seizing in the bore. I never took one apart to see what was up. I wonder if that oring deteriorated and got stuck or something. Do you think the oring might have been how the original shaft was meant to be held in place? Maybe it snaps into an interval groove or something, and as the oring dried with age, it quit staying in place. Just thinking out loud here. Anyway, keep up the good work.

Maytag redesigned the shaft seal in the mid 90's (triple lip seal) which was inferior to the original design that had a high failure rate. The seal would fail and water would enter the transmission through the upper shaft/bearing area causing it to seize up.

@@muziklvr7776 makes sense. This really takes be back haha. I cut my teeth rebuilding old washing machines. I worked on a ton of whirlpool belt drives and ge machines with the crown boot. It was in a used appliance shop where we had to be frugal. We used to do a lot of component level repairs that you would never do in a customers home. From installing new bearings in ge centrifugal clutches to riveting new friction pads on whirlpool clutch plates, we did it all. It was a great place to learn!

@@denrayr Sounds like blast. You cut your teeth on some of the best appliances that will ever grace the planet. It's all cheap chineseium planned obsolescence junk now. And when a part fails, it's obsoleted by the manufacture. I'm running a1970's Maytag washer and dryer I pulled from a scrap pile in 2009.

@@muziklvr7776 I think we all have a special spot in our heart for the classic whirlpool direct drive. It's not a popular opinion amongst the old timers, but I think the LG direct drive front loaders are equally as good. I'd rather own one than the coveted classic speed queen top loader. I get that they are the only remaining classic top loader, but I didn't think they were that great during the golden age of top loaders, and I don't think they are that great now. They always had main bearing, pump, and brake problems. I don't know if they've addressed it, but they were also plagued with wash basket fractures. I just never had much of an appetite for those machines, and I guess I'm still not impressed 😂.

Eugene, Thank you for your helpful videos! I am in the process of replacing the tub seal gasket, bearings, and mounting stem on my Maytag LAT9416AEE. While I am at it and have the basket out I was going replace the shaft agitator and lip seal. I am having trouble finding the transmission fluid as I am finding the part discontinued. Is there another part # for the oil or an alternative that can be used? I do not know the weight of the original oil so any help would be appreciated. I have all the parts I think I need except for the oil, and RTV adhesive.

Found my washer wasn't agitating, tried everything. Final check was the transmission, removed ur completely and found the shaft is seized because even tried to turn it from the bottom and it wouldn't rotate at all and I can't even pull it out with my hand like Eugene did. My question is how to even get the shaft out if it's seized? Do I go to a machine shop and try to get them to pull it out? Will that damage the housing of the transmission? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had to use a putty knife and a hammer to "chisel" an edge of the putty knife in, then continue to move the putty knife in a little more with the hammer. I did this on 4 or so different spots. Then towards the top of the transmission, I inserted a corner of the putty knife back in one of the areas I just opened and I positioned the putty knife blade parallel with the transmission face plate and hammered the knife again (to move the knife down the side of the transmission plate face) until I could finally move pry the face plate off. Good luck. It was a bitch.
