Hackney half Marathon is definitely one of my favourite performances in the half marathon distance to date. I thought I would break down how the race went and share a few stats that I will be aiming to improve upon next time.
I also featured some of favourite running personalities in this video to answer the question “Why do runners need a training plan?

I love when you get into a bind like you did in this race because it reallllllly highlights your training. These types of races really showcase you mindset and whether or not you did your homework. We all know you did the homework, and despite the hot conditions you pulled it out. NICE WORK Aubrey! 🎖

Half marathons are weird man… the distance is deceiving. It’s manageable but also crazy hard and it slowly zaps you as you go… I hate that 16K mark.

As you progress heart rate will go down for the same speed. You'll get there.

Great content again A… although for your level of fitness your HR zones seem a bit high, not a negative just an observation. Which method have you used to determine your zones ? Cardio fitness takes time, it maybe just another muscle but it’s more complex than say ypur glutes or quads.

Absolutely, I agree with you. I have done it through the Garmin watch itself. Did a test with it and let it do its thing

Course was too twisty for my liking but I guess it has to fitted into Hackney somehow. Also, very hot! Not gonna lie, it was a tough 1/2 mara to do.

I am going to be a contrarian about training plans: they’re good for many runners, probably most runners, but not all runners. Speaking personally, training plans are dangerous for me, for mental reasons. When I have a plan, I follow it. I HAVE to follow it; it’s in the plan. That works great for me for some pursuits. But for running? Every time I’ve had a plan, I’ve come to days where I’ve KNOWN I should say “I’m not up for this run today.” Sometimes it’s too much fatigue, sometimes it’s a niggling pain, whatever. But because it’s in the plan, I go do the planned run or runs anyways. Because it’s in the plan, and I HAVE to keep up with the plan. Even though I know I should say nope, not today, my brain won’t let me not follow the plan. I can’t go halfway - it’s either all or nothing for me with plans. Running with plans in 2022, I took a massive step back as a runner, as I kept trying to run through things I shouldn’t have, because my brain gets filled with angry ants and bees when I don’t follow the plan. Running without plans in 2023 and 2024, I’ve made huge amounts of progress, pushing myself, but also taking days off or reducing intensity when needed. So again, this is personal, and it’s a brain thing, and running plans just aren’t good for me.

This is valid. There will be people (like me) who are the opposite. I am useless without a plan whether that’s running or the gym. But the points you raise here are valid especially if they are your felt experience. Thanks for this!

Aubrey, do you have another channel for video editing? I think you are far more gifted in video editing and can get more following for it.

Probably true, just don’t have much of a passion for it to really give it the attention and consistency it requires. Also… I think the following side of it is a bonus when you love what you do. You guys on this channel have supported me so well and I’m more than happy with what’s happening

IMHO (and by experience) you shall include longer slow runs in your plan...20-25Km...later long runs + fast finish....you will then overcome the 16k wall

Yes sir that’s the plan and doing that for sure. I’m on week 4 of my marathon training plan so not reached that yet.
